Ok, so I'm going to need a bit of a rundown on tattoo culture from you guys. I've always admired tats/piercings and for most of my life I've been too hesitant, insecure, w/e to go out and get some (mostly because I was pretty overweight, but now I've lost a good 90lbs). I recently got a helix and nose loop piercing, so I'm slowly becoming more comfortable with these sort of things and now want tattoos.
I've been lurking these threads for a long time and have saved probably 100 images that I really like and mostly wanted to know how to approach getting a design. I know probably the best way to get a tattoo is to design it yourself so your not biting some artists w/o credit, but what about altering a current design? I see so many tattoos posted in these threads that are awesome, but honestly a lot of them are very similar in theme and style and I wanted to know how shameful it is to bring in a drawing and just have them alter it to fit you more. I probably won't travel across the country for a specific tattoo from a specific artists, at least not right now.

I guess I just want to know what you guys think is some good tattoo acquisition etiquette. Thanks

Find an artist that you like, email or call and set up a consultation to discuss what u like.. style, location, etc. Make sure you ask how many hours to finish and how much $$. Just copying something that will be printed in your skin is something good tattoo artists won't let you do, so I would say find the ideas and show them to your artists, and try to merge them into something special to you. That is what I did with mine. Having a source of inspiration =/= Copying.

Most tattoo artists really don't care all that much. It's bad etiquette to just rip a tattoo directly and make the artist give it to you as is. You usually want to give your artist some creative freedom. e.g I want a black and white skeleton tattoo, draw a design for me please. Some tattoo artist are pricks and will only do originals or are very specific in placing etc. Don't really mess with these artists that much. Imo, they are usually just egotistic and not as good as they think they are.

This is not the most common tattoo ever, but it is pretty common. I want it myself. I would ask the artist to try and add something to it. Give them a chance to change it around. They are an artist after all. Tattoos boil down to an artist being commissioned for drawing something. Give them some artistic liberty and it will pay off (no shame in telling them you just don't like it). Best of luck.

I have a tattoo myself, and I will say even if you think it's cool now, you won't forever. You may like your tattoo forever, as it can be a piece of art, but your tastes change over time. That's just how life works. Your forearm is a very visible space. Something trendy now won't be trendy in a few years and something like that isn't exactly 'art'. If you like the piece get it somewhere less visible. Get something better than a knock off banksy on your forearm.
I know that was preachy, but I've known too many people in my life with shitty forearm tattoos, and it's a bummer because unless you're wearing long sleeves it's on display for everyone.

I have upwards of 25 on me, I helped in a studio for a year. You want credentials about who is giving advice, there it is. You might rightfully decry my attentionwhoring and I cannot suggest good traditional/oriental artists, or many american artists for that matter, I can suggest...different artists. Unusual or distinctive styles. Plus in the same way I can tell you if something is a diamond or not by eye, I have my eye in for artists to a certain extent. I like using up and coming artists for small ideas off the back of that.

Very thin lines and some colours fade can start to fade after 2 to 5 years, bold black lines can hold thousands of years, if your skin is conserved the right way, Ötzi still has many visible tattoos, as he was preserved in ice. also exposure to sun, an inexperienced tattoo artist, bad ink, placement, etc. influences the lifespan of a tattoo. A tattoo on the palms of your hand won't stay as long as a tattoo on your chest. Skin renews faster, is used more often, stuff like that.

3. if you've got a job that allows face tats and are already heavy tattooed, go for it.
4. you're not postie and no good tattoo artist will easily give you a face tat, if you're not blasted already. But as you sound like you've got no tattoo at all and are a minor, just go to the cheapest shop you can find, or ask a friend, who's got a tattoo gun and diy.

Are you going to go the handpoke or the machine way?
Most of what i can tell you is::::::::::: clean the surface where you're gonna leave your stuff, use plastic film on everything, use gloves, use actual tattooing stuff, ink, needles and stuff even if you're handpoking, it helps A LOT
If you're using a machine, take care when setting it up, and take your time, it probably will end up being a bad tattoo but you'll learn a lot with it, the depth the needle has to go(it's really not a lot, use a bigger needle like a 9rl or up because it'll cause less blowouts than a small like 3rl or 5rl since it's easier to use)
It you're doing handpoke, look up some techniques online, don't just stab your skin like a maniac because it'll take even longer than the normal
Try to have fun and go slow, both ways are very technical and it'll take some time till you get shit right
