So I got a sample of Invasion Barbare today, and it's what I've been looking for in a fougere. While I like Rive Gauche, I don't find it anywhere nearly as beautiful as the MDCI. While it carries a hefty ass price, I'm starting to consider buying this God-tier fougere.

Oldfag here. I can't recall my first fragrance, but in high school I had Polo Sport, Hugo by Hugo Boss (the canteen shaped flacon), Cool Water, and New West. I also grabbed Acqua di Gio and Gucci Rush when they were new releases.

I actually wore a bit of AdG (from a 2015 bottle) over the weekend and have to admit that it hasn't been (((reformulated))) as badly as many other 90's classics. The recent version is still a very pleasant aquatic with real presence and 6 hour longevity.

Here's the bottle of Fierce I found yesterday. I must've peeled the Chad sticker off when I was like 14 (I'm 25 now) and this bottle is either from 2005 or 2007.

I did a full wearing today, 5 sprays. All the top notes have pretty much faded .It opens with a blast of alcohol, then we get that Curve DNA with the citruses and t0000by (idk how else to explain it) smelling pineapple and fruits. After 5 minutes literally all of that drops off and it's just Iso E Super and ambroxan for hours and hours. It smells like heaven. I'm pissed the bottle is only 30 mL because I could wear this every day.

FOR THE LAST TIME:

EDPs are the strongest in terms of projection. High alcohol content, higher perfume conc than EDTs. Big projection ala the 1970s for when it was invented.

(Pure) Parfum/Extrait: Highest perfume materials conc, low alcohol content. Big on longevity, low on projection as no alcohol as a carrier to evaporate with the scent. Stays close to skin for a long time.

EDT: Invented to evoke the glamour of Extraits without paying the price. Also invented to avoid being included in higher luxury customs tax on parfum. Lower on perfume concentration and alcohol (but higher than parfum) projects decently but poor longevity.

EDC: Up to recently referred to a particular style of perfumery, like Florida Water and Carmelite Water. Traditionally meant citrus and bouquet de Provence. Now used to refer to perfumes in light, low concentrations, lighter than EDTs in terms of both longevity and projection. Traditionally in splash bottles to allow for liberal application, and more often than not variants in EDCs include refreshing citrus notes.

Everyone posting on /frag/ should get this right by now.

"As the 1980s rolled their weird mix of consumerism, carnality, frantic social climbing and political conservatism, fragrances became more and more agressive, a form of olfactory shoulder pads. Thus the idea of a stronger concentration that would introduce the wearer before they even entered the room was born: Eau de Parfum (EDP). Typically 15% (and fluctuating between 10-20% of aromatic compounds), this is a concentration that lasts a long time and is very perceptible in terms of "waft". For those who were of the "bang for the buck" school of thought it also made perfect economic sense, being the best of both worlds."

DIY perfumer here. You can literally test this out at any department store today.

Usually eau de parfum lasts longer than an sdt. Reason being that even though it has a large % alcohol content it also has a higher concrete content than eau de toilette.

The issue of projection: it's widely known that EDPs are the powerhouses and not EDTs. Again if you don't believe me just go to any department store and try two concentrations of the same frag.

There are exceptions to the rule. But I bought Tam Dao a couple of years ago and settled on the EDP because I (thought then) it had a longer staying power and projection (don't see the point of mute frags) and also because it's rounder and richer than the edt imo. There isn't a terrible difference between the 2 but the main selling point to me was the sillage and longevity over the edt so idk why you think the edt lasts longer.

It's not nuclear physics, anon. An EDP simply has a higher % of perfume oils/concrete vs EDTs. This makes the longevity longer. Now, even if the alcohol content were similar to the EDT, you'd get a stronger projection AND longer lasting fragrance. Try wrap your head around that, you little brainlet.

I have a preference for fresher fragrances, but that's more because I find warmer fragrances too heavy/cloying in the fairly mild climate where I live, rather than any love of citrus. My preference leans more towards green, fresh-spicy and light woody notes. I prefer scent that are light and airy, which usually entails fresher scents. However if a fragrance has a strong citrus component then for me it really needs to be a "modern" citrus that smells like the juice of the citrus (ie the lime in L'eau Boisee). Classic citrus notes that smell like citrus zest just remind me too much of cleaning product.

The differences are definitely minimal though, I didn't think the EdP quite justified the extra $60.

I'd be careful with the CdGs. I own a decant of Blue Santal and I've spent a while figuring it out. One moment it smells like a generic drugstore fragrance then the next wear I'm really happy with it. It's still really linear. It just smells like fresh cool pine. I still don't reach for it a lot.

Even though the packaging/advertising is blue, there's nothing aquatic about it. The coolness in the fragrance is more like ice/menthol than watery notes. I'd get a decant/sample of the blue series first and see how you like it. They're good intro to niche fragrances, but not a blind buy.

If you're looking for Spring/Summer FB go with one of the favourites: TdH Eau Tres Fraiche (watery fresh oranges, good performance), if you're looking for wood + citrus go Encre Noire Sport (can be had cheap). The list can go on and on, I don't know how you came up with your list because there's hundreds of fragrances that fit fresh, aquatic citrus out there.

Aye lads I need something new for summer and autumn, I'm a small guy 177/ 51 long-ish blonde hair and really pale skin, always dressed in black.
Yesterday I smelled few fragrances, whats your take on them ? Any other sugestions ?
CDG nomad tea - thought it's too sweet for summer and wouldn't mind it in fall/winter.
CDG calamus - seemed nice but maybe it's very too non-invasive.
CDG amazigreen - Nice, but maybe too manly ? And maybe it's only me but it was really easy to smell it on my skin, which might be annyoing to wear everyday.
Aqua di parma Ginepro di Sardegna- It was nice, seems like it would be great for summer but idk about the rest of the year.
Imaginary authors Every storm a serenade - It was fresh but maybe a bit too musculine and old mannish for me.
Help me /frag/ suggest other things I should smell and help me chose from those I posted,

Was hyped as fuck because everyone says it smells like Creed aventus. I dont know creed aventus smell but heard it was good and now I finally go the aventus clone and tried it and it smells like some heavy scent of green plants like weed or something and heavy lemon peeling, very stingy smell even the dry down

I think CDNI lacks the velvione in aventus, also people that lamented about the oakmoss have a point. However, ever since the 70's for whatever reason it became fashionable to substitute oakmoss with increasing amounts of evernyl (which had been around for ages) and oakmoss terpin to mimic the absolute, so although the EU regs have definitely impacted the use of unadulterated mosses, for the most part it was only used in tiny amounts and becoming slowly substituted, whether for increasing "concern" or just wanting more profit.

I don't know why you can't accept that the previous posts are legitimate definitions of EDPs and EDTs. I'll say it again, if you have a problem understanding what these concentrations mean and what effect they have on longevity and sillage then you have a problem and have no reason to be talking about fragrance.

Amberwood has shifted more toward the wood, and the incense feels even sharper than before. It strikes me as more serious than the EdP, which I viewed as the party boy of the Bleu duo.

What's impressed me is this stuff's presence - as it has warmed on my body it has created a palpable cloud of Bleu around me. I would read reddit user acleverpseudonym’s posts because he is a perfumer if you want to learn the more technical side of fragrance. A lot of online knowledge is false. Better way to look at Cologne, EDT, EDP, Parfum is to think about the same musical piece being arranged differently. Acoustic vs orchestra etc. The goal is not to limit the oil% but more so convey a different feeling of the fragrance. Also lasting power is due to chemicals and how substantive they are. Projection is also due to the choice of chemicals the perfumer chooses to put into the fragrance. If you look at the historical use of parfum, it was more for fancy dinners and the scents are richer but more subdued (less loud and projecting).

It smells like a lesser quality version of Aventus, which in all fairness is exactly what it is. CDNI is to Aventus what RC Cola is to Coke. Yeah, they taste similar, but no one is going to mistake one for the other. Honestly most of what sets Aventus and other Creeds apart is the quality of the ingredients as opposed to the actual scent profile. It's the reason they can get away with so much batch variation. Yeah, early batches of Aventus smell smokier while recent batches smell fruitier, but both smell super fucking high end. You're not going to get the same with a clone. You'll most likely have better luck with a designer frag that smells different than Aventus but still amazing in it's own right instead of a cheap imitation.

Armaf actually makes a GIT clone. It's called Tres Nuit or something or something like that. I think the greenness he's smelling is the birch and patchouli mixing with the citrus notes. I can easily see how a casual fragrance buyer could make that mistake.

I already made a club de nuit post but

Does club the nuit counterfeiter exist? what is it supposed to smell like? I have a good nose but I have hard to know which smells like this and that. club the nuit feels so strong and it has a smell of strong stingy burnt wood that reminds me of cat pee or something, they say it has a strong citrus smell, but i have other citrus fragrances that doesnt smell like this, this one smell like the the bitter juice in the peeling, I mean maybe everyone like different smell. But im scared to wear, i wanna impress girls but if its counterfeiter Im scaed they will think I smell as horrible as I preserve the smell
I paid good money for this and Im poor, Im trying to resell it but if no one buys it Im forced to like it, Im just scared its a cheap chinese fake and the more i think of it the worse it smells

I mean, I guess anything is possible, but counterfeiting CDNI sounds like more trouble than it's worth given how inexpensive it already is. The profit margin would be so slim that they'd be better off counterfeiting designer frags. The notes you listed sound basically like a negative perception of CDNI. The opening is extremely harsh and synthetic smelling, with lemon being the loudest note. The burnt wood smell sounds like the birch note that's prominent in the dry down. I doubt it's fake, I think it's more likely that it just doesn't agree with you. Where'd you cop it from? Do you have a picture of the bottle?

looks legit to me, it's probably just not for you. The original Aventus is a very smoky, woody dry and musky fragrance as well, it just has a strong pineapple apple opening instead of the lemon-pineapple opening in CDNIM. I think I'll wear CDNIM today honestly, one of my coworkers who is a hot girl said Aventus is a pussy magnet

>> No.13361645

>>13361523
Looks legit to me. The box is right and it's a very distinctive texture. If it's a fake it's a damn good one. The atomizer should be either black (French version) or silver (dubai version) and have the armaf logo etched on top. The bottle is complex enough that it would take a lot of effort to copy on a fragrance that already sells for as low as $20 from legit sellers.

In my opinion it's just a really overrated fragrance. I've worn it out dozens of times and never received a compliment, even from people who are usually quick to compliment my cologne. I think a lot of the hype just comes from people who can't afford Aventus and desperately want to believe they found an affordable alternative. I've never owned Aventus myself, but I live ten minutes from the Creed Boutique and have smelled it many times. I can confidently say while the two are definitely playing the same sport, they're not at all in the same ballpark.

Granted, you still might want to hold onto it even if you don't plan on wearing it. I've heard from several places that Armaf is getting out of the fragrance game. If and when that happens, the price for this will go way way up given how popular it is, which will come in handy when you decide to sell it.

>> No.13361670

>>13361523
also, if you still really want an Aventus clone, Redolessence said Poseidon's Elixer from Dua Fragrances smells virtually indistinguishable from the real thing when he smelled them side by side, and he's an Aventus fanboy to an absurd degree having gone through three different bottles of it. Looks like it's sold out on the official website, but it shouldn't be too hard to find from a reputable seller as it's still pretty new.

It might also be worth it to order an Aventus sample just to see if you actually even like it. I believe you can get them from the creed boutique site for around $30, which I know is extravagant for a lot for a sample, but it might be better than dropping a ton of money on another clone only to find out that you don't actually like the scent itself. Aventus is the most hyped scent in the frag community, but that doesn't necessarily mean every single person is going to love it. I've seen plenty of review videos where people ask their non fraghead co-workers and friends to smell it and they don't like it.

As far I remember, they don't have Amouage samples, but Dia is one of the best masculine floral scents imo, have a look; David Jourquin is all about leather so avoid it if you are not a fan.
Nasomatto is one of the top 3 brands for me, and samples are hard to find, maybe try China White.
Pierre Guillaume has too much fragrance to make an educated guess and I didn't like anything I tried.
Laboratorio Olfattivo and Phaedon are decent brands and full bottle prices are not that expensive. Personally, I like Cozumel, Nerotic (this one with leather), Kashnoir, Ilanguara.
MDCI, despite my dislike of Invasion Barbare, has an amazing Cuir Garamante (again, leather).
Also, they had pre-made floral sample box in April and it's still possible to buy it.

Have a look at each of the brand fragrantica page, maybe something will catch your eye.

Quick thoughts on Zara Gold (curved / new bottle) - to me this clearly evokes Byredo Oud Immortel, though it's more likely aiming for Paco Rabanne Pure XS, which I haven't smelled but is allegedly similar. The citrus top note is very assertive, almost as distinct and sweet as Oud Immortel's limoncello. In place of sticky Oud there is a praline note in the heart. Although it's a sweet scent, it's not saccharine or choking. Nor does it feel cheap or thin. I had to A-B sniff Gold against the Byredo to get my bearings while testing the Zara out. Jerememe said Gold reminds him of a young man's Aventus, which I don't necessarily agree with, but I've also heard OI compared to Aventus. Maybe there's something common to their composition that makes people connect the Pure XS and Aventus families.

Overall not bad for ~$25 and a happy blind buy. Longevity on this one should be overnight as I couldn't fully wash it of my hands while testing it out last night.
