I believe in a social government (subsidized healthcare, schools, etc.) and people's right to live happy fulfilling lives independently of their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliations, etc. That passes for left where I'm from.
I also believe gov should not be too authoritarian, that equality of opportunity is more desirable than opportunity of outcome, that issues with classism should be addressed first if we want a more just society where racism and gender based discrimination are shunned, and that individual rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. That's a pretty centred position I think. I also believe that citizenship should be earned. I believe that's a right wing idea.

As for your personal anecdote, I'm glad you fit in so well with your group of friends and sincerely hope you don't eventually find out they've always doubted you and badmouthed you behind your back.

Here's the problem from my perspective. The concept itself is sound. Have a system in place for people who find themselves in a terrible situation in order to minimize the downward spiral effect that they would otherwise have, and allow them to pick themselves back up. The problem is that depending on where you live, that system supports you just enough to get by living. In some situations, it still allows you to work minimally (iirc it's around 18 hours/wk where I live). So some people with zero ambition (among other things) will happily coast on this pathetic "salary". I've met many who are proud of this, thinking they're "fucking the man" because they're making money to do nothing, or that they are owed by the shitty government and thereby perpetuate this stereotype of lazy, good for nothing pogey. I've also met people who've used the system out of necessity, and now live a normal, or even successful life, but they are at the minority, at least in terms of vocalisation, which brings out a whole different discussion.

Essentially it has that often quoted excuse for the failure of communism, where it's good on paper, but doesn't account for human behaviour. But I still think it's a necessary system to have in place.
