W2c an alright inexpensive biker jacket like the perfecto? I see fastfash shops have similar ones but were wondering if anyone has better suggestions as Schott jackets are out of my price range. Dont really care for quality as long as the fit/look is good

also biker jackets general

Why do you need a leather jacket this very second? You'd be better off if you waited longer so you could buy an actually good one instead of a fast fashion (or whatever) jacket that neither looks as good or is as sturdy.

But I've had luck on Grailed with buying cheaper double riders... I have an unbranded one that's a bit stiff but is alright for the price I paid for it (sub-$50).

I've had an OSX perfecto-like leather jacket for about five years now, I wear daily for half the year, still in good shape. I treat it every six months with leather grease, and it holds up pretty well. You can see that it's a bit battered, the lining is a bit torn up but I wouldn't part with it for anything, the older it gets the more attached I am to it. I payed around 200 euros for it. Pic related.

OSX isn't as big as H&M, less brand recognition, maybe that comes into play, I don't know.

Like I said, the lining is torn up, the leather shows wear but I try to take good care of it, I think it has another 5 years in front of itself before it becomes too worn out. My father has a real schott perfecto that he bought when he was around 20, back when they didn't cost 100 euros, I think he wore it extensively during his youth, and his jacket is in better shape than mine, so price comes into play on the really long term.

There are many perfecto-style jackets available in fake leather, which is usually a plastic concoction. Top man sells this kind of shit seasonally; you can get one for 185$ or so. It's not real leather, it'll tear and rip easily, and it'll disintegrate after a few years like plastic bags do. But you'll get 'the look' if no one looks closely enough at you. I'd say it's worth it for a single reason; if you want to try the look without spending a lot of money. If you are happy with it, then save up and buy a proper one.

>>14609211
Let us know how it turns out. For the life of me I can't figure out how they can produce a leather jacket for under 100$; just to get enough skins for the pattern it would cost at least 300$, and that doesn't include labour to put it together or anything else. Reviews online all confirm that they believe it's 'real leather'...so beyond this, I don't know how they make any money on it. Granted, their patterns are boxy and unflattering, so perhaps that's what happens (i.e. they produce a generic fit with no size customization). Anyway, let us know!

>>14609746
The sizing and fit is very important. It really does have to be a 'second skin', and if it's not, then it'll always look odd. If it fits perfectly, then the next step is to wear it without being self conscious. Maybe add a bit of a strut to your step, or maybe act like an asshole for a bit...whatever it takes. But if the jacket fits and your fashion is appropriately matching, then the rest is psychological.

I'm a huge fan of the French brand Iro. They source their leather from the same places as Saint Laurent, and it shows -- their lamb looks orgasmic IRL, it's all buttery and flowy, has an expensive, deep, subtle shine to it.

But they're not for poorfags, it's semi-premium price range.

A valid critique of the fit, but not the quality. Schott quality is still excellent, but they have changed their fit (like Wested, Aero, and the rest of them) because the absolute majority of the clientele is middle-aged, overweight, and American. That's the reality for any company. That being said, they have different cuts now (slim cut, or their vintage cut) which they use in specific models, so you can definitely get one that is 'normal' if you're fit.

>>14611487
Most leather these days (i.e. approx. 75% on the market) is tanned in Pakistan due to their lax laws regarding chemical pollution. Tanning leather is environmentally hazardous, and it costs money to clean the fluids before dumping them. Pakistan has no laws about this, so the tanning factories dump directly into the water source. It saves money, and everybody from Danier to Hugo Boss will use this if possible. The other approx. 25% comes from leather houses that farm their animals on the property (i.e. Wested used to do this, and Aero as well) or get it within their country (Schott does sometimes, and most Australian brands do as well).

>>14611597
Actually, they do. Just not if you're riding a bike for speed...then you usually need full armor, and specialist textiles.

>>14611653
The boxiness comes from a one-size-fits-all way of cutting leather. That's the reality for any budget leather jacket maker. Custom fit is the way to go if you are serious about it though, but it costs money. Either that, or buy the box and take it to a tailor so he can adjust the sleeve length and waist so that they fit you perfectly and not like your uncle's jacket.

Yes, they were Canada's only nationwide leather-specific store, and thus they had presence that required mentioning. There are lots of Canadanons on this knitting board who know about this. Incidentally, Danier declared bankruptcy or something like this a few years back; I think they got bought out and then they restarted again. Their quality is still entry-level stuff with horrible designs, but you'd be surprised how many of their jackets are worn by average middle-aged men.

America has a few companies worth noting; in addition to Schott, Vanson Leather is an awesome company, though they specialize in riding leather suits as well as custom one-offs. I have one of their competition weight jackets; still breaking it in, but it's fucking awesome.

The UK has some mentioned already, Aero being the most popular. Wested is great, but their customer service has been spotty over the years (Gemma does her best, but they're simply understaffed in that department) and the cuts of their jackets have been less than reliable.

Beyond these kinds of companies, you have independents who specialize in certain industries (like Jonathan A. Logan who does Hollywood productions and celebs) or you have high-end fashion houses (SLP) who just sell to the highest bidder. Then you have costuming or replica makers like Soul Revolver or Magnoli Clothiers, who tread the line between functional jackets and cosplay.

There's a lot out there if you know where to look, but the main issues of wearing leather will always be the same. Does it fit? No, really, does it fit? If so, you're good to go. If it doesn't....well....

>Yes, it's me.

>> No.14611745

>>14611706
is there any way to trace the leather of a fashion brand, if theyre not sharing that information willingly?

>> No.14611767

>>14611745
Legally in North America they have to declare where their leather comes from, however this usually is printed on the tag that declares the specific type of leather being used i.e. '100% Horse Front-Quarter Horse Hide, made in USA'. Sometimes they hide the information in a tag that is somewhere else on the jacket (i.e. not behind your neck but perhaps in the vertical seam on the left side near your kidney, you know, where the cleaning/care instructions are).

What you have to understand is that tanning leather in the US is prohibitively expensive. Bear in mind that this is different to actually cutting the skins off the animals; the beef industry keeps that going nicely. It's the tanning process that is problematic cost-wise. So, the equation you can use is something like this:

Leather from Pakistan for a jacket = 350$ +/-. Add 300$ if tanned in USA/Canada
Tailoring/sewing/materials = 100$ if skilled and experienced, more if not. Add 3-400 if made in USA or Canada
Name-brand markup = 300$ or more, depending on company.

My JAL uses the finest lambskin on the planet because he sources it directly, so a coat from him could cost around 950. But that's because the majority of his work is Hollywood contracts for costumes and he's not a company but a man who employs a few people. It's handmade, custom sizing as well.

A Schott will be about the same price, but it's mass manufactured (even though it's still handsewn in places, but labour is high cost) and they source their leather from suppliers in the US (so tanning is more expensive). The JAL is a superior jacket, by all counts, but it's cheaper because of the situation of how many people he employs, what his business focus is on (film, not people), and so on.

To get back to your question though: if a company does not tell you where the leather is coming from, if the leather is real leather then assume it's coming from Pakistan.
