Post watches that have better accuracy than a Rolex, better finishing than an Omega and an indicator on the windyknob to help you know when the crown is correctly screwed down to make it water proof. Also, this thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a functioning watch, clock, hourglass or other timepiece.

sup /fa/

I have a cook watch project I am working on (well cool to me). There was a company called "fairchild" in the 1970s that made good quality steel case LCD watches. They became illegal to manufacture and sell because they included so much tritium the government said they would cause cancer. As a result someone just found a shit load of them on a pallet that were never sold. So you can get them for like $50 bucks now new in the box from 1975.

I bought one and I am going to mod it by putting a bunch of modern tritium vials in it. So it will be illuminated 24/7 with the equivalent of an indiglo watch for 20 years.

when i get it do you guys want pics?

ok should i use blue or green?

I don't think you could use a normal casio. I thought you could for awhile and I was actually planning to mod a regular casio to do this but I could not figure out if the tritium would be bright enough or if it was technically possible. This is a photo of the fairchild moment, see how big the tray is for the tritium? it's several mm, a regular casio is not this thick. You would have to somehow remove the normal reflective backing and install a back that would make the movement twice as thick, then mod the case to accept the thick movement.

why did the gvt ban them? The literal reason they are available is because they were banned by the federal government so they just sat in a warehouse for 42 years and now that the original tritium has decayed due to it's half life some guy is selling them. They were the cost adjusted for inflation price of $500 then but they are $35 now. So the case is well made and i think fairchild was bought out by texas instruments but they were a very legit brand of good quality stuff back in the day.

I bet if I bought 20 watches from the guy and got them shipped at once he would sell them to me for $25 a watch. then I could mod them and sell them cheap if enough people care enough to want them

it's the amount, there are rules for how much tritium you can put in a watch. if you get into trit watches you will learn about this, watch makers who use tritium on watch hands always bump up against the limit and they sometimes offer several styles, such as trit hand or trit markers etc.. and what people do is buy one of each watch and combine the parts to make a super trit watch that would be illegal to sell

I don't know, it could be that the amount in each marker is less than you would think by density. Maybe the gvt is just looking the other way or does not actually give as much of a fuck as I think they do about the letter of the law.

What's fancy about a cal 3802? It's an early quartz, but it's not especially adjusted and doesn't feature any unusual technology. It's not even the first watch using CMOS, which was Daini's 36 series.

I'm talking about how early quartz movements tend to be of higher build quality (and more rare) the closer you get to that magical border between 1969 and 1970. 1970 production is already hard to find, 1969 is pretty much unobtanium.

Pic related, the grail of every collector of early Jap quartz watches.

They could have at least put it on a strap of the right size :(

Fair enough. The 3802 is certainly a good movement. I'm just not sure I'd describe it as pretty fancy - it's very basic. At least it's jeweled.

As a collector of early japanese quartz watches, it would definitely be cool to own a 1969 cal 35, although I do prefer collecting movements that work.

The issues with the V7750 have nothing to do with it being an ETA. It's horizontally coupled (meaning the start/stop pusher actuation is jerky and the Chrono second hand tends to jerk forwards upon activation) and the chronograph second hand has some serious stutter issues from being indirectly driven.

Since the other, technically superior, mass production capable mechanical chronograph isn't available anymore, the V7750 is fine at a reasonable price point, but it's only a good enough solution.

Supposedly free sprung is more shock resistant in the sense that a hit can move the regulator... but in such case the problem could be solved with ease; and i dont think it would be a common thing to happen.

Free sprung is more high end but less of a need with the development of better materials (less affected by temperature etc) for the wheel and the coil.

A non issue really if you "only" want a workhorse caliber.

I own this. Pretty ok sorta feels more like a $200 watch in some ways but still like it. This colorway is kinda hard to read the time gotta get used to it. 1/4 main chrono second hand "sweep" is nice for a quartz. 24 hour slaved to main time dial is kinda useless but whatever does not really bother me that much. Feels comfy on the wrist and looks funky. I'd buy it again.

A new oyster 36 is like 5k brand new. Not that much depending on how much you make, but generally it's a stupid investment even fashion wise to spend a months salary (the large majority of people don't make even half of 5k USD a month btw) on a fashion accessory. It's all about perspective, i make roughly 7.2k a month after taxes with over 10 years in my field of employment, but buying a 5k watch is throwing away 70% of my monthly income. That's fucking stupid.

It is good that it has the same font though. Also, and this is really just nitpicking, the hand lengths seem too short for the dial. The hour in particular looks dwarfed in that setup.

But I'm not the one who has to wear it so if you like it that's what matters. I do approve of the NH36. What's your accuracy like?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Black Bay, is in fact, Replica/Black Bay, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, "Shitter".
The genuine Tudor Black Bay is not a bad watch itself, but rather another meme dive watch, Rolex made by put together left-over parts, screws and other components, resulting a full watch defined by very insensitive marketing.
Many watch fuckers wear a replica versions of the Black Bay wristwatch every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the replicas of the Black Bay which is widely worn today are often called “Shitters”, and many of its users are not aware that it basically makes them gay instantly, intensifying their desires to suck cock while wearing their Fake Tudor.
There really are better watches for cheaper, like Seikos, and these people aren't buying those, but it is just a part of their gay nature.
