Humans are notoriously poor at lying without proper training. If they are living a lie, that generally makes people uncomfortable (unless they're a complete sociopath), so they end up hinting at the truth or keep alluding to it.

It's done not necessarily with the hope that they will get caught, but they probably feel like less of a liar when they make a few tiny concessions here and there.
