Imagine spending money on boots and not breaking them in yourself and appreciating the journey that forms the creases, the patina, the scratches and everything else that tells the story of the person wearing them.

>worn out
They aren't.
>distressed
maybe, depending on what you would call distressed.

They look "off" compared to "normal" shoes because guidi is weird and dyes the shoes after it's put together (I don't know the entire process, but afaik they basically put it in a washing machine with dye), which can produce interesting results with colors that aren't black. This also softens up the leather and produces the "worn" effect, though I disagree that they look worn, just different.
tl;dr - strange production method make shoe look funny, some people think it look good
The appeal is literally is that people think they look cool, so they buy the thing they think is cool. Or maybe "muh vintage gweed leathers", but those people are autistic.

What I didnt mention was that I bought them before hand but returned them because I saw loose grain and creasing in the toe box when they were supposedly new. Your first mistake was thinking you were gonna anything other than pure shit from OSB. How that company is still in business is beyond me.
Look for something oil tanned. They're dyed through. If you like that similar kinda service boot style check out Whites MP boot. Not through their own website but through Bakers you can choose black oiled smooth leather.
Red Wing does oil tanned leathers, so the Blacksmith or Iron Ranger might be an option. What's your budget?

Yeah, i tried the Elston last on, and it is way beyond more horrid IRL than any pic could do it justice. It also really does make your feet slide forward in the boots when you're standing still. Im thinking even just buying some black Tims to hold me over while I wait for a pair of Whites.

>what options there are for Europeans
I don't think there are any m8ty.
Europe's fucked in that regard.
Anything decent is really quite decent and thus costs the coin.
Cheap crap is just that, a junk imports from china or the usual shitholes.
England is an anomaly in this regard as they still have a sizeable homegrown shoe industry that the "common man" is able to afford if they just lay off the booze, fish and chips and the daily tabloid + crap magazine for the missus for a week or two.

America's in the same way as they too have a home industry that churns out decent footwear that isn't necessarily so beyond the reach of anyone willing to save a little and forgo a little. Import taxes fuck you in the US regard though I guess.

I had relatives in germany complaining that there was nothing decent, that wasn't ultimately a shitty chinese or whatever import, along the lines of even the entry level northhamptonshire stuff really available. I've heard the same from scandis. There's probably some options in italy in and perhaps spain or portugal but they'd be local things and you'll need local input. It's all still pretty costly from what I've seen, more than solos at any rate.

Mind you this is all coming from my scope that totally excludes anything from made in china+ from a brand that once produced in europe/US and then outsourced to cheapland.
It's my major pet peeve and I stick with it. I refuse to buy from any brand that once was made wherever and then jumped ship in the 90's to somewhere cheap at the inevitable expense of quality without lowering the price accordingly. It pisses me off.
I'd happily buy an actual chinese brand if something decent actually existed, but I won't touch these traitorous cunts.

You might not have this hangup, in which case surely there's something available to you that won't fall apart after first wear.

IIRC there might be some "cheap" stuff in romania or maybe poland but not in the styles you're probably into (trad).

they don't change, not that much
both viberg and white's aren't 100% perfect and you aren't guaranteed a totally perfect pair but on the whole they haven't to my knowledge lulled the same sort of crap that dayton has.
>wait 17+ months for a mediocre pair of badly made boots
every time I think I should give dayton a chance, I remember this incident some asshole went through, and then I look up more recent cops of dayton and there's still bullshit going on.
i would avoid
you stand the high chance of waiting months for something only to have to send it back because they fucked up (this might have to be repeated several times). you can try your own luck and patience though go ahead
i have always liked the look of their grey nubuck service boots though

that being said, I prefer the look of the viberg, which ironically is apparently a dayton last or something viberg got in a trade of lasts, more than the whites but depending on your circumstances you might be able to get whites that fit your feet better.
I think whites not done in their usual styling with a more structured, bulbous toe cap to look a little strange

I checked out goodyearwelt for reviews and only found one that had serious problems that Dayton worked with to correct. Didn't find much of anything on styleforum but I don't really know how to navigate their site

The Daytons are actually the ones I was leaning to most of those three. Found a pic from someone's review and the last shape is really nice.

Apparently Nick's is known for extremely good construction and attention to detail, as they're White's number one competitor. People in that part of the country seem to swear by one or the other.
They allow you to fully customize this one as well and choose from a bunch of leathers.

I want to wear boots all year round that have a decent heel, not only bc of heightfrauding, but also because it helps my posture a lot. But I have a few questions:

Can I wear say Red Wings during summer? Is it too hot or is it alright to wear them outside? Or should I get some decent chukkas or derby shoes with heel?

How many pair of boots would one need to own to wear regularly? Is just two pair of boots all year round enough, wearing each pair on another day? (I have significant OCD so I want to help myself by having a minimalist wardrobe.)

>> No.14364265

>>14363836
Wesco is probably the best out of the three. White's and Nick's pretty much comes down to personal preference of which you like more. White's is a lot better at responding to emails and calls regarding orders and they typically make their custom boots much faster than Nick's does. Nick's was notoriously slow a few years ago when they were making changes to their shop and changing locations. Boots were taking 6mos+ to get made. Nick's has a bit better attention to detail than White's which probably has some to do with why they take longer.
As for Wesco, they're probably America's best kept secret and top boot maker. They make some insane boots and they'll basically make them however you want them. Their customization options are insane. That's the thing with them though, all those options cost money and you can very easily end up with an 800-900 dollar boot. Is a boot of that quality worth that much money? That really depends on the buyer. But there's no denying Wesco is at the top of the boot making world despite not many people knowing about them.

As for me, I went with White's. I was satisfied with what I got, felt the price was fair and they've been good to me. I've ordered from them multiple times and would happily do it again. Just to mix things up and see how they compare I'll probably get a pair of Nick's in the future. Their new fashion oriented boots look great and I'd love a pair.

Agreed on the cap toe, but disagree on the perceived formality of the plain toe.
Plain toe anything to me evoke more casual wear, of course depends on the instance (the never-worn and ultra formal patent leather, and patently ridiculous, opera pump being prime example).
A black, captoed oxford is "standard business dress" shoe, at least in my mind. Same would go for dressier boots (eg. a captoe balmoral, or captoe derby boot). Cap toes "hide" the crease on the vamp better and look "neater", and thus a disregard for the veneer of neatness places the plaintoe out of standard business dress and into more fashionable waters. Business wear isn't meant to be fashionable; it's a uniform worn when we have to pretend to be civil with people we detest to be able to put bread on the table or simply to stave off suicide (for reasons unknown).

Those smooth, one piece oxfords (or captoe-less balmoral boots) seem a little too sleekly fashion forward for stodgy office wear to me, which is what 95% of office wear is supposed to be, stodgy and uniform without much personality.

Depends what office though.

>Can I wear say Red Wings during summer? Is it too hot
We don't have your feet, so we can't say whether or not you'll find it hot.
People wear boots, red wings included, in all temperatures.
As long as things aren't extreme like the middle of the sahara or a steamy rainforest or something you should be fine unless you're sensitive to heat in the feet.
Laborers that wear the workgrade red wang don't exactly change into airy perforated canvas plimsole slipons for summer now do they.

>How many pair of boots would one need to own to wear regularly?
2 minimum unless you know that you sweat a lot. Some people exude gallons or rank, acidic monkey sweat that kills footwear.
3 if you're accounting for rainy days or winter, because sometimes boots can take longer than a day to dry.

>> No.14364878

>>14364224
>Can I wear say Red Wings during summer? Is it too hot or is it alright to wear them outside? Or should I get some decent chukkas or derby shoes with heel?
I wear boots year round. I will wear boots over any other type of footwear with very few exceptions such as gym or formal times. It's also extremely hot in the summer where I live.
It all depends on you and what is too hot for you. If I wear boots I'm also obviously wearing pants of some material, so keep in mind it's gonna be hot. But who cares? Shorts look like shit on 90% of people. Wear you boots and you'll be fine. Which leads me to section two...

>How many pair of boots would one need to own to wear regularly? Is just two pair of boots all year round enough, wearing each pair on another day? (I have significant OCD so I want to help myself by having a minimalist wardrobe.)
Two minimum is a good idea. Your feet sweat, more in the summer, so they need a day in between wears to allow the moisture to dry, otherwise it can damage the leather and shorten its lifespan. Get two pairs, alternate them and keep cedar shoe trees in them when not in use. The shoe trees absorb moisture, help the boot keep its shape and prevents creasing, and the cedar makes them smell nice. If you can't afford two pairs of boots right away which is completely understandable at the very least use shoe trees. Wear your boots daily if you want and you'll be fine. The alternating thing is really a precaution, just make sure you use the trees.

I wore my Iron Rangers most of spring and summer last year and they're fine and I was fine. Wear what you like, fuck other people's opinions and take care of your shoes and they'll take care of you.

They're going to be really beat and most likely reek.
You're wearing the same pair of footwear in very hot and humid conditions, doing a lot of trudging around daily, for 6 months?

Take you main pair of stomping boots, whatever you decide on, but also take some light canvas shoes or whatever as well to alternate (converse/vans whatever that shit is called). The really flimsy kind that you can bend whichever way and strap to the outside of your pack. Wear them on plane/train/bus rides coz they're easier to slip off than boots. Also for nights on the town if you're going to be doing that shit during your 6months.
Don't take just that one pair of boots though, that's fucking rank. It's half a year m8ty. Your feet will thank you.
(bring flipflops too for showers so you don't get nipped or contract warts or feet aids and for watering hole fun).
The turdsdays will probably fall apart in short order considering people wearing them alternating with other stuff in a normal city situation report issues. Avoid.

After the exchange rate and shipping, yeah no point with the Thursdays.
I found these in a store nearby for $100 aud (about $70 us). Theyre pretty generic and i cant find any info about them really. Just dark combat boots. The beckman is marketed as the "dressy" redwing boot for "the factory officemen types" or some such. The quality of is the same, but they used to trump up the leather as being better (it was just another type, less rough like the amber harness or copper rufftuff on thr IRs). Wasn't the beckman more expensive?

They haven't been as well liked around here because the toe is relatively bulbous, and that there's no toe cap sort of exaggerates this even though it's about the same.
I remember how people would buy them and crush the toes a little to lower them a bit by jumping on them. They look fine after some wear desu, I wouldn't go crushing the toes.
Now there's the merchant so people have migrated to that.

Here's my beef against the W1k's vis-a-vis RW heritage line (rwh):

W skimp on the construction of the 1k. RW doesn't (well, only to an acceptable degree).

1) this is more theoretical really, but it bothers me anyway:
The insole that wolve use for the 1k is some synthetic shit.
Not talking about the "sock", the thing that you see when you look into the boot that your feet actually touch, I'm talking about a fundamental part of the interior construction to which all other parts are depend. If insole dies, shoe dies; it's irreplaceable.

RWH use a real leather insole. All decent shoemakers on earth, whether they be massproduced factories or bespoke workshops, use leather insoles.
It's a long tried and tested deal.

This synthetic stuff, if it's crap, may not last as long as a leather insole. Not saying that it's a given that it'll crumble, shit can happen to a leather insole too, but when you have all shoemakers of any worth all pointedly avoiding the synthetics in interior shoe construction for the time tested method of using a proper leather insole, you have to wonder about W's rationale.
It'll be cost cutting, usually is the reason, which doesn't sit right with me.

2) (not theoretical, but actually tangible):
RW own their own tannery (rare). This means that all leather QC is in their hands. No excuses.
W has to buy their leather and, for the most part, it's shit.
The leather they buy isn't shit per se, but here's the thing:
quality, discerning shoemakers will be very selective on the clicking table where the parts of the hide deemed acceptable are cut and the trash discarded (scarred, stretch marks, too thin, veiny etc).

Cheapskates won't be as discerning with the clicking, and will use shitty parts of the hide better makers will discard to save costs. W, among many others, definitely skimps with their use of CXL, which is already pretty fucky in regards to consistency.

For these reasons(+) 1ks will always be 2nd tier compared to RWH in my eyes.

That being said, it occurs to me that I've been keeping track of this guy on youtube for the past 6 or so years who annually updates on the condition of his two pairs of 1ks and they've seemed to have held up, more or less.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KK6DB-79-o
Didn't now he'd finally updated for this year.

Another thing that occurs to me:
From memory, at least the last time I bothered to look, the 1k was wolverine's only USA made piece of footwear as all other lines had long since been outsourced to shittier, cheaper pastures.
Now, I dunno if I'm remembering it correctly or not, but wolverine might actually outsource the construction of the 1k's to an actual US based factory (since they don't have any left). I don't remember for sure, but this too would annoy me if it is in fact that case.

It's the "idea" of the matter, and I'm all about ideas, especially bad ones considering how things are for me lmaowao

>> No.14371386

>>14371358
One final thing that's so obvious it's slipped my mind:
Leather soles.
Fuck leather soles.
Specifically, fuck cheapo non-oakbarktanned leather soles.

General rule of thumb for youse cunts:
If a shoe has the option of a leather sole or a synthetic sole and the leather sole option isn't an oak bark tanned sole (they will usually state this explicitly unless it's a shoe from company so far up the ladder that it's implicit with the calibre of the maker), don't bother with it and choose the synthetic and save yourself the hassle of getting shit topied. Good cobblers are hard to find these days that won't scratch your shit or screw up a simple topy job.
It's dire out there folks.
99% of posters here would be better served owning boots with a synthetic soles like what's on RW and others.
It's more practical.
Will last longer and hold up against shit you have to step on and the elements.

That being said, I don't mind the overall profile of the 1k's with their thin leather sole, but I would defo get those topied after purchase, probably toe taps too.

Leather sole slip and die, rubber sole you won't cry.

There was a video of their construction I saw a few years ago on yt that showed the synthetic insole, some tour of the factory they were made in iirc.
I'm trying to remember if I could see it in that cross section of a 1k a local boot store had in, and I think it was there too. Can't remember for sure, so I'm basing this off that vid.
If things have changed in the past few years then that's that and that's better.
I doubt it though desu.

I have the higgins mill (similar to the 1k) and I can say everything i have seen from Wolverine over the last few years has been shit. The fit of the 1k used to be exactly the same as the higgins, now they are trying to cut corners by making the lasts slightly narrower, using worse thread, and the CXL lottery with them is more like a 1 sided slaughter where you get dicked so hard you feel like a white girl on prom night. I fucking loath Wolverine, and the leather sole shit is the stupidest fucking thing on an "all around heritage boot". Like, bro, im going to be outside, this shit will literally get torn to shit on rocks and slips on everything. The 1k sucks so fucking much its obscene that shit is still 400 bucks

So i got one pair of dark blue denim 511’s for my dark brown iron rangers. Is dark blue denim the only acceptable way to style brown boots? What about a lighter blue? Is black and brown really a huge no-no, even a washed out black?

Nah, you can wear chinos of pretty much any color you want. I actually love wearing olive chinos with my brown boots and have been complimented on it before. Khaki colored is fine and even stone if you coordinate correctly.
But yes, black and brown is autism and I cringe every time I see some clueless person wearing it.

Off to get some chinos then, thanks. What about tshirts? Or am i pretty much stuck to wearing button ups?

It all depends on your body type. More built people look fine in a t shirt and boots, in fact most will.
If you're soft looking, skinny or chubby it won't look very good. I remember seeing this kid on campus at my universitywho was a slightly chubby manlet with glasses wearing Iron Rangers and he wouldn't look good no matter what he wore.

Just wear tacticool boots in the summer. Something like Nike SFBs or danner tachyons.

I've not handled a pair myself, but from what I've read up on CCP footwear he's more of a designer/experimenter than quality shoemaker. The leather quality is no doubt phenomenal, but the curved zippers and exposed shanks are inherently less hard-wearing than more traditional construction methods.
That said if you know a great cobbler or are willing to look for one if something goes wrong then absofuckinglutely cop them.
