I don't think that's the cause. The high brow middle class began to disappear as soon as the commoners could become rich and influential. In America, with a lack of nobility, this was amplified and has been going on for hundreds of years.

Avant garde existed thanks to patronage, the lower brow prefer kitsch. But when the opportunity developed for low brow to become rich they became trend setters. Because of lack of understanding or purposeful desire to distance themselves from the high brow nobility they continue to prefer kitsch.
