No, even if the Chinese were to build better mechanical watches than the Swiss, the Swiss industry would survive no problem.
The quartz crisis hit hard because at that point of time watches were used as tools and a cheaper/better alternative came along for that purpose.
Nowadays mechanical watch brands, especially the high end ones, are from a mainstream consumer point of view built on marketing and image. They became a status symbol and fashion piece. Just look at the countless images of people wearing high end watches and not even bothering to set the time and date. No one buying a watch for that purpose would want a Chinese one.
I'm not saying watch enthusiasts necessarily think that way but I can assure you that the majority of people who buy swiss watches do.
Same thing with the clothing industry. Brands like LV and Gucci used to succeed because of their high quality products. Nowadays they survive of being status symbols and social media exposure, increasing prices and lowering quality in the meantime. People that buy into those brands don't care that there are better alternatives for a lower price. They buy it because of the name.

Apart from its own daily alarm, chronograph, second time zone, perpetual calendar etc you can link it to your phone and it checks to stay on time, you can set weekly alarms, make the phone sound to find it or when it loses connection, world time, stats about battery charging etc. Also you can configurate notifications (the watch beeps and/or vibrates and the seconds hand points why on the chapter ring; see how it says "call", "info" etc). You can choose the apps you want to be linked and notified, and in the case of calls or sms filter by contacts. You can make for example emails to beep and calls to vibrate or whatever.

Also its fully solar, steel made and 100m wr. A tad big at 44mm, but not too heavy. The bracelet is comfy but ill try a NATO (20mm) too.

I dont want to wear a watch that has a screen, is not at least 100m wr and has to be charged every few days.

The screen or the full "smartwatchiness" makes it less stealth and more distracting. Also i find that psicologically people find it most disrespectful if you are looking at a smartwatch while in a meeting or social whatever; almost luke if you were paying attention to your phone.

They occupy a particular niche. Top quality highly finished ETA movements in cases that are simple and elegant. They are designed for the customer that wants a luxury Swiss watch and to look stylish without needing to flex. You get excellent value for money as they occupy the real sweet spot of watches.

>Waltham Watch and the race to the moon
This is a nice story (pic related), but I can't find any citation for it. The Wikipedia citations don't seem to have the information they pretend to have and Waltham moved to Switzerland in 1957 (despite supposedly helping Raytheon and MIT in 1962).
>[6] "Raytheon's homepage".

>[7] "Apollo navigation system". Archived from the original on May 10, 2012.

http://klabs.org/richcontent/Misc_Content/AGC_And_History/AGC_History.htm

What I was able to find, however, was reference of using a section of the abandoned Waltham Watch Co. building for the project.
>It was decided to take over a big section of the old Waltham Watch Company building, which was in pretty rough shape when we took occupancy. The lavatories were the crummiest I had ever seen, with signs on the doors reading: "Your Management Takes Pride in the Facilities It Provides Its Employees." In time, RCA did a nice job rehabilitating the building.
>Eventually we got some other contracts, and we began outgrowing the Waltham Watch building, which wasn't an ideal place anyway.

Anyone have any more information or insight on this?

I have a Swiss watch I no longer like, but selling it would mean taking a loss of around $900. I don't need the money like being in trouble or something, but I want the money to invest in a different watch that I actually like and want to wear.

Should I take the money and run, or hold on to the shitter and just buy the other watch the regular way? I'm not loaded or anything, but not broke either.

Depends on how much you don't like it. You're losing more than $900 if it just sits around in a box without you enjoying it.

Just my two cents here, but this is why I personally think exprnsive watches are often not that bad of an investment. Most of the 5-10k watches don't lose a lot of value, especially if you got them used yourself. I've seen people sell their Portugieser for more than they bought it for after years of use

They lose around 25% when bought new. Some brands lose less (Rolex), some more.

what's the stance on this band on my SNZG11J1? just picked it up for $50 brand new
i dont know if it clashes with the mostly brushed casing seeing as only the sides of the watch are polished

the leather band is the other option, otherwise i might just put a nato on it
