Because there are a limited number of companies making watches with reasonable levels of quality at reasonable pricepoints for those levels of quality. Everyone else is trying to rip you off.

Your choices are, more or less:
Casio
Vostok
CitIzen
Orient
Seiko
Junghans
Sinn
Damasko
Nomos
Tudor (in-house)
Rolex
Zenith (please try not to buy an ugly one though)
Grand Seiko
Jaeger LeCoultre

And above that you are dealing with haute horlogerie which is a separate discussion entirely.

>> No.13618738

I should note that there are a few Hong Kong based microbrands doing reasonable price to quality ratios, but they are pretty niche.

>>13618735
I included nomos, and left out Omega deliberately as I feel they still need to do a bit more to provide a price to quality ratio comparable to in-house Tudors.

I'm sure some will disagree on that point, but, on the plus side Omega has improved their external finishing quite a bit from five years ago.

>> No.13618742

Considering the amount of movement finishing Nomos does, and how much they spent on developing the capacity to design and manufacture complete movements including escapements, I don't think it's fair to call Nomos overpriced, personally.

Nomos' in house movements are fine, it's the exterior finishing that makes me say they're overpriced. Flat lugs, flat case sides, all polished. I wouldn't mind if there was more variety to the case shape, along with some alternating of brushed and polished surfaces. Maybe some more curved crystals would help too.

Sure, I think your points are fair, but the amount of movement finishing they are doing is far more than anyone else close to them in price, so on balance, I don't think they are overpriced even if the external finishing isn't the best.

It's a 5S21-7A10. the 5S21 was a Seiko quartz caliber made I believe 1989-1991. It has a quartz movement with a 4Hz stepper motor. It also has a hairspring and a vial of viscous liquid that dampens the motion of the second hand, making it a true smooth sweep.

The -7A10 is impossibly rare (I've never seen another since I bought this in August 2015), but other 5S21 models are fairly common.

I don't own a variant, but they use the same movement so the issue of accuracy becomes one of who cased the movement and if it was regulated after casing and prior to delivery to the customer. Also, the the variant with the sapphire crystal will weigh slightly more than the original, and the larger size (42mm) variants will obviously weigh slightly more as well...so which variant were you looking into?

Fwiw, mine has held to +0.5 sec per day if I wear it normally, wind it once a day at the same time, and leave it crown up overnight.

Watches are a lot about delusions of grandeur, he encapsulates that and makes really good videos regardless of whether his backstory is fake, his community is a hugbox, too forgiving on seiko, shill, etc. etc.

Like there are a bunch of good watch youtubers, but the bottom line is that he has the best format and entertainment value.

Other good people:
-Just One More Watch
-Archie Luxury if you have the $ for anything hes talking about
-Frederico talks watches is someone people like a lot, though I hate the way he talks and think hes a faggot
-Theo and Harris, weird fast talking character
-GshockHighfashion if you like gshocks, will torture you with models that are nowhere near worth the $ but you want
-The time teller, jew with a lot of charisma
-Nick shabazz, talks like a 1920s gangster, more of an edc guy overall
-Take time with Patrick Marlett, newer channel, liked that he gave the oceanus spotlight, pointed out that the alpinist is no longer worth it at 500

Also been at my old watchnigger sensei to pressure test some shitters. He's working right now on an old Patek and an Omega F300. Mad jelly I am.

Ah yes, because $10,000 Valjoux 7750s and $7,000 Sellitas are the height of value.

IWC is a pleb catching brand with oversized, colorful designs and marketing designed to appeal to noveau riche normies who know nothing about watches and get them to spend 3-4x what the watches are actually worth.

>Hamilton
Only has a handful of watches that are good values and hundreds of models that aren't, so I don't think the brand as a whole deserves inclusion.

>Omega
I still don't think the price:quality ratio is quite there yet, but I can understand if people would include them since they've finally started improving their external finishing, which even five years ago was laughably, comically bad.

Those, the Intramatic 38mm with an ETA 2892-A2 and the Khaki Field manual wind models with the ETA 2804-2 are the only good value models in the whole range I think.

meh, i've got a relatively expensive ($500ish) fake rolex, and the finishing/QC is fine. it's not perfect, because there's a lot of details to get down correctly with a sub, most of the qc/finishing issues you talk about are about getting small details exactly as the genuine article has them, as opposed to the watch being made out of garbage and not functioning properly. a panerai is about as simple as designs get. the fakes i've seen are very good because of that.

plus most normies have no fucking idea what a panerai is supposed to look like.

I've certainly paid huge premiums from time to time for q dial or case reference that I wanted, even if other references with the same movement are cheaper. I think it's totally legitimate to want one of the pulsometer dial 5s21 references, since they highlight the sweep nature of the second hand - most quartz watches would not have an effective pulsometer scale. Thanks man, I've never bought a decent watch before but I really like that model.
Would you recommend it?

It's just been discontinued recently, so unless you can get it for a decent price (under $400 or so), then probably not.

The sarb discontinuation has left an unfortunate hole in terms of plain, casual watches at the price point.

Your rectangles make absolutely no sense. The hour pips on the dial are most certainly perfectly printed. The case is aligned as well (it's not machined irregularly). What's not aligned is your shitty photography and inability to properly straighten a pic in Photoshop before drawing random boxes. Your boxes don't even hit the same spots on the case.
