I wouldn't buy a cheap one, get one that has a USAAF or RAF contract number on it.
If you can find a used one in your size on ebay from a reputable MFG you might be able get it half off.

Otherwise new a decent shearling flight Jacket is about a grand.
Jacket types are listed from heaviest to lightest: B3, RAF "Irvin", B6, D1, ANJ4, etc.
Some recommended MFG: Aero Leather(Scotland), Eastman Leather(Britain), Alexander Leather(Simmons Bilt, UK), Cockpit USA(though not totally authentic)

The Jacket I have is a Cockpit RAF jacket, I paid $700~, usually cost around 1300

The jackets are sized to you, not bespoke, but arm, waist, chest, and back measurements are considered. These types of jackets were made in mind that Army Uniforms and even A2 flight jackets might be worn underneath. So they're a bit(not a huge amount) baggy.
I look a bit like the Michelin Man, but that's because shearling is thick depending on the type of jacket.
Pic is a D1 jacket.

Fit is everything; if the fit is near-skin tight, then go for it. If not, find another. The only problems you see with older jackets is with lack of care, mold, or things inside the lining that you don't know about.

>>14218277
Save up, and if you don't own a leather jacket yet, choose a design that is timeless so you don't waste money on something that will be dated. Double-rider, aviator, B-3, and cafe racer styles are generally fine in this regard in trad colours (black, brown). If you go further afield, then the timelessness can disappear.

My brother has one from AllSaints, and after examining it closely, I know clearly about the quality. Also, they did a sale at the end of season which was 50-60% off....if they can mark down their leather jackets that far, you know that something is slightly odd.

>>14223475
Most if not all leather is tanned in Pakistan because their environmental 'laws' are far more lax than anywhere else. This allows them to use chemicals you can no longer use in the Western world, and when you're finished with those chemicals, to dump them unceremoniously into the nearest fresh water source (which you also can't do in a civilized country). Thus, most if not all tanned leather comes from Pakistan.

As a result, budget companies tend to source their leather in Pakistan AND have them constructed there. My Soul Revolver was made there, as was most of my other jackets by other manufacturers. It's not an automatic strike for a jacket to be made in Pakistan...the issue is who sourced the leather, who constructed the jacket, and how it fits you.

Pic related: one of my jackets made in Pakistan.

Of course I live (in infamy).

Agreed. I still want to get a horse-hide jacket, but I don't have room in the stable at the moment. It's fucking expensive, but it lasts forever. Your piece looks awesome though: as long as the shoulders sit at the right place, then it'll always be 'timeless'.

I think you misunderstand me. Vegetable tanning requires a shittonne of water, and as fresh water is expensive, industries tend to go for the faster method of Chrome tanning. Unfortunately, chrome tanning requires lots of acids, sulphates, and other shit, which are all not good for the environment.

Companies in the west have to clean their shit water before dumping it, at least to a certain degree. In Pakistan this isn't the case, so it's the cheapest way to get leather tanned chemically.

The issue is not with the quality of the leather, it's with the chemicals used and how the chemicals are handled after usage. 90% of the world's supply of leather is Chrome tanned, including my jackets, for good reason; they're less susceptible to water stains, and they're softer. Vegetable tanning is only useful for belts and other sturdy leathers.

Chrome tanning has other benefits: larger colour palette, the colours will stay true for longer (so, less potential of patina), softer and suppler, and it's resistant to water, stains, and heat.

Do your research Anon.

On your point about cheap leather jackets, you're quite right; usually the 300$ range is far too cheap considering the cost. When I was sourcing the leather for my white long coat, the leather alone from a reputable supplier was around 4-500 USD; granted, it's kneelength, so you'd need larger pristine panels, but the point is there. If the leather alone costs around 400, say just for a normal waistlength jacket, then you factor in the costs of labour to sew the jacket and you've got 550-600 for a normal leather jacket. Then you add on price for name-brand, and you have modern prices around 7-800. It's not rocket science, but people have no idea the cost of these things when you break it down.

Cheap leather jackets have to skimp somewhere: usually they do this by advertising the jacket as 'pre-distressed', which is just a way to hide panels of leather that are not pristine and have flaws.

Flight jackets are bigger, they're not skin tight biker jackets.
If you actually have an Eastman or an Aero jacket, then it's accurate to WW2 sizings and fits as intended as long as the shoulders and chest feel correct.
Your pants are baggy as hell, get slimmer ones as pockets are flaring out the sides making it look wonky as fuck.

it just doesnt suit you the way a leather jacket should. it points out your flaws. the shoulders dont fit. and, absolutely worst of all, the puffy pockets. just look how they inflate your midsection. never wear a bottom-heavy jacket when youre chubby.

dont give up though, a stocky build isnt a bad basis for a leather jacket

Tanned in Pakistan, = tanned in the air of Pakistan, the chemicals, the soil. This leather is simply flawed. Climate of Pakistan is not conducive to leather tanning processes. Only European tanneries are acceptable.

The general rule is to match the leather colour if you're wearing leather shoes. Black jacket with black boots, brown with brown, etc. It doesn't really become try-hard because in general only women notice footwear. There's nothing wrong wearing a brown leather jacket with black boots, but it does affect the total perception of it...something seems off. With the grey long coat I wear black boots, and with the white long coat I wear black formal boots, as is per usual with my suits. Other colours would require other things though.

Not repulsive by any stretch- and taking a second look at it, it might just be the rest of the outfit shaping my opinion. I mentioned the cut in my post, but they appear almost identical in that respect, it's just the leaner styling of #2 that gives the impression of a more fitted jacket.
I'm really not a fan of the standing collar though, and the zipper seems extra-superfluous, but this is also coming from someone wearing a rejected Final Fantasy design, so take that with a brick of salt.

Ultimately go with the one you think you'll enjoy wearing more. Just be sure you can still see yourself wearing it 5-10 years from now.

Is this you as well? >>14242202

If it is I don't think you understand how leather tailoring works and you might be on the verge of an expensive mistake.
While it would be possible in theory to take the waist in, it would have to be done using an existing seam (unless you want the marks to show) and would probably require altering the elastic ribbing as well since it's cut for the jacket's current circumference. Moreover, unless there's a back seam I'm not aware of, those two seams running beneath the pockets would be a cluster fuck to get at.
Your tailor would have to remove the pockets in their entirety, dart the waist, and then sew the pockets back on making sure to either match or cover the holes left over from the original stitch.
Finally if it's just the waist you're adjusting, since the jacket is so bloused, you may end up with a really unflattering inverted triangle shape- relaxed around the chest and then comically tapered towards the hem. If I were you I would leave it as is and bulk up to fill it out or find a different jacket.
If however pic related is you, then stop sperging about a blouson not fitting you like a cafe racer (and fix your pants and boots holy fuck). The fit as is is perfect, any adjustments will just ruin a good jacket.

Agree in general with everything this guy said. However, some companies will make exacting repros on demand. Aero even did a run with old stock zippers and mismatched shitty hides as would have been issued.

Mister Freedom offers really short jackets even though he completely imagines his own designs based on old styles.

Shorter jackets actually sit better because they don't go down to the hips where they would need to flare out. Anything less than the bottom of your belt line looks out of modern proportions.

Ty
The varvatos jacket was like $250. I got it back when I was an employee as part of a seasonal wardrobe package. The Julius was around $650 iirc from y!JP

Yeah and yeah. Thanks to my type-A neurosis I might even be able to wrap this semester up a week or two early. Then I'll pop home to see the senpai for a bit, move to DC for a summer internship (which my program allows instead of a thesis) and that's that.

Those jeans are way too bright, try a darker blue, and they are cuffed too high, otherwise decent fit.
