To that guy in the other thread who wanted to know about the Seiko Sea Urchin.
It’s an okay entry level/beater watch but it doesn’t do any you want from an auto (hacking, handwinding). The bracelet is sort of jangly and I don’t care for it, and even the MIJ models have issues with chapter rings being off slightly so save your money and get the Malaysian one if you must.
But realistically save your money and get a better watch with a better movement and better specs. You’ll outgrow it fast and you’ll want more watch. It definitely is a gateway to /wt/.

Another unrelated note is that random non-watch people have asked if it’s a Rolex (I do own one), then give a disappointed “oh” when told it’s a Seiko which is neither here nor there but I thought I’d mention that.

Pic related my beater with a shit leather strap that’s mostly used for yard work/the gym (on a Reddit-tier NATO usually).

They're considerably less expensive than their equivalent Rolex. Your basic Datejust runs around 6k now. The Grand Seiko equivalent, like an SBGR253 is about 4k.
>inb4 weeb shit
They look boring on paper, but you actually need to handle one to get a feel for what they're doing. They are, near as possible, perfectly made. Also, they're not made in the same facility as your SARBs. They are essentially a company within the company that does their own thing, uses their own movements, etc.

They're no joke.
Yeah, "just a Seiko" but that's also part of the point. If you want to to impress others, buy a Rolex. If you want to be impressed, buy a Grand Seiko.

That is no longer true. Grand Seiko are trying to now market themselves as an high end brand on-par with Rolex and are increasing their prices accordingly.

When GS were competing on price with brands like Tudor, Omega and Zenith they always came out well. Now they are going to b e competing with brands like Rolex, Jaeger LeCoultre and even entry level Audemars Piguet. That is a tough sell for anyone looking to purchase at that price point.

I disagree. "Normies" don't care about watches at all. They stopped wearing them years ago when they realized their phones had a perfectly accurate clock in them.
The only brands they know are Rolex and Timex.
Any conversation with them always goes like:

>Hey, that's a cool watch
Thanks it's a 1982 [watch babble for longer than is socially appropriate]
>Yeah, that's a neat color on the face. How much something like that run you?
[give price. any price above 200 dollars.]
>Woah! I'm mean, it's something you love so that's cool for you. I'd never pay that much, my wife would skin me alive, haha.

So the only people that care at all are watch nerds. And if you can find a watch nerd who doesn't know Grand Seiko in 2019, you've probably talking to someone who's 75 years old.

The GS SBGA229, Spring Drive Diver is 6,000 MSRP.
The GS SBGH255, Hi-Beat Automatic Diver, is 9,600 MSRP

They never had a nobility. The upper classes in older, more civilized countries have been taught that they are obligated to rule. If they rule poorly, they are right to be overthrown by the masses.

Wealthy Americans, most of whose families have been wealthy since 1992 when Shaniqua's kid grew 2 feet over the summer and developed a great mid-range jump shot, then got drafted into the NBA, just see money as something to be spent as loudly as possible.

You think you're getting a good deal, when it's just a kit-bashed Frankenstein of some real parts and some Chinese parts, all hiding behind the fact that Rolex has made millions of these things and weren't always as rigorous about parts sourcing as they are now.

Spend a little extra and get something that has the boxes, the papers, and, importantly, the service records.

Basically true. Same as with Japanese car brands, which sold everything from cheap little economy cars up to luxury cars and sports cars under the same brand name.

Seiko is more like a watch conglomerate operating several production chains under a single name, like if Swatch were to operate Swatch, Tissot, Longines, Omega, Certina, Mido etc all under one name and and rely on product lines and price points to distinguish them to consumers rather than brands.

Hell, most people don't even realize that the quartz and spring drive models aren't made by the same company as the mechanical models, and that the quartz and spring drive models largely have separate design and production chains than the mechanical models as a result.

Seiko has always struggled to clearly define its product tiers effectively in the minds of consumers and this really continues today where they sell waaaaay too many product tiers under the Presage and Prospex lines.

The old Seamaster GMT "Great White" is a good example.

Something a little quirkier and way more pilot-like is the Glycine Airman Purist. That's a 24-hour watch with two independently adjustable hands and a rotating, lockable 24-hour bezel. Once you spend enough time flying, you start thinking in terms of 24-hour days instead of day and night.

Not necessarily. Those offer a GMT complication but, unless modified, they allow the user to change the GMT hand without moving the hour hand, not the proper way.

The GMT hand is the one you're supposed to set once, to your home time or UTC+0 or whatever, then the hour hand skips around depending on where you are on the planet.

Then again I think the Explorer is the greatest 3 hander of all time but I am aware of plenty of people who also think it is one of the ugliest watches ever.

Lexus is Toyota's premium/prestige arm, irrespective of getting a car with less features/options, what you're paying for is the prestige of the name on the badge. That is what Grand Seiko is trying to do. Buy the seller. What the other anons said is true, it's a minefield. Spend a little more for a good one at a good dealer. The premium for box and papers don't mean much to me, unless there are service papers. A box and papers are easily found to match a watch, so they don't say much, service papers are a different story. If the watch was brought in and had fake/wrong parts it would have been rejected by Rolex.

Recently I purchased a vintage Rolex and these are good tips. Especially about buying the seller, and also remember that if it's too good to be true, it usually is.
Also as you've mentioned original papers/boxes are a nice bonus but easily available to "legitimise" a fake listing (where all you have is pictures). I saw a GMT Batman on the Bay and the card/papers had a Subbie reference on it. I bought mine from a bricks and mortar jewellers who also had pics with the back off and of the movement etc. If the seller is a watch/jewellery shop and won't do that for you then pass.

Also just an aside to the other anon, when it comes to my watch purchasing always hold out and don't ever settle for something that isn't exactly what you want. I personally would just be reminded of how much I'd want the 14270 everytime I'd look down at it. One will pop up at the right price eventually.

Big watches are always dumb, especially if you have bigchwrists like myself. I picked this watch and I’m glad I did since it would have been impossible to find a Flieger of this characteristics otherwise.
Aristo is an old but not particularly fancy German brand from Pforzhein, like Laco and Stowa. They are known for producing in-house cases and bracelets for other German brands, being titanium their speciality. They also have a ton of Flieger models, all of them using non modified ETA movements. I like how mine resembles the originals A cae design quite well in a small size, even the “onion” crown, which is only few Flieger producers get right.
Pic related is an original WW2 Flieger, 50mm size, IIRC.
