Anyway, Archie taste is heavily skewed towards Rolex cause he's an old fatman.

I'll give you my list instead
>Seamaster, Speedmaster
>IWC Marks
>Vacheron Overseas
>Submariner no-date

Other watches are unnecessary. Especially Patek. Who gives a fuck about muh complications. Swiss watches should be finely engineered tools that look good and expensive, not under-the-radar gold pieces with moonphases.

JLC Master Controls are fucking nice, but dress watches are dead, so don't even bother.

It's a tough one Anon. To be serious, the question then becomes 'why do you need a gold watch specifically"?

Is it for formal occasions? To compete in the office clandestinely?

Gold watches signify old-school wealth, so getting a gold watch today that isn't really fully gold nor is interesting and respectable as a movement is something of an unfortunate or ironic comment on consumerism and traditionalism.

If I were to get a gold watch, I'd save up and wait until I got something that has more value and aesthetic appeal.

That being said, why not try for something simpler but more beautiful. Hold on.

Well, if it's just for a fashion issue, then definitely don't spend much money on it, as your style could change. But stick with Seiko or Citizen; in my view, Citizen is a better bet because it's cheaper and excellent in terms of their solar power engineering. Some of their designs are really beautiful in my eyes. But to be fair, I only find them beautiful because they're conservative and 'classic'....that might not be in your wheelhouse.

Okay, here's the deal. There's nothing wrong with getting a Citizen, so you're not going to find anyone who will say, 'Don't get it because of x'. If it's purely for fashion, then it fulfills the criteria of being a watch that might end up in a drawer a few years from now, never to see the light of day again.

There are lots of Anons here who might wish to take the discussion to another level though...where we think of pieces that we would want to not only buy but hand down to the next generation. pic related.

I'm not saying that you need to consider it...I'm just saying that you might not get responses from anyone else on this board at this time because the quality of watch you're looking at is not at the same manufacture point as what is commonly discussed in /wt/ when it comes to gold watches.

Good luck with your purchase though. I've been thinking seriously about something gold myself....but that's another discussion for another day.

3 in rotation. speedmaster, casio f91, and swatch tarot. rotation is based entirely on weather/activity like beach or rain is automatic casio f91, or outfit. sometimes the clothes are real formal so its fun to throw in a bright colored swatch to add some lightheartednes. or wearing the speedmaster with a really basic cheap outfit smartens the whole thing up and gives you a pass for dressing like a bum with a shiny bracelet.

They still operate as their own thing though). I feel like there are a ton of extremely little things that big watch companies (good ones) dont do that could easily help their market share by a lot.

It feels like fucking video games where the 18 layers of company red tape stops products from JUST delivering. They do, and honestly it's a really good sign from them. Spec wise it delivers what you'd expect from $315 watch, better lume, better movement, solid end links too. if it was a ray instead of a mako I would buy it. If they can apply what they learn from the community when they made that to the normal models, they would be golden. Put sapphire on ray/mako, charge another 10 if they have to. Keep bambino sizes down. Keep orient star designs relatively tasteful and dont make every amazing looking one a weird limited edition JDM only thing you cant buy (they have a bunch that have red sunburst dials that are beautiful, and completely impossible to buy)

The problem is some fucked up wirebonds due to battery leakage.

What happens when the inevitable silicon and molecular printing wars begin between the houses in terms of competing escapement designs with new oscillators? Also, do you think it's now too late for the Daniel's escapement to make the difference it could have made if it appeared in the early 1930s? Also do you guys consider the new oscillators (specifically the Zenith, but also the AP and other designs as well) to be 'traditional' in the sense that the watch is still controlled by physical actions and reactions, or do you see it as a form of cheating due to the new materials being used?

The reason I bring it up was because I had no idea that other companies were experimenting with new oscillators...but they are. GP has one, Zenith has theirs, both silicon printed I think, while AP has one that they claim works without lubrication but is of relatively traditional materials.

Given the history, one would think that all of them are trying to develop something that will be as universally adopted as the lever escapement, but the way I see it, the new technology that is continuously being developed around silicon printing means that there are many possibilities as to how to regulate an escape wheel.

To make matters more complicated, couldn't it be possible that eventually you'd reach a kind of standard of rate that would be 0.0 or close to it across the spectrum of manufacturers, such that individual design differences wouldn't actually matter? At that point, the only things that would matter when buying a watch would be what it looked like, and what materials the outer shell was made of. It would be the quartz revolution all over again, only this time, it might be worse.

Of course, we just have to wait a few years before the Chinese start printing these movements....

>> No.13872065

>>13872032
>What happens when the inevitable silicon and molecular printing wars begin between the houses in terms of competing escapement designs with new oscillators?
That's not really an inevitability. The only established player in the industry with a potential incentive to try and be disruptive with mass produced engineered silicon oscillator movements is LVMH, due to their also-ran status in most market segments.

However, LVMH could always decide they don't want to attempt to fundamentally disrupt the under $3500 market segment, and reserve their engineered silicon oscillator movements for more expensive and limited production pieces where they would just become another niche movement type.

>Also do you guys consider the new oscillators (specifically the Zenith, but also the AP and other designs as well) to be 'traditional' in the sense that the watch is still controlled by physical actions and reactions, or do you see it as a form of cheating due to the new materials being used?

I don't think that'll happen for quite a while, if at all. It'd have to come down in price enough to end up in shitters rather than 'haute horology' pieces. Zenith's amazing new oscillator still does "only" 0.3s/d, which is comparable to a cheap quartz watch. To try and make a fully mechanical movement anywhere near HAQ levels of accuracy would be amazing to say the least.

But this is my point.

Right now, they're doing exactly what you describe: the silicon oscillators for both companies are reserved for their higher-up pieces. But once the Chinese develop (i.e. steal) the technology to do so and print en masse, then the Swiss will have no choice but to find a way to deal with it. Hell, if the Japanese went this route, can you imagine what that would do to their lower end Seiko department? At least their spring drive is somewhat different, so they'd have to the two in the lineup - an escapement, and a spring drive. But the Swiss would be shit out of luck...

>>13872070
I wonder about this though. I've been thinking a bit about this problem only because the silicon oscillators really are an extreme step towards greater control, but because they are not handmade themselves, it removes a huge segment of the advertising ideas behind high-end watches, namely, that they're handmade by old men using centuries of passed down experience and heritage. Once you do away with that kind of advertising ploy, what do you have? You can't compete with high end quartz movements for accuracy, so that window's gone. You can't compete with a movement made entirely by hand (like old Daniels).

In other words, by replacing a component that is the most important for the watch with one that is printed by technology and not crafted by hand, it has moved outside of the realm in the same way that Quartz did in the 70's. And in all honesty I'm not sure what possible restriction there can be in terms of either the Japanese or the Chinese replicating this cheaper. Maybe not today...but 5 years from now? All they need to do is buy a Zenith, reverse engineer the design and tolerances, and get a hold of the machining necessary to print the parts. I'd be astonished if this was not accomplished within a decade...does anyone know of what could keep this from happening?

They won't be able to do it for the next few decades at least. The Chinese Government has much higher priorities for photolithographic equipment than making watch movements.

>Hell, if the Japanese went this route, can you imagine what that would do to their lower end Seiko department?
Seiko Epson would be unlikely to make the first move on this front due to internal corporate politics, which would likely regard these types of movements as a threat to the market position of Spring Drive models.

That said, if LVMH were to take the plunge and go full bore on trying to disrupt the sub $3,500 market, Seiko Epson would be in a position to fairly quickly ramp up to large scale production of these types of movements due to having considerable photolithographic production capacity on hand from their semiconductor division.

I thought LVMH was only the Swiss manufacturers? Obviously LVMH would shoot themselves in the foot if they made these oscillators available from the ground up, that much is clear. But Seiko isn't a part of that, and they'd definitely have the ability to research this tech, wouldn't they?

And again, the Chinese. What is holding them back?

>>13872099
Interesting, on all points. The Chinese argument makes sense, I guess, but the Seiko one...how do you know about the internal politics?

By the way, I remember you being curious - my Daini 5spy HAQ twin quartz superior is performing very well so far, on par with Suwa produced HAQ superiors. I haven't done a controlled test yet but will post the results when I do.

>> No.13872181

What he was referring to is that while LVMH would have to buy the photolithographic capacity to be able to industrialize production of silicon oscillator movements, Seiko Epson likely has enough existing photolithographic capacity to be able to produce these types of movements at industrial quantities without having to add any capacity, and since he recognized me, he was joking because he knew I would end up mentioning that fact.

>but the Seiko one...how do you know about the internal politics?
Large Japanese companies tend to have fairly stuffy, traditional corporate cultures. While Seiko Epson is the more innovative and experimental of the two main Seiko divisions, they are still very Japanese, and aren't usually inclined to adopt disruptive technological change right away, especially when it would undermine their existing product hierarchy. Seiko Epson spent decades developing Spring Drive, and basically regards it as their watchmaking pride and joy.

>>13872108
Thanks. Interesting about the Daini HAQ. I need to read up on Daini's quartz production in that period a bit more, I don't even know off hand whether they were making their high end quartz movements completely internally at Daini or not in that period.

Because, so long as you accept the premise that the goal for a mechanical tool watch chronograph is the reliable ability to accurately time events (and not the running time, since a non chronograph can do that just as well), the the L5100's technical advantages put it head and shoulders past any of its competitors.

It has:

1) A vertical clutch, meaning smooth engagement of he chronograph and no initial littering of the chronograph second hand.

2) Cam actuation, which is more robust against shocks than column wheel designs.

3) A central register chronograph minute hand, greatly increasing chronograph legibility.

4) The chronograph is directly driven, massively increasing shock resistance and g-force resistance compared to indirectly driven chronographs, which can overcome the spring tension meshing the chronograph to the drivetrain and cause the chronograph to stop running brief intervals.

The L5100 is the only mass produced directly driven chronograph ever made, as far as I know.

The real question here is that will manufacturers compete in making those new non traditional mechanical movements that offer quartz accuracy?
The answer is no, because those movements do not have the soul of a mechanical watch in the same way as the traditional mechanicals do.
Modern mechanical watch market is based on luxury, emotions, tradition, craftmanship and finishing. No need to come up with new movement types that fight with some of the principles.
Personally I think new developments will come in the quartz department with built in atomic clocks most likely.
