hey, I wanna get a nice watch for 180 euros for a buddy for his bachelor party. I realise that 180 euros won't buy much, but what would be your choice in that price point? It needs to look good and not be made of shit.

Also, it's gotta come with a brown leather strap out of the box (not my condition, I realise it's retarded).

Thanks a million guys.

Customer argued with me over a $1.75 repair job that didn't work out. Basically I fixed the mangled hands on her wall clock, and removed the seconds hand as it pivot was deformed, and obstructing the movement. I did this so maybe she won't have to spend $25 on a movement swap, but it didn't work out and the movement jammed up again a few days later. Basically she sperged out about having to pay $1.75 for "nothing" (for starters, other watchniggers won't even look at it for less than $7).

I was thinking of getting an automatic but am restricted to wearing a g-shock for work Monday through Friday and I don't want to have to set it all the time. I don't want a winder for several reason.
1. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a quiet and good winder.
2. I identify myself with the "winders damage the movement" camp
3. I figure wearing the watch for an hour or two is less of a hassle then fiddling with the winder

Would you care to answer my original question if you know the answer or are you just going to be condescending and sassy?

>> No.13801294

>>13801285
>are you just going to be condescending and sassy
yes

Let's be honest with each other senpia, there is a lot of factors which we don't know. Like what's the power reserve of the watch we are talking about, and how "actively" would you wear it in that one hour each night. Shaking it for a few minutes would also be an option and it would be more effective than you walking with it. Also what if it had hand wind? See. It's not a question that has an exact answer.

>> No.13801298

>>13801294
Thanks for a more serious reply. The power reserve is 40h and I was mostly wondering if there are any general guidelines as to how long it takes to fully charge the reserve. I used to shake an old Seiko 5 I had to keep it going between usage but stopped doing so after reading that the shaking is bad for the movement.

>> No.13801305

>>13801298
>shaking is bad for the movement

Fuck I do this. I don't really shake it but I rotate it quickly so it winds, does that also do damage? More of a clockwise rotating in small circles

>> No.13801315

The Seiko Shuffle™ is not harmful to the movement #fakenews

>> No.13801316

>>13801305
I can't provide any proof but I've read comments from prominent watch forum users claiming that it can damage the watch (or I guess it perhaps mostly damages the rotor itself).

>> No.13801318

>>13801298
Well the mere existence of the movement isn't good for it either. Abrasion is a thing. If you don't shake it like a gorilla it's fine. Also you you shouldn't really gorilla shake it anyways because shocks are really not good for accuracy.

To give you some numbers, about 2-5 minutes of light shaking/rotating would be enough to fill up the reserve.

>> No.13801324

>>13801298
After more consideration there actually should be some info out there somewhere. There are after all watches with a power reserve meter and it should be fairly simple to make a guesstimate based on that even though they aren't exactly super common.

Question to those who aren't poor and can afford Rolex without ruining their finances. Are you holding off on purchasing one or another one? I paid a bit less than retail for a new Explorer II in 2016 and I have seen prices go insane on subs and GMTs. Morons are paying 15k for the new Pepsi on a jubilee. I've seen people buy new Sub w/date for 11k when my local AD said if I want to wait a month or two he can get me one for bang on retail of 8100 with no tax if I pay cash. The Pepsi too if I want to wait.

So my question is, should I stop buying watches for a year or two and wait for the panic sales with an eventually over saturated market? I am doing the same with purchasing a new home. I don't currently own and know that in New York the prices cannot be sustained with current wages. We will get an economic downturn in the next few years, especially in burger land becuase everyone will overreact to whichever party wins this November and in 2020.

Some boomer on his youtube channel was getting hammered for this by pajeets and persians becuase they don't want to beleive they over paid for their sub.

why the FUCK don't casio/timex make their metal digital watches entirely out of stainless steel rather than plating the watchface with fake silver/gold alloys >:(

I love my casio world time but the fucking silver coating started peeling off so quickly, had it for years and on the face you can see the copper / resin coating peering through >:(

If you really want the Pepsi or a new Sub then simply wait. The people paying 200% over RRP for the newest GMT either have so much money it makes no difference to them or they are idiots.

The demand for certain watches right now isn't sustainable. Just look at the Nautilus, it's *cheaper* to buy a yellow or rose gold Nautilus on the grey market compared to the steel version.

I bought one on eBay for 30 quid but just sold it for 50 :^)

This is the W-38. Funnily enough the best way to find these is to search for “digital Casio” and set condition to used. Seeing as the modern Casio’s are disposable, a large proportion will be vintage ones.
Also try it with Seiko although these are a bit more expensive. And try citizen and Lorus.

Okay, so here it is. It's really not as bad irl as in the seller's pics. Of course the finely ghosted bezel is scratched up, but I'm not even sure if it should be replaced. I'd replace it with and aftermarket new one, but I'm not sure if I'll be flipping it after restoration or not. Also the bezel right now is bidirectional, gotta find out what's wrong with it.

Also so far the things I noticed:
>it's smoll. 36mm on a diver, that's also integrated-bracelet in not very much
>so far it's comfy, but I might need another link. The integrated bracelet helps a lot with comf
>the movement has a separately adjustable hour hand, like on a GMT watch. I guess they did this, because the movement is probably real accurate (ETA quartz movements generally are pretty high grade)
>crown threading is intact
>lume is near-dead, but otherwise not bad, but the lume on the hands is clearly "moldy". I still don't know if I want to relume it
>sapphire crystal only has a few very thin scuffs, almost unnoticeable without magnification. Though they might just be some crap stuck on either the outside or inside of the crystal

Also messy workbench. All in all there are a a few things to repair, but this old post-quartz shitter has the potential to look great.
