Overall the SS 18 collection was, on first pass, provoking and interesting in its depiction of modern subculture through Henry’s own lens. He clearly buys into his own world and style: a mix of contemporary pop culture, punk, exoticism, eccentrism, and prep in a manner that triggers the senses immediately, and drives desire to know the character behind the fit.

However, over time, one feels that the clothing lacks sophistication and depth; the characters, while appealing from the stylings and models of runway show, are not reflected within the pieces themselves. The only piece that stands out on its own is the Columbine sweater, which only remains in the consciousness via shock value. Henry certainly has potential, but his designs are currently too flat and lack the defining character we saw, for instance, in the work of Martin Margiela, early Raf Simons, Etc.. Overall his work feels immature and lacks perspective. Hopefully as time progresses we will see Henry grow in his base of references and explore more of his cultural environment. Later collections could pave the way for a true revival of fashion in the wake of the devaluation and debasement we have seen created by Demna, Vetements, and Balenciaga.
