How do we feel about IWC?

They obviously make some nice looking watches (pic related) but they’re a bit shitter aren’t they? Pic related has ETA I believe which is a pretty good sign of a shitter. what's with enthusiasts and turning their noses up at quartz watches?

is it just some hive mind meme they do to fit in and seem more knowledgeable? cos it felt that way since no one when they seem disappointed that a watch is quartz never articulate or say why they are disappointed or don't like them.

at least that's what I get from some watch YouTube reviewers and watch forums. is having better accuracy and reliability really that much of a negative thing? or don't they like it simply because how the seconds hand moves. cos that would be a pretty autistic thing to be bothered by

Level 1 and level 2 watchfuckers (enthusiasts) just dislike them because they don't know how much better it is. Also youtubers will say swear by anything if you pay them or they get views from of it. Mechanical watches are literally an outdated technology. it's just the "feeling" you get with them. Or if you go highend you get some form of art too.

Quartz aren't perceived as "real watches" because they don't use that old, traditional and centuries old tech. That would be a lost art if it wasn't for horologyfags, much like fine enamel work has been lost and contemporaries had to rediscover it from scratch.
It does make sense, but not from a strictly /fa/ perspective.
Also, I think it's cool to have a watch that can work after a nuke killed all electronics with its EMP blast.

Alright /wt/, so pretty much everyone has a Seiko Penis by now (and a dress Poljot, and and F-91W, and an Amphibia) and our autism even managed to jack up the prices of the King Quartz and Grand Quartz models. So I propose the next /wt/ fad:
Obtaining pre-Bond Seamasters (and maybe other uggo 80'-s/early 90's Swiss quartz divers like TAG Heuer 2000) before other autists and youtubers realize their value and inflate their prices.

My impulse-buy Pre-Bond is on the way and I'm starting to like the idea of keeping it after restoration more and more.

Not really, no.
You see, on that budget we can set you up with a fancy-looking mid-brand swiss quartz with a $50 movement, but it's something you probably don't want to spend 500 bucks on.
For about $600-700 and some luck you can get a decent-for-the-price, new, greymarket watch with a Selita SW200/ETA 2824 movement combined with a Dubois-Depraz module, like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dreyfuss-Co-Moonphase-1925-full-date-automatic-men-watch/263978857823?hash=item3d765db55f:g:-aAAAOSwL4lbG6eI
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dreyfuss-Co-1925-Black-Mens-Automatic-Moonphase-DGS00068-20-2-Years-Warranty/283013170801?epid=651411946&hash=item41e4e64671:g:31IAAOSwFnxag2z6
Normal preventive service that's due every 5-6 years is going to cost you at least $200. Any mechanical incident happens to the watch, it's probable that the whole DD module will have to be changed. If you still do want one, then look into greymarket Louis Erard, Oris, Junghans and Dreyfuss & Co. watches on ebay, amazon, discount sites, etc.

Sorry anon, they absolutely won't hold their value. New watches are heavily depreciating assets, especially in this segment, don't ever spend a significant amount of your money on them.

Rolex and above for high end, or Nomos for low mid end (german).

actually based on a UG compax

Well Undone uses the VK movement with the vertical registers and its 40mm and with straight lugs.

Mine is more similar to the dan henry 1964, which is a straight rip of a vintage omega seamaster. with the perfect 38mm case.

But mine is different because it has the dress chronograph pushers and curved gently sloping lugs.

It's just a simple 3 hand dress watch in gold with gold applied indices and gold hands.

A couple weeks ago there was an amazing deal on a similar seiko for like $40 but it was a non original crown and the crystal was chipped. You can't get the super clear and domed crystal with the very thin bezel by using sapphire, you have to use acrylic.

Working on a customer's post-Soviet Poljot Aviator wristwatch, with a Molnija movement. Looks like someone went at the case with a staking tool to tighten the hole for the pendant tube. I wonder if this was done at the factory. In the 90's when the old Soviet watch manufacturers were dying they sometimes did dodgy shit just to get the watches out of the factory.

I'm not so sure, like I said, 90's Poljot was desperate. I also found a defective screw, that had a cracked head, and there was bluing inside the crack, so it happened in the factory, after machining the screw, and before heat bluing it.

Also this is a legit repair method, to hammer a hole tighter like that, but it's usually a last resort, and for old shitters on their last leg. Not a new watch still in the factory. So yeah, it could be either.

>so I guess I shouldn't be too picky when it comes to vintage watches, I'll probably just be looking for the right style
You're right to an extent, but you don't want to buy some special snowflake model that had a movement that was only produced for like a year before being pulled because of some inherent fault or some shit.
Problem with a lot of these vintage watches, particularly the ones from today's luxury brands that go for "cheap" on the vintage market, is that most of them are probably frankens.
Ie. scant on original parts, shit swapped around with whatever the hackshop had on hand to replace what might have been missing.
Recoloring of the dial is the most common thing besides replacing the crown with whatever they had on hand that vaguely matched and fit.
If the dial is too clean, even if it's been supposedly "restored" it's probably a poo-in-loo re-dial special.
Some of them can look pretty neatly done, most are sloppy and obvious if you're not totally retarded and buy the cheapest shit you find on ebay.

Do some research.
For example, there's a lot of vintage omegas out there with a strange winding mechanism, a "bump" mechanism, I forget what it's called, instead of the standard fare winding rotor.
I've shied away from those things because I know the pretty pathetic watch repairers around where I am would have no fucking idea on how to service one and sending it to swatchmega wouldn't be worth it compared to the price I paid to buy in the first place.

Etc.

>> No.13752216

>>13751613
Fuck yeah nice to see you man. Your dial choice looks a little sterile to me, but it's hard to say how much better it would look in the flesh. Are you just going to go for one dial, or a couple of variant options? And how's the price looking?

If you can pull off the indented sundials, and get the right crystal look, it should sell well.
