My thoughts are I am often just happy to get a new watch and it does not matter if it costs hundreds of dollars or just a few dollars. 14cm is 5.5". That's pretty normal for a petite woman's wrist. Lug-to-lug is the key measurement for anon. If I remember correctly, the lug-to-lug for a the ladies Speedmasters is only like 45mm, pretty close to the 36mm Exp1.

Yeah I have looked into it and I think it's well within my capability financially and tons of chinese manufacturers make parts for machines and whatever you want if you send them dimensions, and if you can send them a mold or blank it's like nothing for them. I think i can get them too tool up for a limited production run for not a lot of money then get a few hundred made. I am sure I could make my money back. Really I just want one for myself but it costs the nearly same to get 1 or 100 made since they have to set up for it. When it comes to computers and what i do for a living it usually turns out if I make stuff for myself the way I would want it I find other people (not a lot but some) turn out wanting the same thing

If you are willing to buy used you can get a totally decent collection for less than 5k.

A basic collection should have a daily wearer, a dress watch, and a sports watch.

A Tudor Black Bay 36 is a fine daily wearer, nice and discreet. Those are about 2200 used.

A Cartier Tank is a pretty classic dress watch and can be had around 1000 dollars used (though the really nice ones are considerably more expensive) It will be quartz, but you can always upgrade later.

An Speedmaster Pro is an utter classic and there's millions out there, so you can get a great one for about 1500 used.

A more recent project: customer's 80's digital Casio W-14 had a burnt out bulb. Since the light button also controls other functions the watch was not really usable. I could have just removed the bulb and bridged the connection with a wire, but decided to do it properly. Rummaged through the drawer at home for some old chink digitals, and gutted one for the grain of rice bulb and soldered that in. Now the watch works completely.

Unfortunately they aren't really that affordable to buy on the used market anymore. The only two things to really look out for on used ones is whether the chrono second hand resent spring is worn out, and whether a previous watchmaker improperly ran the delerin parts through the ultrasonic cleaner and in doing so damaged them.

I think you're getting confused between "good" and "as good as".

There are plenty of watches out there that are good, even cheapies. The problem comes when you claim that your cheapie is something that's "as good as" something that's more expensive/famous, etc.

Take the Seiko SKX divers. They're really inexpensive, they have automatic movements, good water resistance, reliable and cheap to fix. That's a good buy if you're just starting out or even if you've got some far more expensive pieces and you're looking for a beater and/or want to get into modding.

But then you have something like the Omega Seamaster. It's whatever, but anyone who buys one compares it to the Rolex Sub, gets asspained over it and start getting really pissy and nitpicking over specs is showing that they really wanted something else.

>> No.14240943

>>14240934
>That's a good buy if you're just starting out
This just means "that's a good toy for a kid", I mean, it's obviously not good, it's not a real watch, it's what you buy for your sister's middle schooler who has autism so you want to "get him into the hobby" or some shit. And you're expected to get rid of it as soon as you can, and "upgrade" to a real watch. It's absolutely disheartening and dehumanizing and humiliating to have to be on that level just because of not having enough money.

Better to not wear any watch at all.

Patek makes some brilliant complications and even their sports watches have really great design. Then they also crank out some basic gold dress watches for people who will pay for the label. He's trying to dickride the 5170, basically.
