What you said is basically what I did. My hair turned to this dark brown jewfro around the start of high school, before that it was like dirty blonde and I could spike it. So all through high school and college I would buzz cut it down to like a 2-3 level clipper. Decided last year to just let it grow and I like the results.

What I do to fade is start off with no guard and just cut a line around my head making sure it's flush (when first trying this, cut lower than you want for when you inevitably mess up). Then I put a guard on on and just trace the line, cutting about a quarter inch or less from the line up towards the top of my head.

After the line is nice and even, I move the lever to the middle position and repeat the process.
Next I fully extend the lever and repeat again. Should be good by then, but if you like your hair longer on the sides, you may need to repeat this process with more guards.

Once I'm near the top, with whatever setting I'm on (guard on with lever fully extended usually) at the highest point, I'll put the clipper perpendicular to the floor and trace my head around. Finally I'll clean up with scissors to get the hairs I missed or are sticking out.

It's gonna be really difficult at first, but it gets easier each time.

Yeah, it's pretty intense. The first thing anyone should do is determine what face shape they have. Just google male face shapes and look for an infographic. Likely, you'll fall closely into oval, round, diamond, square, or something similar.

Find one that obviously has the same face shape as you, and KINDA the same hair texture.

So i think (?) you have an oval face, which works with ALMOST any hairstyle. Trim your neckhair and wear light stubble on your face, 3-5mm, and go for a style similar to attatched.

Get a product to help control your frizz. Maybe a light spray that contains argan oil, or perhaps a good Fiber hair product. American crew is the go-to. Curly hair is extremely variable though, and you might need to try a few things.

Pomade is classy as fuck. Great for slicks and SOME quiffs, and pompadours.

Generally you use hair products to fix problems. So what is the problem?

The big one:

You hair might be too thin, or it might be too heavy. If its thin, it looks flat on your head. If it's thick, it generally doesn't stay where you want it, and is stubborn and thick. It's fucked, but each end of the scale causes problem.

Mousse, and a hairdryer. After the shower, towel dry, and with damp hair, get a hunk of mousse all through it. Massage it around. Then hairdry it on medium heat, medium speed, and keep pushing it UP with your hands. Keep going until your hair is dry. Set it to the shape you want while doing this. It'll feel like there is NOTHING in your hair after its dry, and it'll stick up. After this, you'll want to style it with a finishing product.

Fuck man, there's billions, and depends on the style. GENERALLY, a fiber is your best bet if you're not sure. But depending on style, you either need to focus on hold strength, shine, matte finishes, or whatever other variable you are trying to correct that your hair lacks. You might even try sea-salt spray to get a beach or bed-head look.

Some people enjoy being able to run their fingers through their hair and feel like nothing.

Look into clays, waxes, and some high-hold fibers.

We all do, but it gets tough. There are hair powders that seem intimidating, but are surprising high-hold, and work at the roots rather than the ends of your hair, allowing you to still run your hands through it. Sea-salt spray also allows this, but the first few times you run through, you'll feel your fingers catch on some salt.

When you begin thinning, or when you have thin hair in general, stick away from 'wet' types of products. For example, gels, pomades, or any product that kinda stick your hair together in a 'wet' way. Reason being, it creates peaks and valleys in the hair that show the scalp. If you already have thin hair, it will accentuate it.

Messy hairstyles work well for thinning hair, because it splays the hair out, creates volume, and stops they whole 'peak and valley' texture when all the hair is moving in one direction. Messy hairstyles are legit the way to go.

I use just a bit of hair foam right after washing it, and just run my hand through it every morning, no need for a hairbrush. If you want it to look as full as in the picture you should dry it right after the washing (use a towel to absorb most of the water and then use a blow dryer).
The foam should keep it in shape till the next wash, but if you have to style it again just wet your hands a bit and run them through your hair.
