Black polishing requires always requires a jig, that's how it's taught. Wood or a metal jig with three feet are used to keep the piece being polished level.

Before any one says but the hard steel parts.
Reminder, Lange's bridges are made of German Silver. Patek and Lange does their anglage by hand you weebs. Watch houses don't have to copy Dufour because they have their individual identities. Patek is Swiss. Lange is German. They have their own way of styling things which is why you won't see a three-quarter plate or snailing on a Patek. They have their own way of doing things.

For flat pieces, yes.

>Patek and Lange does their anglage by hand you weebs.
Your pics prove what the guy said: "Typically the only parts of flat angled anglage that will be cut and polished entirely manually by Patek and Lange are areas where jigs and powered tools cannot reach, such as complex curves, inside curves, and corners like on tourbillon cages."

>Watch houses don't have to copy Dufour because they have their individual identities.
Well of course.
But there's no denying that full, rounded, fully free hand finished bevels à la Dufour are more visually pleasing, and much more labour-intensive.

>Patek and Lange does their anglage by hand you weebs.
The video I linked literally directly shows you a Patek employee using a small powered hand polisher to polish anglage on Patek movements.

Maybe you'll believe the director of product development of Lange instead? Talking about the use of hand applied polishing machines in the ALS finishing department?

https://youtu.be/DGAsib-4mCk?t=442

As he explains, Lange applies and polishes the anglage entirely manually on movement parts with complex curves and inner corners like their tourbillon cages because you cannot effectively use a milling tool to cut the anglage or a small powered polisher to polish it in those areas.

I'm not interested in the silly slapfight you are having with that other guy, I was only posting to correct some of your misconceptions of how the term 'by hand' is used in haute watchmaking, and to explain to you why the style of anglage done by Dufour and by Credor's micro-artist studio is much more labour intensive than the style done by Patek or Lange, precisely because it must by done entirely manually entirely without the use of powered polishing tools.

There's a mechanism within the movement that decouples the mainspring, necessary as otherwise automatic movements wouldn't be possible, you couldn't move the movement as the rotor would constantly over wind the watch. Manual movements can be over wound but the crown feels tight once fully wound and you've really got to put an effort in to over wind the mainspring.

Because the 8L is only used in models that aren't Grand Seikos for historical reasons (e.g. high end Prospex divers) but are otherwise made and finished to GS standards. Seiko recently developed the 6L35 to be an upper mid-range mechanical movement that isn't just a less decorated GS movement, though Seiko hasn't put the 6L in very many models yet.

Here's the Rolex and Tudor prototypes that were sold and being debated as fakes made by Vietnamese fakers. Here's a thread on it;

Not only are those not fakes, they actually have a patent on them. One of the reasons why it was suspicious was Antiquorum made a mistake with listing the year as 1980s, a time where Tudor has stopped using the rose logo.

>> No.14198084

To those expecting Tudor to release a Submariner, were you guys expecting it to be cheaper than a Rolex Sub or would you have been okay with it being at the same price or even more expensive than a current Sub? Because I don't think Rolex would allow Tudor to kill their cow with a cheaper but the same alternative to it. I would assume that if Tudor does release a Submariner it would even be more expensive than a Rolex because at that point, Rolex wouldn't lose money.

Tudor produced a cheaper but the same Submariner for almost 50 years. Do you think something at Rolex has fundamentally changed such that they would be worried about a Tudor sub all the sudden?

I think the thing preventing Tudor from releasing a Submariner again is that it would make the Black Bay seem like a misstep. They went all in on the Black Bay as their unique stylistic take on the Submariner and they aren't going to release a normal looking Submariner alongside it.

The original Tudor subs are every bit as beautiful as the Rolex, by the way.

Got a batch of Lorus shitters recently, and this piece immediately struck me. It's clearly a homage to the old 6138's.

Only problem is that it uses the usual plebcore quartz movement with chrono-second on a subdial, but it can in theory be swapped with another Seiko movement from the same family that has the classic chronograph seconds.

I was curious about the P01 bezel machanism and found this

>The new Tudor Black Bay P01 is born from a '60s prototype that was designed with a very unusual locking bezel mechanism at its core. In the 1960s, the tolerances on watches weren't what they are today. Back then, the mechanism that allows bezels to ratchet generally wasn’t as sturdy and well-engineered. A bezel getting knocked out of place could actually cause a problem as far as timing is concerned, and when it comes to Naval equipment, it could potentially mean arealproblem.

So it was a solution to a problem that no longer exists today. And it was a 12 hour bezel too, not as important as a diver's bezel where a 5 minute difference could mean death.

Things that are old, or look identical to old things, are not inherently good or valuable. In many cases, age does indeed add inherent value.
Especially when there's a massive watershed moment that happened along the way.

In many ways, any mechanical watch made before the quartz revolution is inherently more valuable and noteworthy than a mechanical watch made after it, simply because mechanical watches were the best people had at the time.

Nothing cool, but here is a blurry wrist shot from a month ago. It goes really well with a suit! And also with anything else, it's very versatile.
>>14198903
It is a great watch. The quality of the hands/indices is so perfectly mirrorlike that it reacts really beautifully to light. Spring drive's obvious super smoothness is a cool plus, and the movement is generally nice looking (but nothing spectacular, the spring drive internals are relatively quite ugly and are thus hidden behind a 3-quarter plate). Casework is lovely though, and it sits well on the wrist even though it's a fucking CHUNK of metal. Overall, it's got a very "premium" feel to it.
Importantly, that is the watch itself. The bracelet....leaves something to be desired. It's extremely scratch prone, and it feels chintzy and weak (even though it isn't really) because of the lightness of the titanium.

>> No.14198996

Oh, absolutely. I'd say it's a 8.5/10 and I recommend it wholeheartedly. The lightness does absolutely nothing for me, if this was a steel watch it'd be a 9.5 out of 10 for the added resilience of the bracelet.

Honestly this problem doesn't really detract from the watch while you're wearing it. The watch itself doesn't scratch at all (maybe it has stronger titanium??), and when you're wearing it the beauty of the case/face is so engrossing it's worth every penny I spent on it. Also, not that anyone wearing a mechanical watch actually cares, keeps exceptional time. +/- 0s in 4 months.

If you took a bottom-tier movement like a 7s from a Seiko 5 and gave it the full Voutilainen treatment, that would be amazing.
It’s what the trinity used to do: take a bog standard Venus chrono movement that was outdated even at the time, and give it a complete overhaul, and then sell it for the price of a nice car.
