Update on the unknown watch I inherited from my grandfather.

I actually went to a god damn library to find out what ASU MARIN AUTOMATIC was for something.
ASU = AB Svenska Urdepoten
It was a Swedish watch importer/manufacturer who had their heydays between 1930 and 1950 and finally dissappeard in 1992.
They started by importing German/Swiss "insides" and put them in Swedish made "cases" but they also later made complete watches themselves under the name Exacta and Contacta. I don't know any of the correct terminology for the watch parts but I'm sure you understand me.
They produced roughly 15.000 watches per year and the watches were budget watches with "good quality".

The watch I have here would cost around $50 new in todays money, you can find similar watches on auctions for $10 to $100.
I still can't find the specific model that I have but after looking at pictures it seems my watch is from the 1940's and they were supposedly popular with the military for being not expensive but also quite rugged so that would fit with my grandfather getting it during WW2.

Some of you wanted me to open it up but I dare not because I don't know what I'm doing and I don't want to damage it.
I'm gonna find a strap for it, try to clean it up as best I can and then wear it.

I have never worn a wrist watch in my life before but I have found I greatly prefer the looks of the older and more minimal watches instead of honestly the majority of the watches in this thread. I might even have a new hobby now because watches are interesting as fuck.

Update on the unknown watch I inherited from my grandfather.

I actually went to a god damn library to find out what ASU MARIN AUTOMATIC was for something.
ASU = AB Svenska Urdepoten

Sure, they could have added plastic pieces a la Swatch/Longines, but my point is that there's nothing particularly special about the watch from a technical standpoint.

The movement is not unique to that watch.
The water resistance is not there (but, of course, it's a dress watch).
The case shape is not particularly complex.

If you like the look and the name, great. Those are subjective things and everyone's opinion is their own in that regard.

I was under the assumption that the ADs were places that were authorized to sell the brand but also had other brands. Like a tourneau store?

>> No.14376444

I don't think anon is giving the best explanation.

ADs are any retailer that is brand-authorized to sell their products. Most often, this is an independent (i.e., not brand-affiliated) store that sells different brands, and is authorized by each of them.

Sometimes the brands will also have owned stores. These are, in-essence ADs themselves, just corporate owned and only carry the singe brand - these are often referred to as a brand boutique

It really depends on the watch. Popular Rolexes used aren’t worth buying because they’ll only be a couple hundred bucks off, or even more expensive than list price if the model is really in demand.

For most watches though it’s worth to buy used, especially if they’re gold or platinum. The only concern is it can be a little sketchy to buy used depending on the brand. Just don’t do it unless you either know everything about the watch you want and can tell replicas from authentics, or buy from a reputable seller/dealer.

I'd like to add onto that by saying Rolex does not have corporate owned boutiques but Omega does, since that ties into the what the guy was asking. but my same comment earlier still applies, you cant get a discount at a brand owned AD, at least not to my knowledge. go to the independents for a bit of haggling unless the watch you want is in demand. I was brought in to look into the option of opening a North American branch but noped the fuck out after a few months of learning just how inept everybody involved with the whole business was.

The Daytona was only the tip of the iceberg of his collection, too. I don't know exactly what else he had but he said something along the lines of "oh, this piece of shit is just my beater," and in the time I spent around him I watched him spent more than enough on impulse buying luxury shit (almost 10k on a bunch of pairs of designer sunglasses, on one memorable occasion) that I don't doubt for a second that he had a few hundred K of watches locked away somewhere.

Were I in the market, though, I might actually consider the '57. One of the things I like the most about the classic Speedmaster is that it's quite a bit more understated than most chronos in its class, and the '57 takes that to the next level, almost into dress watch territory. It's also a much more wearable size for my pretty average wrists (a 40mm is perfect on me and the '57's 42 wouldn't be bad) and I like that it's auto.
