Does this entire thread have to be shitposting about hating and not hating rolex? Rolex makes good watches but they are becoming more expensive compared to similar watches. If you like it and can afford it its fine. There is no need to fight about rolex. Beyond that if you want to sell a rolex it will not be difficult and can be done anywhere in the world. They can also be serviced pretty much anywhere. If you like other brands more buy those.

If there were to be a rule of thumb of when it's appropriate to buy a luxury watch, such as a rolex, I'd say (and this is just my opinion) it would have to be after you have paid down your mortgage and any other debt. When you're economically secure like that, and when you feel like you're saving enough for your pention, your children's education or other expenses and responsibility that ought to come first, then go ahead and buy a luxury piece like a rolex. Well done!

Today I took out my late pep-pep's recently restored Poljot for a spin. I do have one or two good condition replacement dials of this exact model in my parts stash, but I've decided to keep this as original as possible. Apart from a complete movement service I only replaced the crystal, the broken balance wheel, put in a crown as the original was gone, and put on a jap Maruman expanding bracelet on it.

The strap is not really accurate, as such a strap would not have been available in commie Hungary in the 70's, but at least it's about the same period. I have no idea what was the original strap my grandpa wore it with, or what happened to it, but none of my leather straps really worked on it.

"Overpriced" is a weird concept in luxury goods like watches. Honestly the only useful concept is overpriced relative to competition. A Rolex OP is the best mechanical watch mechanism, on its technical merits, available in a watch at its price point.

With the discontinuation of the sarb line it's a little tougher to say that about too many Seiko watches any more. The 7s is competitive in $60 watches but once you get to $120 Orient starts outclassing it. The 6r and 8l watches are totally outclassed by low end swiss alternatives. The 9r is of course kind of a thing if its own so that might be fine. The 9s is competitive for sure.

80% of men have a wrist size bigger than 6.75 inches or 17.5 cm.
Most wrists above 16cm in circumference has a width of at least 50mm, and it's safe to say that those 80% with a wrist larger than 17.5cm will wear that tudor with ease, based on it's lug to lug, and it's diameter.

If you think everyone should be wearing watches that basically look like women's watches, just because they did 60 years ago, then that's your opinion, but... you're really just a wristlet who's angry because so many watches won't fit you, thus you're dreaming of a world in which the watch industry went back to the sizes of past times.

It's annoying because what other option is there? Watchuseek? Reddit? It's infinitely worse, but still the best option for talking about watches online. Mainly because it's just 1 condensed anonymous general, which lends itself well to watches because then you see a weird mix of shit you otherwise wouldn't.

The alternative is going to a specific section of a forum for JUST _____, then you just post a photo and get "nice ______". Only good for figuring out if there is QC issues or something. Then reddit is reddit, so no real discussion or negativity allowed. (And the discord for here is FUCKING terrible, the dude that shills it shows the users but only 5 people talk about nonsense in it, everyone else looks at it once and bounces)

ceramic cases are hard and brittle. They scratch other materials that leave residue on the case so it still will look as if it has apparent scratches. Using a second crystal for thermo compensation improves accuracy as the first crystal's frequency changes with deltas in ambient temperatures. The second crystal determines temperature and along with a microprocessor corrects for the change in rate of the first crystal. Thermocompensation of the timing crystal improves accuracy.

>> No.13853233

Thanks, that's a good start.
Any info what's the difference between ceramics used in watches and normal "china"? I would imagine they have to have at least some properties which makes them less brittle than the usual stuff.

I'm not sure if I follow you correctly. I was under the impression that those old seikos for example used two crystals so that they average each other out? Reducing the ambient error caused in each crystal.
How can the second crystal be used to assess the temperature?

>> No.13853244

>>13853233
No the second crystal is used for thermocompensation. The second crystal is a quartz thermometer with a linear temperature coefficient of frequency. So the processor measuring its oscillations determines temperature and can correct for errors in the timing oscillator. Watch cases are typically made of industrial ceramics including zirconium-oxide. They are very hard and typically produced via sintering processes as apposed to be formed by hand.
