Buying my first house, closing next Friday

Plan on making a lot of changes as time goes on. Any thoughts on cork flooring instead of carpet? Seems soft and easier to clean and obviously way better looking...guess as long as it's warm that's what matters

Cork is a durable finish as long as you maintain it properly. I've been into appartments which still had the same cork floor from the 60's and it looked fine, maybe a little faded. If it gets real fucked up you can refinish it by sanding it down. Since cork is softer than wood you might want to be careful with heavy furniture or things with sharp legs as it can leave indents. If you do go cork find a company that has experience with it and can maybe let you talk to other people who have had it installed if you are worried about how well it wears long term.

Former floor salesman here.

Save yourself the headache and go for high end vinyl plank. I don't mean that shitty "rustic" $1.99/sf Home Depot stuff go high end like Congoleum or Kraus and go to a decor store not a big box. It will look 95% like real hardwood and be 1000% easier to maintain.

>waterproof
>moisture proof
>no acclimatization (sudden heat or cool won't destroy it)
>can install yourself
>can clean with a wet rag
>no need to refinish
>no squeaks/creaks.
>no need to replace subfloor

Yes these autists who live with their mom will whine about it being inauthentic but as a home owner you have enough on your plate, you don't want to deal with specialists charging out the ass to treat minor scrapes or water damage in 5 years time. Vinyl is just so much easier to work with and more practical.

Also, paint should be the final thing you buy, theres 100's of options of floor, 1000's of options for decor and furniture, but 1,000,000s of options for paint. Do the math.

Sorry for late reply.

It depends HOW it is crooked and to what extent. If it is just slanted or sloped to one side, you will have no challenges. If it is concave, convex or lumpy, you may want to consider replacing the subfloor but it would depend how severe the problem is.

Best thing to do is take a broom stick or hockey stick and place it on wherever on the floor you are most concerned about. If there is a gap greater than 1/4 inch between the broom and the floor at any point, you will have problems. Don't worry about dips that you don't notice with your eye. If it's just feeling lumpy, it's sometimes enough to build it up with skim coat/feather patch in soft spots.

Also remember there is flex front-to-back but not side-to-side so adjusting the grain gives you more leeway.

I find it so hilarious when /fa/ makes these threads. The great majority of you adhere to socialist (communism) ideologies, not fully realizing in that kind of societies, homes like these will no longer exist. You won't have an actual home or house, but rather brutalist shithole apartments like most euros have now.
