I think they're great. They look great. The Gro-Cord outsole is great. The fiber glass shank is vastly preferable to the regular steel shanks they normally use (I have to go through metal detectors at work). I also like the whole idea of, "We're going make the best boot we can, cutting no corners, and this is it."

The only thing I'd mention is that the new last (no. 220) they use for is very small. I went UP an entire size to get a fit that worked. I highly recommend trying them on before buying. I couldn't (my store didn't have them), so I had to order them online and return them TWICE before finally getting a size that wasn't horrible.

They do look really nice. I feel almost bad that Red Wing is making all these changes to appeal to the modern audience but I get it, their bulbous toe boxes just aren't that cool unless it's for a specific aesthetic. I'm still just confused as to why RW made the Sheldon model if they already had the Merchant and then went and made the Williston which seems barely different than the Sheldon.

That being said, the Merchants are still their best looking boot. It's on the same last as the Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths but without the bump toe. They look like you could wear the hell out of them and beat them to shit and they'd just look better for it. They will be my next Red Wing boot if I could ever just stop buying White's boots instead.

Depends on where you live. It only gets as low as about 30 degrees f where I live so mine are fine for winter, but if it gets a lot colder then that I would say they would be better for more of a fall/spring boot. How much do you “mother” your boots?

I have some Wolverine 1k boots that I got last year and the soles are wearing a little. I know they’re classed as “work boots”, but should they be treated more like a dress shoe in the sense that they’re meant to be cleaned, moisturised and in good shape?

I wipe them down, put shoe trees in and you’d think they were worth £1m. Am I overthinking it? I obviously want them to last but since they’re built to take a beating should I worry?

I was considering getting a rubber sole added but wondered if it would ruin the look.

>> No.13850983

>>13850909
Depends on the boot. Some need a little, some need a lot (shell for example is more hassle than it's worth IMO)

>I know they’re classed as “work boots”
They've got leather soles. NO real workboot has leather soles in this day and age. They are absolutely 100% dressy boots; the style might be "work boot" but they are not in fact ever designed for any kind of work besides walking around.
>but since they’re built to take a beating should I worry?
A boot made to take a beating is tough but ultimately disposable; like all those army boots and boots worn by actual proles for hard manual labor. Your 1k's aren't the same, disposability wise.

They're made with leather soles (that are neither doubled nor oak-bark tanned), and have some grade of chromexcel as an upper leather which isn't tough enough for real work boots but not a formal boot leather type either.

So treat them nicely, as you say, like any decent footwear: conditioning when needed (and only when needed: too many fags these days over fucking do it because they see other morons doing it online), trees after use and rotate etc.

Difference with boots like 1k's and actual formal footwear (that's "babied" normally) is that you can let the 1k's get scuffed up, beat up a little (or a lot) and they'll look better than say a pair of black capped oxfords you'd normally want immaculate when paired with a suit.

On topies:
Thing is, goodyearwelt footwear only has so many resoles before the thing's fucked.
Maybe if you had access to some kind of mythic, godly cobbler that's long since become extinct in most of the world you could go all out with resoles, but since you probably don't have that I say get the sole protectors.
Or, depending on your wear pattern, toe taps.
Leather soles wear out 10x faster when wet, and with winter approaching I'd say get them, but done well from a decent cobbler (hard to find these days ffs).
Topies, when done well, shouldn't be seen anyways so I dunno how it'd "ruin the look".

Also, I have no idea what size I'd be, so I don't want to take the risk until I talk with them about it. Good luck in the sale though.

Why are you selling? Quality not good? Fit not good? etc? I'm curious if there's anything bad I should know about the product in general...because honestly the pics they have make the boots look fucking gorgeous...

Thanks very much. Given my general style a bit of wear isn’t something I’m bothered about. If I’m going somewhere that requires dressier clothes I won’t be wearing boots.

I get that they’re primarily a dress shoe, but they’re certainly more rugged than a delicate oxford.

I’m guessing a good cobbler will probably require a trip in to London. My concern about ruining the look is more to do with the silhouette because I’ve seen some bad jobs where it doesn’t sit as it should and just looks awful. I don’t wear them too often, and only in the cooler months so maybe once a week for six months, if that. I just planned on wearing them more because my eight year old pair of Clarks Desert Boots finally became unwearable and thought I’d wear my 1k rather than buy new shoes.

That's generally done with "fine" footwear when the manufacturer puts a commando or more heavily lugged than usual (for its style) sole put on.
Commando soles are thick, and puncturing through it to get it welted isn't necessary (and may not be possible for some manufacturers) and kinda defeats the purpose of a more rugged sole that's supposed to see a lot of wear and be easily replaced. Might depend on the brand and thickness of sole though. I've got a pair of alden indy's with a really chunky commando sole and there's no stitch through, and some others aldens with a sorta half-assed commando half-sole thing where it is stitched through.

Rubber soles are hard to stitch through, particularly for more old-school (and I mean real old school) type makers like Vass (who are literally hand welted; none of this new age good year welt nonsense).

It was hard for their craftsman to welt through the dainite though now I think they've got a way to do it. I think they did some really funny shit at first too, like trying to hide the stitch under a flap of rubber like they normally do with their leather soles.

Going into my local electricians union and i need work boots but i dont want the usual timbs or shitty Walmart steel toes that tradesmen usually wear. Anyone know of any good quality boots that fit like shia's (pic related) but also wont torment my feet throughout a day of work.

You can have boots stretched a little by a cobbler or diy.

What`s your opinion on Panama Jack?
I would love to get some Chippewas, but American brands are hard to get and/or overpriced in my country.
I need a boot that both goes well with jeans indoors (and won`t be too hot) and will serve well for city walks in a mild (about -10) winter with plenty of mud and salt.

But they are not the cheapest even in the "Goodyear welted work boots" category.
Well, when i was a poor student, i would just buy 25-50$ army boots. Tough, but real leather. They are ugly, but waterproof and can be used most of the year depending on weather. Lived for 2 seasons, generally.
For more fashionable boots i would just try to look for sales. In my experience, the look of faux-leather turns to shit in an instant.
