I have one. I like it. Quality wise, standard bracelet is bad so replace it, bezel action is poor (not a clicky boi) and the acrylic crystal scratches fairly easily. Otherwise it seems fairly sturdy, very comfortable on the wrist and a nice size for a wristlet like myself.

Accuracy is really meh. That's the only big problem for me (and I steel own one).

They are cheap, good if you want to learn customizing, and tough. Fit and finish are OK, but noting to write home about.

It's a regular caseback so it's easy to change the battery, unlike the more expensive quartz Tunas that have monocoque cases. I see your point. But then why assert that a watch that is operating properly doesn't need service? While the absolute magnitude of the loads on the parts may not be equivalent, in both cases preventative maintenance may avoid a more costly restoration in the future. I think if you reconsider your stance you'll see that giving watches simple servicing (like a cleaning and re-lubricating) every 5-7 years can prevent a much more expensive overhaul involving replacement of parts, thus lowering the total cost of ownership.

>> No.13740779

a modern, properly factory greased and sealed watch would basically need no servicing in your lifetime if you autists could just
1) accept the technological superiority of self-lubricating teflon bushes over muh shitty synthetic rubies
2) keep yourselves from swimming/bathing/showering/washing hands/pissing with your watches on, and especially from opening the back to autistically gaze at the movement

Ok, I see where it goes, but: no, being vintage electronics, bleeding edge at that, they do need regular servicing: Teflon bushes do work, but mechanical moving parts were not factory teflon coated and pre-lubricated as they'd do now, and the lubricants back then were much, much shittier. They were not properly sealed (to the point of not claiming any water-resistance, basically). Early quartzes also eat batteries and I wouldn't be comfortable with not changing it every 8 months or so, so it must be opened quite regularly.

are ppl really that bothered by a tick like it's the end of the world or a complete deal breaker rather than a sweep?

I get enjoying the novelty of the sweep but some people be acting like if it doesn't have a sweep then the watch is borderline unwearable and hurts your wrist doing so or something.

what's the deal? is everyone pretending because they read it somewhere online that you are supposed to prefer mechanical and want to seem like some sort of watch patrician?

I had a really comfy talk with a watchmaker today when I was buying a leather strap and I have to know if what he said about this watch is true or not.
I went there to buy a 18mm strap for this benrus watch and he asked me if I had the watch with me (because that way he can recomend the best one to the watch style and all that), to which I handed the watch, he told me it was a very nice watch and asked me if it was a heirloom or if it was mine, I told him it was mine and that I bought it off the internet, after another compliment he asked me how much it costed me, it was like 35 dollars plus 25 shipping and a little bit more because I replaced the crystal and paid for a service and he told me I was really lucky to buy it at that price as this watch was worth at least 150 dollars and maybe more.
Is it true?
I'll post another photo in a sec, but keep in mind my phone is not the best and I can't get a clear front pic without it getting blurry.

>his name will never be in the Golden Register
>he will never become a member of the prestigious Rolex Quartz Club
>he'll never be given an in-depth personal factory tour whenever he's in Geneva, whenever he feels like it

Read it closely:
At our central headquarters in Geneva there is a Golden Register, a Who’s Who of our clients who proudly count a Rolex Quartz among their most precious possessions. They form the Rolex Quartz Club, one of the most exclusive clubs imaginable… Members of the Club are always welcome at Rolex Geneva. On their first visit, they are invited to sign the Golden Register and can enjoy a personal tour of the Geneva world Headquarters.

And it's all true, and it's how it works, all up to this day: the Club, the closest thing there is to what normans imagine not-so-secret-societies to be. My closest friends from childhood, they were all sons and daughters of members of the Club. I obtained all my scholarships, all my internships, even my first job through the Club, for it is indeed a family. One day I'll marry a daughter, or maybe a niece of a fellow member. The name of my heir will be introduced to the Golden Register when he or she turns 14. And so on, and so on, till eternity...

You know, a quartz Rolex is about the most discriminatory object there is, it's obscenely discriminatory, and that's why it still has a meaning. Unlike a Rolls. Unlike a $10M McMansion. Unlike things any rap "artist" or bitcoin rich conman with some vague idea of how the actually rich lives can buy. The possession of a 5100 or an Oysterquartz means that half a century ago your grandfather was not only wealthy, but refined enough to obtain this rarest of horological objet d'arts: a quartz Rolex provides the purest pedigree.

Whatever of importance happens in this world, no matter where, no matter when, there will always be a man with a quartz Rolex on his wrist behind it.

Yup, fashion watches, far from being the worst offenders, definitely overpriced for what they are, but buy one if you like them.
If you're into the Scandinavian/minimalist design thing you could check out Jacob Jensen (Danish design company, famous for vintage B&Os), Larsson & Jennings (British-Swedish company, shilled to heavens among normies a few years ago, nowadays frequently on sale at Flannels) and Braun (German electronics company, famous for their minimalist clock/watch designs). I think they are not significantly pricier in the grey market, and might be of a somewhat better quality.
Also check out Georg Jensen and Ole Mathiesen if you have significantly more to spend.

new to this thread. why do a lot of you guys seem to hate quartz watches?

Only a couple of trolls and retards here hate quartz.
reason why most watchfags hate quartz is that the basic quartz watch has a movement that costs maybe two dollars and it will not run forever.
Quartz watches are more reliable and accurate than automatics, but because they are cheap and abundant they are not favored by those who seek status and craftanhip (fashion) and brand.

>> No.13741771

for me, watches are more than just a way to keep time. i enjoy mechanical watches because of the art of crafting a movement by hand. when i wear my chronograph, i'm in awe at how it works internally. one day, i'll pass my collection on to someone else, and they'll continue to appreciate them.

I often read this, but in what way? as in the body they put quartz movements in look like garbage?

I mean, I admit that most of the best looking watches have a mechanical movement. but desu I wouldnt mind if the exact same casing had a more reliable, low maintenance quartz at a cheaper price.

automatics seem like a meme for no good reason. ppl act like a mechanical watch will last their lifetime and will never need to waste money on batteries again. but these same types are the ones who constantly flip or buy new watches anywyas. plus to make them last a life time don't you need to do $200 services every 3-5 years hoping it will still maintain accurate times and to stop it wearing out? how is that supposed to be more cost effective than say switching a $15 battery every 5 years?

>> No.13741782

If you want something cheap, reliable that can look good then quartz is fine.

If you are interested in real watch making and appreciate everything involved in producing a good mechanical watch you view quartz as pure trash.

What the fuck does that have to do with mechanical or quartz? I have a quartz watch and an automatic that both belonged to my dad and both are around 40 years old and they're both still totally functional and in good condition and they're both serviceable.

Mechanical watches are not inherently better or more durable or whatever, if anything it's the opposite. You seem to have forgotten that 99% of pre-quartz watches are cheap pin-pallet movements that were made to be disposable and are all sitting in landfills today, just like 99% of post-quartz watches are cheap Chinese quartz movements that will probably get thrown away when it comes time for a battery change. You're comparing the very best of the past to the very worst of today.

those days have passed bro. may have been the case in our dad and grandpa's day because it was the only way to tell time for them back then.

the only watch I would ever pass on was the one that belonged to my grandpa. passing anything from this era is just trying too hard to meme your watch into a heritage item.

No.

I collect high end quartz watches from the 70s and 80s. There's definitely a big meaningful difference between the quality of high-end quartz watches and disposable quartz watches today, although modern high-end quartz watches are also excellent. That said, I've had more trouble with the high-end quartz pieces from the 70s and 80s than I've had with the traditional mechanical watches from the 60s and 70s that I also collect. And when they're not working, there's often very few people who will be able to work on them. The idea that an early quartz piece will be around and working forever, in my experience, is more suspect than the idea that a mechanical watch will.

They're still great, interesting watches to collect.

>If you are interested in real watch making and appreciate everything involved in producing a good mechanical watch you view quartz as pure trash.
>the very best of all eras should always be the standard for comparison
Oh, that must be why I see the "quartz is soulless garbage for plebs" purists here obsessing over antique Haas-Neveux, Ch. Meylan, Henri Blanc, L. Leroy, L. Audemars, U. Jürgensen movements (notice I said movements, not fancy cases and dials) all day, discussing technical intricacies.
Because, you know, those were the very best of the era between, let's say, 1850-1920, the golden age of horology.
There's nothing wrong with being status obsessed or putting subjective aesthetic preferences before actual technology, especially if you're a layman. Making knowledge claims in the field based on what the marketing depts. of the different subsidiaries of the Swatch group had been feeding you in the last decade about what tradition, craftmanship, exclusivity and fine horology means though is, you know, very, very sad. But hey, it's all fine as long as they get to sell you their four figures barely-made-in-china-except-for-the-bracelet, pimped-out-in-house gimmicky shitters.
Alas, we're on /fa/, this is probably to be expected.
