I wouldn’t call it a full hoax, I definitely think artificial scarcity is and will always be a tactic for luxury watches. I just think at this point it’s only a minority impact on the problem.

Think of the typical situation where a first time buyer comes in looking for a steel stunner and gets told the list is closed unless they buy other watches for $10k+ aggregate value. Most people aren’t in a position to spend $10k+ on a watch just to get the opportunity to buy another $10k watch. So either the dealer is completely retarded and irrational turning away all these buyers and sales, or the issue lies further up the value chain (the brands).

I spend a fair amount of time talking with my local dealer and have visited dealers globally looking for pieces. I’m also a relatively VIP buyer with my local dealer ($20-40k annual spend) and I’m still sitting on a long waiting list for a lot of popular models. If it truly was an AD issue I should in theory be able to get these models if not at my dealer, but another one that’s looking to pump sales, but it just doesn’t happen.

Long way of saying I think the brand production is the primary issue here.

>> No.14371336

>>14371323
It's simpler than you're making it my dude.

Rolex aren't going to dump money into new facilities and shit to ramp up production just to fulfil a temporarily high level of demand. Two years feels like forever if you want a watch but in terms of supply chain it's nothing.

>> No.14371349

>>14371336
Oh I totally agree with you, it’s not an easily solved problem. The reason it’s so bad (a lot of popular model waiting lists are 5-7+ years at this point) is simply because the brands aren’t willing to dump a bunch of investment into demand that will maybe sit stagnant in a recession. They’re happy selling a constant stream every year and building a long-term backlog that’ll make their revenue more visible and recurring.

I’m just saying people seem to fault the ADs far more than they deserve and my response was trying to justify that

Alright, look. The watchmaking industry is in a tight spot. In the states, there were three SAWTA/WOSTEP schools until last year. Due to low attendance, one of the schools closed. So now there's two left. The new class of students at the Seattle school came into our shop for a tour today - and there's only five students...

This is a program that is sponsored and funded by Rolex because they can't find enough people the the states to work on their watches. If more young people don't start training to become watchmakers, we're gonna lose the watchmaking industry in America. That means sending your mechanical watch to Switzerland every seven-ten years for service.

not to mention - the class was five white dudes, we need more diversity...

Now that Tudor is making good in-house movements with chronometer ratings and their bracelet technology is advancing like it is, there's really no reason to get a Rolex for the price, deal with waiting lists and all that bullshit, when all you're buying is the name like a nigger.

I'm not that watchmaker, but yeah customers suck sometimes. you can find shops where the watchmaker doesn't interact with customers.

the work is cool. if you're mechanically inclined, it's pretty relaxing. a good mix of routine labor vs problem solving. the main issues with the work is that you're tied to big cities (which I guess could be good for some people) and you're sitting all day.

I would have a hard time seeing this from a reputable dealer as Rolex is doing some policing (e.g., buying back grey market watches to trace serial numbers) and they'd cut off a dealer doing shady stuff, which then runs the risk of the dealer losing other reputable brands. I'll tell you what I did, and I'm a guy with 6.75in wrists. I saved up and bought a 4 digit Sub date. However, I think in today's diverse watch buyers market I'd be dishonest to you by not offering an alternative to what's often called a cliche. My second pick would be a Halios Seaforth Gen II Abyss Blue with Date. Probably the second best watch I've ever owned, and cool as all hell at a reasonable used $800 depending on condition. If you see one on sale with the Ginault Oyster bracelet I'd advise you snatch it up right away.

My wrists are still smaller (16.25cm). I haven't yet tried on a sub but there is a Rolex dealer a block away, I've just always discounted >rowlecks because family and friends have been sending them in constantly for adjustment. And I'm just a little hesitant because they're not prevalent in my field.

I like the one you posted, but am also cautious as I've never heard of the brand before. I'll look into it though, thanks!

If I were in your shoes, I'd try and look into a second hand sub. you can get some really nice examples with a full box and papers set for around 6-8K. You'll get a watch that will appreciate in value (not that watches are an investment, but if you get cold feet you'll make your money back) and arrive at your door much quicker than a brand new one from a dealer. They wear very thin and flat on the wrist so that's also a bonus for a near-wristlet like me. I've had no adjustment issues with mine and i've had it for 3 years, but like anything mechanical you must service them at a regular interval.

The Seaforth is by Halios, which is owned and operated by Jason Lim who lives in Toronto. They're a boutique watch microbrand (hate that word) that specializes in rugged pieces. They've become a little popular lately so there may be a waiting list, but good examples always pop up second hand online. I've owned two so far and I think the price to quality ratio is fair. The newer models use an ETA movement, and the cases and other parts are sourced form vendors, so be aware that it's not as handcrafted or higher end. I find that part of the appeal though, again price to quality. Good luck in your hunt!

gotcha. I've got wrists on the smaller side, but even on me a 38mm watch feels too small. The practicality of a larger dial is it's of course easier to see, so it's not just a matter of preference. I think 40mm is the absolute sweet spot for a watch.

I was initially going to disagree with you, but to be fair to a certain extent you have a point. I think the recent batch of Tudor releases (BB58, GMT, Pelagos LHD, etc) are their highest points for the brand since they used to use Rolex cases and parts. I do believe if the trend continues and they follow the trajectory they could be in a position to outclass Omega within our lifetimes.

But yeah, prior to that they were utter dogshit for many decades. Still, you get a relatively inexpensive watch with in house movement, stellar warranty and good pedigree and that's becoming increasingly rare nowadays. You're spending a fuckton on what's essentially a male bauble, might as well get the whole pomp and pageantry dog and pony show for your money, along with the widespread recognition that comes along with the brand. There's a reason marketing is so successful with these purchases, emotion is such a critical fuel to the mixture. If you want to really see childish old men go to RF, old saggy skin motherfuckers starting threads where they feel the need to remind Tudor owners that even though they're buying something machined by Rolex owned equipment, getting an in house movement that benefited from Rolex's research, and the same Q&A and product life cycle support as a Rolex, you are in no certain terms a ROLEX owner because you don't have one. Good day metrosexuals.

tl;dr I inherited a watch from my grandfather and I can't find out what it is.
My dad suspects it is a watch that was given to him in the military during WW2.

If it isn't clear the front says

ASU
MARIN
AUTOMATIC

SWISS MADE

and the back is just

"Stainless steel back, waterproof, shockabsorber, antimagnetic, automatic"

No years, no dates.
It doesn't have a battery instead you shake it to charge it, it keeps time perfectly despite laying in a box for about 40 years.
I was thinking about actually using it, it needs a new strap obviously and the glass is cracked in a couple of places.

But I'm mostly interested in if there are any autists here who would know what watch this is.

That is an incredibly good looker anon. The eBay marketplace is bristling with old watches like that, that are mostly frankenstines of spare parts, getting a fully original watch from that era is tough. So yes, keep it. Wear it. How many mm's wide are the lug bars?

Wear it for a day, see how well it keeps time. If it's gaining or losing thirty seconds that's pretty good.

The crystal isn't going to be replaceable simply because the parts aren't there. You could find an aftermarket one, but god only knows if it would ever fit.

The glass is gonna be acrylic, if it was merely scratched you could easily polish it yourself and get it looking like new, but a crack crystal, you're just gonna have to live with it

Regarding the brand, it's just one of those that have been lost to history, if a casual Google search doesn't find you anything, then that's all you'll ever know.

Lots of DJs and Cellinis, decent amount of Perpetuals
A few Day-Dates (usually more of them in wealthier cities / regions)
A smattering of random less-desired or less accessible sports models (usually a Daytona / YM and always in PM or TT)

So it means the market is willing to buy expensive watches but not pay for up keep. If it paid well I'm sure there would be a lot of interest in the programs. It literally demonstrates the typical buyer of a high end watch does not want a precision timepiece, they want something to sit on the wrist and look good only. Function is unimportant. Strictly appearance only. And from the other side it means the manufacturers are not looking for people to maintain their products, they must sell fine without the support. And they do not promote the CW21 certified so the typical buyer just goes to any guy who says he can work on watches or never maintains them unless they have a issue of appearance. Also the hurdle to get into the profession is high time-wise for training and getting needed experience. There are trades with a better turn around to get income.
