Blued hands really enhances a watch's appeal. What do you guys think of this new Santos? I'm a bit iffy with the new bezel flowing into the end link area. There's only so much you can do with the Santos design though.

Not him but here's my assumption. It appears that the rotor rotates the same way but instead of it winding at the centre, it winds on the blue area. The rotor may also possibly be on a track for stability.

No idea what Greyskull LP is.
I tweaked a generic push-pull to where it made a little more sense, but this was in 2011.
I did use SS for learning form.

My advice: take it real slow. It took me a looooong time before I could squat with decent form.
Also: don't overdo it. I used to lift heavy and at high volume three times a week, and felt like shit on rest days because I felt like I was missing out.
But as it turns out that shit is a meme. I once didn't bench for over a month and then the very first session beat my previous plateau by two reps.
Now I do a heavy lift maybe once or twice a week just to stay in shape.
Here's a quick pic on the way to the shower.

Here’s a replica of a 120k$ Roger Dubuis that the Chinese reverse engineered. There’s some flaw on the circular frame being smaller on the replica but this is what the Chinese can achieve and you’re telling me they won’t do a Grand Seiko because they can’t copy it? Just lol.

Because those chink fakes are either not real tourbillions or just something that looks like one. A real HH tourbillion can be over 100 parts by itself all hand finished whilst still retaining accuracy. I think the cheapest real tourbillion watch is around $20k iirc.

But yeah they are still overpriced and exist to extract more money from the ultra rich.

>> No.14108931

>>14108907
That's an 800$ replica. It's easy to churn them out when you're using slaves in hazardous factories to build stolen designs.

The Europeans on the other hand have to shoulder the research & development costs of tourbillons, pay their workers properly and ensure their manufactures are safe. Another reason is, if you're buying a tourbillon, it's definitely going to be an in-house design, so imagine all these brands trying to design and patent, compete with other brands all for some undiscernible, marginal gain in accuracy and spending millions in development and production just to compete with a competitors 5k tourbillon.

If you entirely ignore the fact that Grand Seiko's finishing is taken to the extreme.
Unless the Chinese themselves start tin plate polishing their cases by hand with the same expertise as GS, the fact that they're replicas will be EXTREMELY obvious if not from the polishing flaws, then from the almost just as obvious case line flaws.

>Here’s a replica of a 120k$ Roger Dubuis that the Chinese reverse engineered.
Skeletonization is something that's very easy to make look good from a foot away. The Chinese are shitting out $5 skeletonized watches.
With relatively large and straight surfaces like GS cases and indices, flaws and inferior polishing will be immediately apparent.

Well then they've managed to finish something very well which still looks tacky and cheap as shit. Not only that but they change the design every second year which as I said will date the one you buy very quickly. They need to make the hands and hour markers look much better and settle on an iconic design they stick to. Until then it's a waste of money when you can buy a datejust.

Well, I whether you think it's tacky or not is not my concern. Just saying, if nothing else the level of finish on those and the modern diver 300 is on par or even better than Rolex. Rolex need to step up their game because Omega is actively aiming to take the first position, hence their devotion in improving their products. I too prefer Rolex btw, because I'm traditional. But spending a very good amount of time with a loupe on rolexes and omegas I have come to the bitter conclusion that Rolex need to step up their game lest they eat the dust of Omega driving away.

To be clear, the cheapest Chinese tourbillon is around 1,000; Seagull uses that movement, but there are other Chinese makes that backpack it for varying costs.

You have to take into account the purpose of buying a mechanical watch. It's not for accuracy, it's for complexity of build and status. The tourbillon was invented with the intention to fix a problem of static positioning for pocket watches, and there is enough literature to suggest that it really doesn't work. To make matters worse, a wristwatch is almost always moving position, which makes a tourbillon utterly useless for its purpose.

So, having one in a watch is an unnecessary complication, usually requiring extra power (either two barrels or a superbarrel required) into the drivetrain and providing nothing in terms of increased accuracy. But, it is nice to look at (who doesn't like moving parts). Hence, the Swiss industry will produce them as a luxury on a luxury. They would NEVER put it into a watch in a 5-10k price range...it would break the illusion of its value (minus the finishing, of course).

Chinese tourbillons work in the same manner but are not finished to the same degree at all, and furthermore, their existence at such a low pricepoint proves the illusion of their worth.

This is what I'd do, as long as it doesn't need servicing. Just polish it up a bit, put it in the box, and take it out once in a while and wear it for fun.

>Sell it, and take it as a warning for future purchases. Don't look back, and be careful of the 'seller's remorse' i.e. you might miss it a few years down the road and try to find it again, only to have lost it forever.

This might be a silly perspective, but I'll say it anyway. Why would it be necessary to harden the case of a watch in the manner that Sinn and Damasko do, at least, in terms of saying that Rolex's Steel (or anyone else's like Omega, Breitling, etc.) is not sufficiently strong? What precisely are you expecting a mechanical 'tool watch' to go through that wouldn't damage your wrist/hand beyond recognition?

I can understand wanting a watch to survive a fall to a tiled floor...this has damaged many a watch. But beyond this.....? Why does it matter?

If it's just about the bragging rights of having the strongest case, then Rolex probably wouldn't bother, same with Omega. Their interest appears to be along other vectors of research. In the same way that it could be argued that Damasko has no interest in classical aesthetics; one could ask, 'why can't they produce a beautiful watch?', and the answer would obviously be, 'it doesn't matter to them, it's not their selling point.' Just a thought.

>>14109639
Do you think it's ugly? If so, and if you'd never want to ever look at it again, then get rid of it. It's not going to appreciate in value (unless it's some outrageously rare piece that some odd collector will want to buy). Just make sure it's not something that has even a hint of sentimental value.

When I moved last time, I threw away my first tobacco pipe. It was a piece of shit, bought out of the barrel, and it was in horrible condition. No matter how I treated it, no matter what I threw at it, it still smoked on. I thought to myself, 'why would I want this piece of junk in the future?'. I miss it to this very day....because it was my first pipe. So, if you have no sentimental memories about this watch, make it gone. If you have a hint of it, keep it.

cont.

The economics is the problem. The normal customer who would be looking for the 1000-2000 price range is diminishing in numbers, which is one of the reasons why Omega has been pushing their ranges to higher price ends. It isn't just to compete with Rolex (either in truth or in perception), it's because the lower end market doesn't have enough customers to make it worth while. Last time I was here, someone was discussing how Seiko was getting rid of their low-end mechanicals for the same reason. Yes, there will always be a few Anons who want one, but the vast majority of the normal population either don't wear a watch, or do so for ironic counter-culture reasons. For those who like horology at that price, they buy vintage but good brands. The 90's are over, and with it the need for Tag. In some ways, I'm still amazed they still exist today (although the same could be said for Fortis, Blancpain, and all the rest).

>> No.14109669

Because it's a tool watch and what makes watches worth it is to see what the watchmaker can do, whether it's a new movement, some neat finishing, a unique design, or case hardening. Yeah, you can say no one should give a shit because you won't need it, but you could say the same about water resist or magnetism resistance, which Rolex does care about. Or even finished movements, which no one "needs". I don't get why people ask less of people who charge a lot for their goods. But maybe Rolex just isn't for me.

Well, I don't mean it in terms of 'Rolex is King'. All I'm saying is that the question to me doesn't make much sense because it's like asking an apple why it's not a vegetable. Rolex appears to care about a few things specifically: heritage/luxury, reliability, brand recognition, exclusivity, and within all this a slow but regular increase in manufacturing standards across the board. Their case shape hasn't changed in decades (aside from the Maxi-case), their triplock crown hasn't changed much since inception....it seems that if it works, don't change it...just refine it.

The 'tool watch' issue is in my view one that is more concerned with the actual definition and how luxury watches fit into that category than anything else. A proper tool watch would be a digital one that could withstand the usual issues you see in the military. No mechanical is required for this purpose. Tool watches as mechanical devices, especially if not waterproof, are exercises in manufacturing excellence, as you've quite rightly described. But this is precisely why I don't agree with the necessity for Rolex or anyone else to necessarily follow this line. Let other houses focus on that. Let Lange focus on beauty of finishing in their movements, and Zenith in creating new oscillators, and Omega in attempting to up the universal standards of watch movement testing, etc.

>>14109676

How come you're up so early?

Yes. It's early, isn't it? Dear me, and I thought this was a forum about people who enjoyed spending time talking about the time they take to understand time....

I would say I'm up late. Also, Omega has garbage bracelets.

>Omega has garbage bracelets...

Not sure what you're comparing it to in that price range. The Seamaster segmented one is universally enjoyed due to its non-hair-pulling design (but universally hated by polishers for their construction). The old Speedmaster bracelet (1969-74 or so) is perhaps the best period bracelet of its kind of any manufacturer in terms of comfort and durability....so....I shall happily disagree with you on that!

Wear one...you'll be surprised.

I'm judging based on the gaps between the lugs or case. Also, the rumor is that the bracelets are made in China.

Specs for the Chronograph Seamasters are different to the non-chrono versions, due to the extreme height of the case. You'll find this problem on the older Chronograph versions as well (though the one in the first pic is the first co-axial series that is problematic).

The second pic is more in line with what I've seen before, but it will happen if the springbars are bent (which is a common occurrence). It wasn't an issue with mine, and after getting mine serviced recently, it's definitely not a problem.

As for the bracelets made in China, I believe you are correct. Of course, it depends on the period, but Omega like many other manufacturers have been outsourcing to China for things. Mine's not, but it wouldn't bother me if it was really, as long as the tolerances were tight.

The 1125 bracelet on mine is pretty comfy, and doesn't pull hairs. Can't tell you how the new ones are though.

It's not just the seamasters, the AT has issues as well.

You can see the spring bars and the end link doesn't merge with the case.

In the case of a new watch it is most likely a manufacturing flaw.

Does anyone know where I can get a decent quality NATO strap in Australia? What's the difference between a high quality and low quality NATO strap anyway?

Should I buy a long runtime automatic? It annoys the fuck out of me when my seiko dies during the weekend. What do you think about the Tissot Powermatic 80 movement? It should survive 2 days if it really lasts 80hrs.

Is it really that hard to just take your Seiko out and wind it a bit during the weekend? I do that with my Vostok and it's like a minute at most.
