Same Anon as the DMC5 jacket in the other thread. Here's probably my favorite of my casual jackets, though I've lost weight since the photo was taken a few years back. Still fits well, but it's now a little less sculpted (as the leather has softened up). Thanks again to everyone for their thoughts in the other thread...I'm still learning, but I think I've finally figured out why the palettes for that jacket are always going to be in the grey/black/white area, but I'll post reasons in that thread when I've narrowed them down.

Look forward to seeing other jackets here.

It was done by a company that is no longer in operation many years ago, and it was constructed custom to my measurements (hence why it fits so well). This is the issue I mentioned in the other thread that is so damned important about leather...it has to fit well, or else it looks not great.

I have no care routine except to hang it on hangers that have shoulders (so, not wire hangers but ones you'd use for suits), and that's it. It's seen rain, and it's seen cigar and pipe smoke, and it's gone through everything from being stuffed in an overhead compartment on an overnight flight to being crushed in my luggage on the way back.

Basically, wear it. Pecards is good, but in truth I've never had to even buy a bucket because nearly all new leather jackets you buy today are already well oiled. The only time you need Pecards is it you live in desert conditions, or if you are buying a second hand jacket that is in need of tender loving care. The natural oils in your skin and sweat will oil the jacket, so unless you remove the oils by washing it in a machine or something, your jacket will not need a Pecards treatment for probably a decade or so (and that's if you use it on a motorcycle year in/year out).

>> No.13460931

>>13460906
I don't think you can. Depending on the type of leather, it'll wrinkle with time and exposure to water according to the grain. If this is your jacket, I'd say keep it as is, and wear the hell out of it. A double rider jacket with this kind of age/wear is something that is rather special, especially if it's all original.

But that's the catch with leather. It ages with wear, and how it ages is dependent upon the leather used, who's wearing it, and what the purpose of wearing it might be. However, you'll never get it to a smoothness that you'll see for instance in new lambskin.

It looks good man. There is no trick to smoothing out used leather, but don't think of it as 'used-up', as if somehow the usefulness or function of the leather is now gone. Your jacket is probably very comfortable, very soft to the touch, and more like a fabric than it is a skin. That's something that takes years to accomplish if you buy a leather jacket new, and depending on the skin, it can take even longer.

If you buy a new leather jacket, you will definitely get the uniformity of skin that you're looking for...but it'll be a little stiff depending on the hide and the manufacturer. If I were you, I'd wear that one proudly.

In all honesty, it looks more like an 80's leather jacket, in terms of design, placement of buttons and shit, etc. It's probably been relined (from what I can see of the lining) too. For a jacket that is 'double-breasted' like this one, no matter what you need a rather thin frame for it to work (like double-breasted suits)....if you wear it open, there's a shittonne of material flapping around, which definitely worked in the 80s when excess was everything, but now it just looks sloppy (unless you find a way to counteract it...maybe skinny jeans or something).

Don't worry about arms; you can always go custom with the major jacket companies regarding this. If you buy from Schott, Aero, or any of the other major manufacturers you should be able to customize the sleeve length; Aero in particular makes very good aviator and flying jackets.

Don't worry Anon...there always possibilities. You just have to save a bit more...

Interesting about the lining, but now that it's known to be Italian, then it all makes sense. If this jacket has sleeves that are too short for you, the only thing you can really do is wear it open, and off the shoulder. You could probably get away with buttoning up the bottom waist area, but if the upper neck and shoulder are left open you could give the illusion that the sleeves are longer than they are. >> No.13465500

>My antiqued Fight Club is coming :p

FUCK YEAH!

I've heard really good things about that one too; it's slimmer and less stocky than the original JAL, and with the antiqued leather you don't have to do much to it for it to 'fit in'. It's still a tough one though in my view to pair with stuff, or perhaps I should say, it's a 'challenge'. But if you already have the 70's aesthetic going, then it'll just be another colour combination....the 70's thing just doesn't work on me, yet.

Do you have any guilt about having a potential 'double' in your wardrobe? As in, do you think you'll truly wear it a lot, or do you think one of the two jackets will eventually end up as 'the option' for 'the primary'?

It's funny about the Dante...over in the other thread, people are having conniption fits over it, and it comes in waves....it's like, I think it's over, and then like the tides another Anon says the same thing an Anon said days ago, and the whole thing repeats.

My suede jacket - sorry for the bad lighting

>> No.13465530

>>13465508
Of course, there are minor differences, but in terms of what the jacket does, that's where I'd personally have difficulty.

In other words, they have several things in common: size, drape, and closure. The details within all of this of course make these different jackets, but the for a man on a galloping horse, it's the same jacket in a different colour.

In other words, my concern was because if you have, say, a Heist jacket and a cafe racer, you have two very different aesthetics that appeal to different design lines. But with the Heist and Fight club, you have simply a 'variation on a theme' of thigh length 70's car-coat. It's not a criticism at all, it's simply what would concern me if I had one of each in the closet. Beyond the colour, I'd most likely fall into the situation where one jacket gets used a lot, and the other would be the one that comes out when I need a change of pace but still want the same basic lines. Does that make sense?

That's why I asked if you have ever had that situation. I have a double which I don't like having at all currently....two cafe racers that, although I love them both, they are in many ways redundant. One brown, one black. One with vertical stripes, one with horizontal. One with raglan sleeves, one with normal yoke etc. But sadly, one gets worn a hell of a lot, and the other one is the 'when I need a change'.

It's tough having lots of jackets...and I'm starting to understand why people downsize their collection after a few years.

>>13465629
Get fit, and make sure that the jacket you buy fits you well.

There are lots of general problems with the common man buying a leather jacket, and what they don't realize is that unlike synthetics, leather really doesn't look good if it's the wrong size or shape, or if the body underneath it is the wrong size or shape. It's unforgiving, in other words.

To make matters worse, people tend to buy their first leather jacket either from a department store off-the-rack, or from a place that 'specializes' in leather....in either case, they're not buying custom in terms of sizing. The assumption being that a small failure in sizing will not be noticeable because 'it's a leather jacket'.

>>13465671 is right about not being obese, but it's more than that. Obesity is the first element to conquer, and then after that, you have to find a design that benefits your figure and doesn't make fun of it, then order one and custom size it to your proportions (usually the sleeves need tailoring, and in some cases, the bottom of the jacket as well). Then of course there are other elements to consider: what goes with the jacket, and how that fits into your general style.

Finally, the jacket should be an extension of your personality. You wear the jacket, the jacket doesn't wear you. Does that make sense?

>> No.13465702

>>13465629
One last thing: sometimes there are iconic designs that simply will not work for your body type or height. This is something which we all must accept, but especially when it comes to leather. With synthetics, we can stretch the limit, but leather just doesn't budge on this. If our body doesn't look good wearing double-breasted suits, for instance, it's unlikely we'll look good in a leather pea-coat or leather military jacket. If you're super-thin, you can wear just about anything and it'll look good (although A-2s tend to look odd on really thin people because you simply get two sticks for their legs coming out of a bulgy pillowcase)....but if you're round, or fat, or chubby, then you have to think of what frames your body well, what frames your face well, and what helps you rather than hurts you in terms of silhouette (because leather jacket silhouettes tend to be very sharp).

Finally, you have to understand the historical design lines behind the jacket in order to know quickly what fit is ideal and what goes with it. Obviously it's possible to diversify the look according to modern fashion trends, but you really should know what the jacket was built for originally in order to know what you're going away from or rebelling against.

For fashion: the jacket needs to be tight and cropped, it should be tight enough that it can’t be zippered or that it’s a real fucking struggle to zipper. The jacket should end at your belt. It should show your entire ass.

I think it's two-fold; expense, of course, but also because leather jackets in today's world are seen as 1 item in a wardrobe, not 5 or 6. So, most people either don't have one, or have one that fits badly. There's no reason to discuss it because the wardrobe conforms to the jacket, not the other way around like shoes or shirts.

If you have one jacket, how much can you discuss? If you're looking for a jacket, I can understand that...this thread would be exceedingly useful for people who want to buy a leather jacket but have no idea where to begin. But beyond this...it'll be rather quiet, I think.

>>13469508
It looks okay...the question is, how does it look on you? If the cuffs end at the right place, if the shoulders are perfect and not wide or too narrow, if the waist is not bunched but not billowy....that sort of thing is the only thing that matters.

>>13469611
Disagree. Tom Cruise proves that daily.

Anyone know a decent cheap asymmetric leather jacket under about 150 or 200? Something like this but not fucking H&M.

You can find them, but either you go vintage (and beat up) or if new then they will be made of fake leather.

If you're just trying the style out, then go with fake leather from any number of brands...but if you're looking to own it for the long haul, save up. Fake leather gives you far more problems than it's worth, especially once it starts shredding....

Soul revolver jackets can be purchased in cowhide variants as opposed to lamb Napa. I suggest you check out some of their options.

You guys think a pair of black dr martens 1460 would go well with this jacket?

>> No.13476943

What's a reasonable price point for a decent jacket? I've seen a Diesel one I like and its currently going for around £700.
Is it best if I save up for this one rather than skimping out on one that's £150 ish?

>> No.13477113

>>13476943
I wouldn’t pay over 500 but that’s me personally. ALWAYS go for the higher quality piece. Think of that 700 as an investment brother. In terms of leather you can’t skimp.

Here’s a nice starter piece for you. Hides are heavy and quality is very good, not premium tier like Aero but a great starter piece.

Incidentally, I forgot to ask. What made you decide to go with the Thermal Lining? Is it to facilitate wearing fewer layers underneath, or perhaps to increase the potential for use in spring/fall?

>>13477285
Yeah....it's actually a bit of a bummer. There was a fellow asking about budget jackets in a Perfecto style, and I thought I'd given him some useful advice...but I have no idea how he made out. Maybe someone hijacked the thread to a point of no return...I'm thinking of making a new one though...we'll see. But I'll have to take a few more pics first....
