he is questioning the logic behind criticizing tom ford for being a libtard, since fashion design falls under the umbrella of 'liberal arts' in higher ed. it doesnt make sense to me either, since liberal arts ≠ liberal politics, just explaining what his post meant since you didnt follow.

Due to the lack of genuine opinions in this thread I like his clothing a lot. It's all stuff you could wear for at least a decade after you purchase it and still not look dated. I purchased a pair of white cotton linen pants once on sale and could not be happer. I think I may get either a pair of jeans next light blue or black.

Before he came along the industry (high fashion) wasn't doing very well. By the time he left Gucci they had come from being nearly bankrupt to being valued at 4 billion. Other designers at the time hated him and weren't shy at all about trash talking him to the media but once he flipped the industry and brought in fresh blood and money, and started stealing their old customers they finally caught on to the idea that it was time to change, and that Tom was right.

there can be no doubt that tom ford objectively turned around gucci and ysl's sales, but i agree the poster overinterprets tom ford's influence. the industry was doing just fine. dior, armani, versace, balmain, mugler, valentino, among others, they were all doing well at the time.

reminds me of hedi for saint laurent and celine. god knows some pleb will come along ten years from now and the same of hedi, that he "turned the fashion industry on its head and made it a billion dollar industry." and then take that to mean he was a good designer as well. i liked what he did at dior homme (who doesn't?) but his design has been stale for over a decade at this point

Not the same thing.

What Tom Ford did was change they way they advertised as well, which is why he was so profitable. His run in the 90s is still influencing the fashion industry today without a doubt.

Still, exactly what Virgil, Kanye, Jebbia etc. posse has done the past few years. Look how much LVMH & Kering stocks have went up, would've never been able to do that if it wasn't for the previously mentioned guys changing the '''culture'''

The thing is none of them have a Domenico De Sole to help with making their brands true success stories and they are or previously were focused on streetwear and fast fashion and not high fashion (which is a harder crowd to build). This is why high fashion kind of refused to take them seriously only until recently. Virgil's clothes are ugly and I like Kanye but he copies and steals style and design just as much as Virgil does. Supreme has kind of always stayed in their lane and remained a skate or streetwear brand, and managed to be extremely profitable, which is something I can respect.

you didnt really touch the central point i made in refutation of yours. your claim in essence: tom ford turned around two businesses therefore the entire industry. my point: other businesses were doing well, the industry was doing fine. then i made an analogy about hedi, who also turned around two businesses, saying therefore someone in the future might overinterpret this feat in the same way.

your new point: doesnt deal with the point that other businesses were successful at the time and the industry was fine. sidesteps this issue and says bascially "tom ford is different from hedi because hedi did not have influential advertising." we are not in disagreement about that. however, this only takes away from your credit for tom ford, not add to it: terry richardson is arguably more responsible for tom ford's advertising success than tom. this happens again in your new post here: >>14076524 where someone other than tom is credited with the success of the brands and influence on the industry. aside from that, the point is also very likely mistaken, as LVMH, kering, and the other brands we are discussing also have CEOs, directors, and presidents that play a similar role as domenico. i also am also struggling to make sense of how a "true success story" is different from other success stories

's pathetic how people think tom ford is the pinnacle of menswear. yuck. he's nothing but a glorified marketer. tom ford is an a-z solution lifestyle brand. like a more exclusive ralph lauren on steroids. a man should be able to go in there and get everything he needs. problem is all the fucking clothes are boring and you can get every thing he sells elsewhere, cheaper, more exclusive and better quality. for instance his suits are very england and savile row inspired. problem is that his are overpriced and of lesser quality. literally just go to savile row and get one tailored instead. everything tom ford sells for men feels like a fucking rehash over and over and over and over again. it's not fashion, to me. his womenswear is miles better.
