Besides, Mayhem, Bathory, and Burzum shirts have been co-opted by GOOMs, posers, and falses, so the appeal of wearing it as a 'subcultural signal' is lost. When you wear your Burzum shirts, you're just an autist wearing a bad graphic tee. It's not even a declaration of taste anymore.

The shirts coming out of the dissoshit trend, for example, are insanely good, but I'm not sure that people would really lump Mitochondrion and Abyssal in with black metal.

As a musician and a fan of "extreme" metal I can safely say that 90% of the bands (new and old) that fit into the genre are redundant, lifeless copies of better artists who came before them. For every Carcass there's a million grindy worship bands and for every Darkthrone there's a million "cold", "lo-fi" and "trve" black metal bands. Sure, you can find some good shit in there since some bands actually understand the difference between inspiration and mimicry: Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega are probably the newest "black metal" that I find enjoyable. The more you branch out and try to find new bands, the more you start hearing and seeing the same shit funny enough.

Most black metal bands beyond the start of the "second wave" seem more concerned with taking a piece of the past for themselves. Putting on their uniform: their battlevest, nails, patches and facepaint then screeching about the same themes of fantasy, paganism, satanism, whatever. Despite claiming to be so "anti everything" they aren't far removed from juggalos at this point in regards to their homogenous fashion.

It is definitely true that 90% of BM bands are copies of better bands, but it's not a dirty secret or anything to hold against BM. -good patch selection that reflects interest in the music and doesn't look like the owner just clicked on a web shop for metal merch and copped all the patches from the first site. I won't judge someones taste in metal for a modern slayer patch, but if the vest is just bands like Amon Amarth, FFDP and shit like that, they shouldn't have started a vest in the first place. It should reflect your individual interest and likings in metal and when there are only entry level metal bands, then the interest can't be that high. And buying merch is a great way to support underground bands.

-the patches need to be arranged in a pleasing way. Getting a vest and plastering it to the point where no denim is visible anymore looks like shit most of the time.

-the jacket or vest should fit the person.

-spikes and studs can be cool, but arrangement is key again.

-don't fuck up the colour scheme. If you're into black metal, you'll most likely have solely black/white patches. If you sew a colorful patch between them, it may stand out in a bad way, think about this beforehand.
