Shining a light on this independent watchmaker from the Netherlands, Michiel Holthinrichs. He's utilises 3D printing in his watchmaker, and this is not some gimmick, he does actually use some sort of metal printing.

Pic is the "Raw Ornament" he showcased in Baselworld, a raw take on the his first watch, the Ornament 1.

He uses ETA 7001 movements but he doesn't just case them up as a traditional "micro-brand" would do but he applies finishing on them which sets him apart from the rest for me, personally.

The cases start out like this, I think it's some sort of SLS printing, he doesn't disclose what type of printer he uses.

He's definitely doing something new but is it enough to stand out? Here's the Ornament 1, his flagship piece. What do you guys think?

I truly think what he does makes him stand out from the rest of the "micro-brands"/independents, is he at the level of Dufour or Voutilainen? Definitely not, but is he doing something that sets him apart? Yes.

While this new piece from him comes in at about 4,5k. I think showing, instead of hiding the print texture is a good move. It highlights the nature of the case and why it’s different, makes it more interesting.

I believe it's sintered steel. Not an expert but these complex shapes is hard/wouldn't be possible on a CNC machine alone.

im not an expert either, im just skeptical. a lot of people basedface as they empty their wallets upon hearing buzzwords and trendy concepts like '3d printing' and 'microlot' without trying to think deeply about what it actually means. a couple seconds on youtube and google and i found videos of cnc and other metal fabrication techniques that produce parts that are smaller and in greater detail than what you're posting. example: https://youtu.be/oycD4utesjA

also, i can go on any number of 3d printing websites that are like the equivalent of teespring and give them my cad file for a watch case like this brand and have it done for $40. im still not understanding what is special about this brand

>> No.14239367

>>14239331
I can't answer for him but I see it as trying something new and combining it with something traditional. I know about print sites, they wouldn't finish the watch cases for you, especially at 40$. I'm starting to sound like I'm shilling this brand but trust me, I'm not. I just want to start a discussion on it, as it is an interesting way of manufacturing a case and something I haven't seen any other watch company do.
