A two-handed watch cased in white gold with a power-reserve indicator as its only complication. Simple... but not really.

It features a silver-toned hand-guillochéd dial with 12 radiating sectors, altering the coloration of the dial as it reflects light from different angles. Those hands? They're hand-polished, and flame-blued, as you would expect from De Bethune, a manufacture that only makes several dozen watches year.

In focus is the triple-parachute shock-absorbing system, unique to De Bethune's calibres. The bridge of the triple parachute is secured by a spring-based system, protecting the heart of the movement. The various architectural elements are connected by three jewels, thereby absorbing shocks and ensuring precise re-positioning of the bridge after displacement.

Movement shot. This is the 53-jewel, automatic DB 2024 calibre, which oscillates at a frequency of 28'800 A/h, with 150 hours of power-reserve. It features a titanium platinum oscillating weight and self-regulating twin barrel. With De Bethune’s exclusive friction-reduction technology, by means of six jewelled blades placed on either side of the spring, ensures the optimal transmission of maximum energy to the balance wheel.

Yeah that’s the upside they are shilling on their platforms. “If you don’t like the watch you received there’s a vibrant community to trade pieces with”.
Bitch I don’t want to exchange this pos submariner replica with this pos speedmaster replica and do it again every month.
It feels like big players such as Seiko or Swatch Group could pull that kind of stunt tho. Receive a mystery Hammie/Tissot/5 every month that’s guaranteed to worth more than your subscription. There are hideous timepieces in those brands too but I guess they would also be easier to trade.

The funny thing about mechanical watches, is despite quartz watches being more accurate in principle, a good mechanical watch is likely to be the more accurate watch on your wrist. Just because you will likely make a habit of checking the watch more often, pulling the crown out every three days to lose the 5-6 seconds you gained.

Quartz, you will just set and forget, not correcting the time over years until you are minutes out.

I can agree with the HE valve looking out of place, but it gives it a quirk i suppose which is nice, and to be honest i forget about it.

THE thing that stood out for me was the dial. The way that dial plays with the light at different angles is incredible to see in person, and having previously overlooked the SMP 300 due to it looking a little dated in my opinion, it was surprising to find myself at the AD trying it on and liking it so much i bought it on the spot.

The little changes on this model bring it up to date really nicely, and having seen Rolex previously as the only brand to go to, i look at my Sub now and realise how boring it looks compared to the Omega.

The only gripe i have with it is the bracelet, a taper to 16mm like the Oyster bracelet would make it so much more wearable.

>paying thousands for a watch 40% MADE IN CHINA
Most "Swiss" watches below about $3,250 are more than 40% made in China, due to a little loophole in the regulations.

You see, ETA or Sellita can create 40% of the value of their movements in China and still sell them as "Made in Switzerland", but when those ETA or Sellita movements are purchased nominally Swiss uncanny valley shitter purveyors, the cost of the movement is treated as 100% Swiss, meaning the entire cost of the movement is counted as helping the shitter purveyor hit the required 60% Swiss value creation, and since the cost of the movement is a large part of the manufacturing cost of the shitter, that means watches with far under 50% value actually created in Switzerland are sold labelled as "Made in Switzerland"

The love of horology is not restricted to some arbitrary price point set by you, o grand arbiter of "good watches". seiko and rolex are popular brands because they make excellent watches (even if rolex prices are somewhat inflated), and the fact that watches are passed down generationally is an amazing thing. >Yup. It's the only bad thing about the master series but it REALLY sucks ass. You'd think JLC would be good enough at making movements to make general usability things like this more of a priority.
There are good reasons why JLC wouldn't place a high priority on getting a lengthy power reserve on their entry level Master series watches. The main one being that those movements are all fairly thin, and longer power reserves require heftier mainsprings which are bulkier, and tend to have more torque across their operating range, and thus require the gear train to be sturdier. Solving those issues would cost money or bulk or both.

Tissot makes Powermatic 80 powered watches which are exactly as thick as some of the master controls, and which have a much greater power reserve, at less than $1000. It beggars belief that JLC, the watchmaker's watchmaker, is incapable of making a movement with a better reserve which still fits into an MC case at a reasonable cost (to them). They just don't prioritize power reserve. It's not some grievous sin, but it is minorly inconvenient because I have to remember to wind the thing over the weekend, when I generally wear a sports watch instead of it.

>Tissot makes Powermatic 80 powered watches which are exactly as thick as some of the master controls
The Powermatic-80 is 4.6mm thick while the JLC 899/1 is 3.3mm thick. They aren't even remotely comparable in thickness.

>and which have a much greater power reserve
Because the beat rate is lowered to 21,600, which massively reduces the power consumption compared to a 28,800 beat rate.

>at less than $1000
Because the escapement is plastic and the balance wheel is laser cut instead of being adjusted and regulated by the skilled labour of a watchmaker.

>It beggars belief that JLC, the watchmaker's watchmaker, is incapable of making a movement with a better reserve which still fits into an MC case at a reasonable cost (to them)
Not really. Making a thin, 28,800 bph movement with more than 40 hours of power reserve results in a very expensive movement.
