I really like it, just got it about half a week ago from Yahoo Japan Auctions. I find that buying from a Japanese site tends to give better prices and better condition, although there isn't the same number of postings as Ebay.

Including shipping, handling, and a new lizard strap the watch cost about $500CAD.

If you want a 45KS I really recommend looking for one that has the original KS buckle, mine was missing the buckle and now I'm trying to find one at a reasonable price, the buckles themselves go for over $100.

A digital Casio and a Presage are both weeb watches, everyone knows that. They're nice watches for sure and you should be happy wearing them, but that doesn't change their weeb status.

As for changing my recommendation, if the Casio was to be your only watch the first one you posted would be a safer choice in the long run. However since you have the Presage, you should get the F-91W since it's a bit more 'fun'

They're generally much better looking and respected than the Casios and Seikos posted here (which are fine watches to be sure, but not necessarily esteemed by comparison).

They might be better looking if not to beat up, but the movements definitely degrade and that makes it a lot likelier for you to need help from horologists, which charge quite a bit. Besides, Seikos don't look half bad and are most definitely not "nouveau riche". You are thinking of Rolex here. Seikos are not pretentious but still have decent finishing and quality. Casios are simply cheap watches that don't pretend otherwise. The models I am interested in look retro and cool in a somewhat sleazy way. I also prefer to have a couple decent and cheap watches and later save for a new JLC Reverso, than to have a bunch of vintage pieces, that, lets face it, don't feel as satisfying as a brand new piece from a high-end manufacturing house.

>let's face it, don't feel as satisfying as a brand new piece from a high-end manufacturer

Let's not. I don't mean to be rude, but please don't pretend that that is anything beyond a (perfectly fine) subjective statement. If you think that a well-build middle of the road timepiece gives you the most satisfaction for your dollar, then by all means go for it, but you should also just keep in mind that Casio and Seiko are by no means "high-end manufacturing houses," assuming that's who you were referring to. Strictly speaking, patek philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Breguet, Audemars, are the definitive high-end brands. Underneath that you have your Omegas, Breitlings, etc. Then you have your Tissots, Seikos, and finally Casios. The reason these rankings and prices matter is because they represent (generally) the level of intricacy and care involved in the craftsmanship. A handmade dual-tourbillon movement simply takes more time and, ultimately, displays a much higher level of engineering involved: watchmakers do it just to do it, which is the main point. You brought up movement degradation of old watches: well, it happens, but is fixable (even by yourself) and, more importantly, happens way less in high-end pieces. I have a rolex from 1942 that I consistently wear and it runs like a dream. Lastly, the primary purpose of a watch, counterintuitively, isn't to tell the time: it's male jewelry. That's what it does. It makes your wrist pleasant to look at. So the argument that its better to have a well-made $200 than an older, more aesthetic, and more respected time piece only makes sense if you're just using it to tell the time rather than have it ogled and admired (which, again, is why men pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a gaudy diamond encrusted hublot or a more modest though equally expensive patek) Time is an illusion, anon, but class isn't

Thank you for being the one sane person in this circle jerk of shitty japanese watches that are for some reason now being called "timepieces".

I might add to the discussions that while I agree with you that having 1000 + € in your wrist is definitely beyond telling time, I still feel like some of the more expensive watches can be bought for the sake of their trustworthy mechanics if you are outdoorsy in a bit extreme way. There are occassions when having the knowledge of sunset or tides is crucial and you might get seriously fucked in the ass if your watch dies.

Obviously this has nothing to do with the people in this thread but fuck if I'm going to find a camp site and pitch it ever in the dark again because my iphone died - but equally fuck if I'm going to get a jap watch, so for now I'm waiting for that bigger paycheck to get an explorer or a seamaster (prolly semaster because it has the date too).

Most people would agree with the statement though. Ask anyone if they would rather have 2 reliable, decent, cheap, Japanese watches and then save up for a brand new timepiece from a more respected Swiss house, or if they would rather have a bunch of vintage pieces. I am sure most people would say they prefer the first course of action. Don’t get me wrong, collecting vintage is cool and I hope to do it one day, but vintage watches are in no way a replacement for new expensive timepieces.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't arguing that one approach is necessarily better than the other. I'm just saying that you're going to be hardpressed to find someone smitten with your Casio, whereas it may be very plausible that someone will admire-from-a-distance your 1986 Breitling that you won in a bidding war on eBay. As for your last sentence: I politely disagree. I think any one watch is a replacement for any other, strictly speaking. They all serve more or less the same function (which, just to restate, is totally aesthetic accessorization and not temporal information), but within that you have many different context uses (swimsuit vs. tuxedo). It's all up to you, but make sure to understand that while you won't be denigrated for wearing an affordable new timepiece, you probably won't be praised either.

And a new Honda will outperform any old Rolls-Royce from the 1970s. What are we talking about again?

And oh yeah: if by "outperform" you mean "will simply last longer without breaking," then you're plainly wrong and clearly never owned (or known someone who's owned) anything above $10k. Don't forget: the Swiss are the fucking Japanese of Europe. Source: I am one (which is why you're misshapen opinions and values on the matter are so painfully cringeworthy).

Anyway, have fun reliably telling the time convincing yourself that everyone else's watches are, to be sure, barely functioning and just for show.

I don't know what vitriol everyone else is on, but I'm the guy you're replying to.

To clarify: that was a tongue-in-cheek point. Obviously class is a cultural construct. And obviously time is illusory. That doesn't mean that they aren't "real things." We can get into the epistemological underpinning of reality if you want, but the point is that just because something was artificially erected by humans doesn't mean they don't matter. Class, whether you want to convince yourself otherwise, matters. I grew up in an upper-class home and, as much as I hate to say it, people in the upper-class are by far (I really can't stress this enough) the most class conscious group of people you'll find. It's rarely verbalized but always lurking. Unfortunately, a lot of people pay attention to small details like what watch you bothered you buy and put on your wrist. It's an advertisement. An "illusion" with physical consequences. Don't get yourself twisted, anon.

Perhaps “nobody” will be smitten with a cheapo Casio, but I still enjoy the retro look at a low price, it can still complement an outfit nicely. However, I’d say that a Seiko presage will get some looks, and that’s still a new watch, at about $500, with good finishing and machinery. Hell, I’ve been complimented on Fossils (one was a gift, the other was a purchase from a time I knew jack about watches). The average normie is easily impressed

Big Zeros are late productions. You shouldn't expect great fit and finish from a Soviet product made in the 80s or 90s! Still, I personally find them much more interesting than the products of more obvious countries. My collection spans the whole postwar Soviet period and you can see the state of the society in the little details in cases and movements, like the abandonment of geneva striping in the 70s and the disappearance of bevelled bridges in the 80s and 90s. They're neat pieces of history.

Vostok has seriously cleaned up their act on the last 10 years. Buy from Meranom in confidence.

Worst being the vostok 2214, but I think that was a bad example of those movements.

Again, $150 was the lower-limit, and a very roughly estimated one at that, not the target price. I didn't think I would have to explain this, but that means that of the watches I listed *most* will fall within the limits of $150 and $1500—some will be close to the lower end, some to the upper. It does *not* mean that the majority lie below $200. That's how ranges work.

As for the auctions, you're probably right. The ones I listed all end in less than a day, but considering eBayers' strategies, the bulk of the bidding happens in the waning hours. The point, though, was that watches exist near the lower limit. Shitty ones sell for even less

I've had this watch for the past 2 years, haven't changed the battery even once, and still running like a charm. Also, I wore this watch for my 2months SE-asia backpacking trip. It has been in many different rough environments, from humid jungles to the Indian Himalayas, it has withstood some serious hits during these past two years but still looks good and works like a charm.

Another great memory about this watch was when I was in Tokyo, drinking in a small izakaya and 3 older japanese businessmen sat next to us. One of them started a conversation and told us that he has been around the world a lot (always on business), when I asked where he worked, he replied "you know Casio?", I put up a grin and said "maybe....look at this". Upon seeing my watch his eyes lit up and we kept conversating for the whole evening. His group left before us and we said goodbyes. When we were leaving and asked for the bill, the owner said that "those businessmen paid for you". I wonder was it because of this watch or my personality?

Many people also have reacted to this watch by saying "wow, you have a golden watch?" and I've not felt the need to correct them.

Anyways, after these two years, I feel very glad that I spent 50e on this piece. If you are considering whether to buy a watch like this or not, please take these experiences of mine into account and do the purchase.

Sincerely,
A Casio Man

Anyways, I got an Explorer as a graduation gift and I love it. I would highly recommend it as a simple everyday watch. I like Grand Seiko but it sounds like you could use a sportier model which isn't really a GS specialty. Moonwatch is a good safe bet I guess and fits your criteria, but if you want something more out there then how about a spring drive Tuna or Marinemaster 300? Thanks for the recommendations. Can’t imagine why it matters but none of my watches are particularly expensive.

I’ve been offered a generous signing bonus which of course means I’ll buy a new watch. I appreciate the recommendations. I like the Explorer but feel it fills a similar role to my Datejust. If it was my first real luxury watch, I’d probably buy one for its versatility alone.

I’m really not a fan of the higher end Seiko divers. To me, their proportions are just strange and unappealing. I know this isn’t a common opinion and wish I understood the following.

Tudor is an interesting thought as well. I’ve looked at them pretty seriously but wonder if I would be upset I hadn’t just spent more money and bought a Rolex. I like the Black Bay but it’s a hard sell when I could buy a sub. A lot more money but I’ve found that compromising only means I spend more money later.

I actually ended up deciding on a waffle strap. I think it looks nice, I was between that or an isofrane style one but the waffle is a Seiko classic. Also ordered a few natos because why not, the 300m has lugs that I can fit nato straps and they're cheap and fun.

I think the bb58 will go up in price in the near future. It's already an iconic watch and they won't offer it forever.

I would buy 2 bb58 in your position on box fresh and one to wear.

Are they ? The only I can think of is JCL Mystérieuse. Otherwise I'd just get a new master or other understated one if I had the money and the interest. More into looking for an used explorer 1 or aqua terra.

That aside my argument stands. There are plenty of nice vintage dress watches, even if you only look for swiss. Omega being a prime example.
