How hard is it to make your own fragrances at home as a hobby? Can anybody explain the process in the simplest short way?

>> No.13980428

hi i'm peter from fragranceview. i like niche fragrances and aliens. bob lazar is my hero. i hate synthetics and can smell them in basically 99 percent of the market. i know this because i went to vegas and bested all the sales associates and when i told them what's what they all clapped and quit their jobs and protested synthetics in the fragrance market. i like oud wood and hope to come out with my own line that you can all sample. ppl don't really like me because i expose the synthetics in their perfumes and they hate me for it. they write me hateful comments but i don't really care except for that one time i made a 30 minute video defending myself but other than that i don't care because i care about the fragrance community. i believe that fragrances can evoke memories and is a form of escapism they can bring joy and comfort and can be a portal to another place in time. speaking of portals i believe aliens have created a portal to another dimension where fragrance is revered and a single spray can transport you to your childhood. thank you for your time.

Actually making fragrances is piss easy. It’s literally just adding ingredients to alcohol and stirring.

Making fragrances that smell good... well, that’s something else entirely. It’s a ton of trial and error, very meticulous work (testing combinations of notes on strips, adding single drops of ingredients at a time to test concentration, etc.), and it requires a lot of precision. Also, if you don’t live in a country that has sites that sell ingredients for perfumery, importing is a bitch because many ingredients are considered hazardous materials (flammable, or can be caustic in large concentrations), and require permits that can be expensive and take time to get. It’s also going to require a decent chunk of money upfront, as you’ll likely want to buy more than you think you’d strictly need because again, there is a lot of trial and error, plus some ingredients are only available in larger sizes.

So basically, unless you’re really serious about doing it, it’s probably not worth it.

Yes and no. I dont mean to be pretentious - BdC is a great fragrance, and the most important thing is definitely that you enjoy wearing it. I'm just giving you a hard time.

If you lurk this board and smell around though, you will find there is indeed more too it than "oh hey this smells good" - including yes, personality and intent. But hey, BdC may very well check those boxes for you, as it does for many.

High end department stores (Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks, etc) have more selection (Creed, Tom Ford, By Kilian, Le Labo, etc).
They are free to smell, and are happy to offer a few samples of the ones you like. The sales people here work for the designers and are familiar with the fragrances, unlike what you will find at sephora or macys.

Best to go in with an idea of what you are looking for so they can help you find something you might actually enjoy. Even as simple as
>I think I want something fresh
>I think I want something woody
>I think I want something versatile

Fresh summer

Dark, warming winter

Crisp, clean for work

Woody, masculine

Subtle, Well-rounded for all seasons

It’s all personal preference so saying that a fragrance is essential is silly. For me the pinnacle of “crisp and clean” is Grey Vetiver, but if you don’t like it it’s hardly essential.

I've recently started playing with perfume making myself. It doesn't take much going into the rabbit hole to realize that virtually every non-niche (and by niche I mean actual niche not Margiela or Tom Ford) perfume maker basically buys their ingredients from two same chemical companies. Moreover, if you think about "non-synthetic" ingredients as Tom Fords meeting Arabs to buy Oud from them after smoking opium or visiting Amazonian River tribes then this is a complete bs. They all buy the same ingredients from same Swiss companies. Finally, juice is worth a small fraction of a price. >90% of the price is marketing. It makes looking for nice cheapies so much fun.

I recently had a good laugh reading a thread on fragrantica with people discussing the best smelling oud and going over the top with rationalizations for their choices. What made it funny was knowing that Tom Ford uses nothing else than plain Givaudan's oud. I can't imagine that anyone with a connection to internet is able to still shit on arabian copies of these scents using literally the same ingredients.

I know niche fragrances are expensive in yours (first world people) perspective, but my question is: Why?

Here in Brazil a bottle of any designer fragrance is in an equivalent level, monetarily speaking, of some niche fragrances in a first world country. Or even more expensive, when you consider some factors (salary, taxes, etc.).

For example. If we want to buy a 100ml Sauvage it will cost at least R$300/$80 (our minimum wage is R$998/$270 a month). Any Creed for the retail price would surpass this value easily. Of course people who buy this kind of thing around here don't work for the minimum wage, but I'm just stating it to make my point of view easier to comprehend.

So I'd like to understand why niche fragrances are so expensive from your perspective, since your incomes are much higher and the prices proportionally lower. It would be no harm to spend a bit more on this kind of fragrance from time to time, since you already buy designer ones for a good price.

Brazilian economics major here; this is a very misleading post.
A 100ml bottle of BDC would cost between 450~500 BRL (120~135 USD).
A 100ml bottle of MI would cost between 1300~1500 BRL (350~400 USD) in Brazil, which strikes me as a proportional increase in value given the target market (people that make 3 to bogus times minimum wage). To them, it is worth it to spend more to get the best.
The people that do make minimum wage are the ones that feel the difference in price, but they wouldn't be buying designer frags in the first place, that's what cheap brands are for (Boticário, Jequiti, Zara)
My point is, the price difference isn't noticeably larger in Brazil than in the US, proportionally speaking. Therefore, the same reasons that motivate americans to buy niche apply to upper-middle class brazilians and above.

the same

edp vaporizers should spray shorter and smaller bursts so you aren't at risk of overdoing it

my advice is 3 sprays in 3 locations of choice, 4 is pushing it for a man

Thinking about it I haven't really got a citrus based scent in my lineup since my decant of VPH ran out in the summer.
I'm not sure if I'd prefer a night time scent like Black XS that smells like a sweet candy lemon, or if I'd prefer something for the heat but anyways, where should I look for testing out?
I'd get a bottle of VPH but it only lasts 2 hours on my skin...

Armaf Voyage Bleu

Any other Armaf, Rasasi dupes worth adding? The problem I have with more popular dupes is that often there is a similar cult around them as around originals and it's hard to judge whether they're worth the hype or not solely using reviews and rate. However, there must be some hidden gems.

Or maybe we should keep this list out of clones/dupes and list only genuine cheap and great perfumes? It seems to be a controversial topic for a reason. Not all of them are any good comparing to originals. Listing several clone producers like Perfume Parlour, Armaf, Swiss Arabian, Rasasi, Surratti just to make people aware of them should be enough.

If anything the cooler temperatures should help preserve your fragrances because lower temperatures == decreased volatility relative to, say, room/ambient temperature. The lower the temperature, the less kinetic energy the molecules have to escape the bulk liquid/surface, so this isn't really a concern.

someone just needs to make an equivalent list for spring/summer, make it into a picture and it will be good to go. on the other hand the category of "other cheap frags" is huge and would need a lot of work done before it can be included in the op. right now theres just mostly woodsy listed

They were likely closed on NYE and NYD, during which time orders piled up. They also sometimes take up to two weeks to ship if they've somehow fallen behind on receiving inventory. Their system seems to allow orders to be placed against stock of almost-arrived products that aren't quite in their warehouse for picking. Receiving often fucks over shipping in a warehouse operation.
