Agreed, plants that require actual care, like plants that aren't succulents, are the best. Getting a cactus is like admitting from the very beginning that you can't take care of a plant. Bonsai requires a lot of regular care and with good effort you will get something very beautiful that's a testament to your abilities to care for something.

Not just pruning, you're also keeping the plant in a small pot with a growth medium mixed in a certain way. The small pot will limit the tree's growth so that the tree grows very slowly, and the trunk thickens. An important part is also the shaping of the tree often done with wires and string.

that's a Haworthia cooperi hybrid from Japan. The genus of Haworthia has a lot of neat varieties and people breed them for interesting forms. That hybrid is brand-named "OB-1".
Haworthia mostly grow in South Africa so they have really thicc leaves to store lots of water, and some have nice transparent windows in the leaves that look extra cool.

I think this one is a Haworthia springbokvlakensis hybrid, also Japanese. You can start with cheaper but still cool varieties for like 4-5$ online and then buy the fancy ones (30-100$).

I rigged up a vertical garden out of a bunch of spare junk laying around the house. It runs on a fountain pump (it needs a water reservoir because we don't have any spigots around) and supports about 20 plants, mostly herbaceous/edible. I just run the circuit for about 2 hours a day and add a little water each day and it just werks

it's not very pretty but for a complete lark (and about $100, plants included) i think it turned out quite well. i would definitely like to revisit the design in the future

Here's a tip for everyone looking at not just house plants but plants in general:

Not them but I used to watch /plant/ threads every day. Most of them are a bunch of nerds masturbating over carnivorous plants. I mean they are cool but almost all discussion and images revolve around sarracenias, dioneas and nephentes, it gets boring as fuck.

Also, some of them are pretty good at this "hobby" and are intolerant towards new people who fuck over easy-to-care plants.
Come on, it's a fucking human being and most tutorials just say "water it often, but not too much" which is like trying to learn how to cook from my grandma; generic and ambiguous tips that dont help at all.
You fuck up giving it too much water once and you lose an entire year of growth or all the plant altogether.

Anyways, this thread is full of curious people, motivated and inspired, so is comfy as fuck

Thoughts on weeping ficus fig trees? I work at a grocery store that got some nice looking ones in, and the last tree i got from here is still doing quite nice.

I feel like every house I went to in the early 2000s had an artificial one. I personally like alli or audrey ficus better.

The other side, my bedroom is decently sized. It's a old warehouse with shipping container extension. It needs a lot of work but it's getting there.
