I like the idea of southwestern and mexican themed clothing, and generally hate the Americanized interpretation of the theme. As far as I can tell, the differences are:
> softer, wider hats, and sombreros charros vs hard stetsons
> vibrant bolo ties with contrast vs smaller, subdued bolos
> leather and chino vs denim and gingham
> chanclas and heavy shoes vs $200+ name brand cowboy boots
> heavy use of colorful flair vs subdued clothing and almost uniform like conformation
> smaller belt buckles, normally with tiny ornate details vs bigger, pictoral buckles
> more mexican inspiration vs a hollywood product

apparently charreada (traditional mexican rodeo) has actual regulations for the charro outfits. They also hate being mistaken for mariachis, and can apply to get a pistol permit much easier than most other Mexican citizens.
