Philippe Dufour wears a Lange Datograph (pic rel.)

I'm fairly sure that should be construed as an implicit critique of Swiss watchmakers. Dufour often goes out of his way to say good things about ALS, Credor and even Nomos, but almost never about other Swiss makers that aren't independents.

I'm still working on trying to confirm that these cases write being done on Sallaz polishing machines in the pre-quartz period. Those machines made in Germany in the 1950s are what Grand Seiko uses for 'zaratsu' polishing today). They use a rotating tin disc with polishing compound applied to it and the cases are placed in frames to help the polisher guide them against the spinning disc to try and achieve a perfectly flat mirrored surface with no optical distortion and crisp case edges.

The only two possibilities are that Seiko was using those same types of machines in the 1960-1975 period, or that they were strictly manually polishing the KS and GS cases, because you cannot achieve their finishing using buffing wheels.

This is an interesting conversation, but I kinda agree with you. I myself own a few watches that I shouldn't really afford (a brand new speedy sandwich being the nicest), but my watches were basically gifts from my well-off parents. I bought the speedy from money I have from them, same with a seamaster diver I had, and a couple other expensive watches are gifts from them. All the other watches which I bought myself from my own money have been under $700. My salary is around 45k a year, and I have a mortgage that is going very well. Well it seems I finally found a confirmation that Seiko imported the Sallaz polishing machines in the 1950s and that they were Sallaz polishing ('zaratsu' is the Japanese translation of Sallaz) in the 1960s. I'd never been sure that they did the historical cases using the same approach as the modern ones until now.

https://www.grand-seiko.com/uk-en/special/9f9s9stories/vol2/2/

>In the 1950’s, the Hayashi Seiki facility which manufactures many of the Grand Seiko watch cases began using a polishing machine that had the words GEBR.SALLAZ engraved on it. GEBR. is an abbreviation of the German word for “brothers” and SALLAZ (pronounced in the German fashion as “zaratsu” in Japan) was the family name of the company that built it. The main feature of this polishing machine is that the front of the rotating disc, not the side, is used to polish surfaces. In Japan, this process came to be known as Zaratsu polishing. The Grand Seiko Style, with its highly polished, clearly defined ridges where plane meets plane, is only achievable through use of this machine and its successors and the expert skills of the craftsmen who mastered its application.

A running chronograph can decrease the amplitude on a balance, which can in turn change how the watch responds to positional variance and can in turn affect the mean daily rate. In practice, if you're not running the chronograph all day, it shouldn't make a big difference.

Erika's Originals offers more color choices and a thinner strap, but the new parachute webbing they are made out of isn't as stretchy as the old stock MN stuff, and her strap designs is, in my opinion, less comfortable than the thicker NDC Straps design.

That said, the NDC Strap only comes in olive and would not be a great aesthetic match for that watch.

I think it is a 2824, I’m a fan all the hardware is rolex made but I can get it serviced at anywhere that does etas. Its not necessarily a dive style watch, its more in keeping with the classic explorer style, the snowflake hands are I guess and tudor messed up calling it a black bay. As a wristlet I don’t really care. Its reliable luxurious and quite beautiful. I also have a speedmaster 38, but the quality is abysmal, it requires constant servicing, and the bracelet is very hard to keep clean. Maybe I’m not a watch purist but with money to spend I’d rather have these peices that always draw compliments and get me good services at boutiques rather than a random soviet peice of crap or japanese knock off. That being said might get a Nomos weltzeit, a yachtmaster, or a calatrava next, thoughts?
