I've had it long / medium for most of lifetime, short, buzzed, dreadlocked and still have no idea what's best for me.

Go and wash your hair every 3 day,use a wavy hair dedicated shampoo and wash it thoroughly.
You should let your hair dry naturally,after you get out of the bathroom put a towel on your head (doesn't matter how) after around 30 minutes change the towel.
After another 30 minutes pass take off the changed towel and put your hair in a pony tail,keep it that way for several hours.
This will give you a healthy hair with volume and you will also keep the wavy look.

Depends what mousse you use. The mousse isn't mandatory, it's mainly to make your hair look thicker. Just buy one that doesn't have a lot of hold. It should say so in the package.
For extra volume use the mousse on semi-wet hair and dry it with a hairdryer and comb it a bit. It all really depends what type and length hair you have.
