Thanks for the thread OP

I need winter boots too and came here for recommendations.

I'll have a $100 USD. I dont know if thats too much or little.

I just know I want my feet to be warm and dry and for my boots to be sturdy and good tread to not slip on ice.

I dont know anything about boots though. I hear the name Timberland a lot about boots.

I dont want to pay too much or be sporty. I have real bad circulation so boots that stay warm and dont slip are kind of a big deal for me.

Ill leave it to you guys to decide. I saw some things I liked. Im not sure why some are ripping on the Bean boot. They look very practical and effective.

Boots are purpose oriented, imho. If you focus on style too much, you miss the point of a good boot. And the beans are very distinct. I think they would look good with the right outfit, especially if the outfit is equally purpose oriented.

OP, I have a pair of bean boots that I literally wear every single day from mid-October through March. They're comfortable, warm, damn-near water resistant, and (I think) they look great. Most of the autists on this board won't like them though, so bear that in mind.

I'll teach you fags to make openly bigoted assumptions about jackboots, you untermensch sonofabitch. You people have to politicize everything, even a cozy boot thread.

It was wrong to gas the pinkos when there was still plenty of skin left on our knuckles to smash faces with. I say do it in the open and make examples of them.

When you see a boot worn mostly by women, it tells you everything you need to know about the males who wear them. Dreckig wurmer.

Casual hikers. Nice because they are adaptable to different settings.

>>12935771

They do look good if they match the other clothes. Look like more of a hunting boot though; I dont see deep tread on the sole. But easy to keep clean and conditioned. Look great for short weekend outings where snow and ice aren't expected but you want comfort, protection from rain and can easily rinse mud. They look like they were built with a definite climate, decidedly wet, and terrain in mind. Fine for cold but not freezing.

Well, these were the first cut from JCPenney:

https://www.jcpenney.com/p/weatherproof-alpine-mens-water-resistant-insulated-winter-boots/ppr5007230834
https://www.jcpenney.com/p/weatherproof-traverse-mens-water-resistant-insulated-winter-boots/ppr5007230835
https://www.jcpenney.com/p/propet-blizzard-mens-mid-boots/pp5003970433

But after stumbling upon Dick's Sporting Goods, I decided they seemed to be more purpose oriented when it came to boots. The ones at JCPenneys were fine, if generally thin on tread, which is one of the easy places manufacturers seem to look to reduce price point. But being more dress oriented, they would probably age fast for me as I would be in harsher conditions.

So at Dicks, I came upon Columbias, Timberlands and a set of Muck's.

I dismissed these because they seemed a bit too extreme even for me, as I have to cross between casual and harsh settings frequently:

https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/columbia-mens-bugaboot-plus-iii-xtm-omni-heat-waterproof-600g-winter-boots-15cmbmbgbtplsxtmmfbo

https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/columbia-mens-bugaboot-omni-heat-waterproof-200g-winter-boots-15cmbmbgbtmnhtmdxfbo/15cmbmbgbtmnhtmdxfbo

These Timberlands

https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/timberland-mens-chilberg-200g-waterproof-winter-boots-16tldmchllbrgwpnsfbo

And these Mucks

https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/muck-boot-mens-peak-hardcore-insulated-waterproof-field-hunting-boots-15mbompkhrdcrblkcfbo

Its a tough choice now. The Timberlands are probably the most dress oriented and stylish. The Mucks seem the most durable and purposed, the Columbias seem to balance utility with appearance.

The JCPenney ones, again, are for more casual use and can probably get only one or two winters out of without them looking worn.

As for style, Im open to wide samples as long as I can find some niche for them. Which is why the Timberlands are probably so popular, because they can go between style and use rather easily.

What are the appropriate products to clean, condition and water-proof such leather?

Well, while I wait for this vapid board to render any useful information, I have learned about saddle soap and mink oil.

Saddle soap, Ive learned , contains lanolin and beeswax. The lanolin is from wool bearing animals.

Mink oil contains palmitoleic acid.

As for product(s) to clean, condition and water proof, I havent settled on one. I am looking at Youtubes for help.

And now a word about mink ranching. Just because I love minks.

I am now also learning that since these are full grain leather, saddle soap is good for cleaning and conditioning. I also learned that you can over-oil them, which isnt good either, and doing so can theoretically rot stitching, or just make them softer than I want for a winter boot.

I also dont want them shiny, so I read that I should avoid things with high fat content, like the mink oil. Mink oil also makes reduces the breathability of full grain leather, closing the pores. It would be fine if I wanted them supple and shiny. These details matter. I dont wanna be that moron that does something like use oil on nubuck and then wonder why the color and texture was ruined.

So I will likely go with good ol' saddle soap to clean and condition and skip the mink oil. Then I will find something with beeswax for water proofing

Why are you frowny facing?

I dont understand people trying to stir shame by posting pics of family love. I assume the implication is that one is lame if they arent surrounded by friends in some wild and crazy party that looks like a Budweiser advertisement. I dont know what the joke is with a grandma lighting a bday cake is otherwise.

Real fucking life is not a goddam advertisement. I never had a bday party after 16. That one was practically an accident. The two before that were tense nightmares because they were unable to mask that my step parents didnt especially think it was something to celebrate.

I'll stop there before I start ranting about ingrates posting FB gripes during Thanksgiving and Christmas irony trolls coming.

Next time your birthday rolls around and you want a party and no ones around, look at the ground. Its made of all the stuff that died. You're above it. Take your pulse, your heartbeat is the music. Breathe deep, appreciate the world around you then flip it the bird and go buy some tasty cake. Friends and family come and go, but you'll be there. You have to be able to count on yourself for love first. And remember that I said happy birthday.

I dont think so. My only concern might be that they are too heavy. If they dont feel heavy and resist water and stay warm for winter and are well made, they seem fine. Its too much for me, but for you, your style and comfort or daily routines, they might be fine. Theres a difference between the urbanite who has to sit in all day and the ones that spend all day running around dodging cars, litter and puddles.

Not counting the thug you might have to kick in the nuts.

I'll reserve aesthetic appraisal of wellies. I'll just concede they are popular for certain uses and environments and leave it at that. There are many types for many situations and settings, so its not like I can evaluate the whole style based on any one pair anyways.

My bigger point would be that form follows function, so if they fit a required or desired function, then 'well enough'.

Its an older design too, from a time when materials afforded different options than the many we have now. It would seem speed of fabrication and suiting was a priority once. Sometimes you just need a lot of workable boots really quickly and thats fine too.

I think the beans are fine in the same way. They are clearly purpose oriented. They look great for certain regions and climates, namely wet ones.

Besides, if you pass or fail a boot based wholly on looks based on one persons style, then you're missing the point of boots altogether. Otherwise people would be wearing wing tips to hunt in. I'll say it again, form follows function. Beans have theirs, and so do Wellingtons.

Like I said, Beans are made in Maine, and I can totally see why people next to a river and an ocean surrounded by bogs and traversing farm country in winter would come up with Beans. Boats, fish and bogs. The Bean makes perfect sense. People dont feel like wearing rainboots 24/7 or looking like stormtroopers in the coffee shop.

I think thats stain, not artificial wear, or 'distress' as its called when you want to wear something in before sale.

Not concerned with that or the logo. But the tread is curious. One assumes its a summer boot for outdoors and warmer temps. They are clearly targeted for easier terrain.

I can see these being popular in the south, namely Florida or Louisianna where there are flat wetlands. The lack of separation from heel to sole tells me they might be meant for docks. If not, thats where they would seem the most practical.

That tread tells me whoever designed it did not intend it to be run over a lot of dry dirt or stones.

Those boots, even with their leather sole, are more practical for actual deep snow than any goretex sneaker worn by an American cop. When you're in deep snow, treads don't matter, only height, waterproofing, and breathability, and a leather jackboot is the clear best choice.

Ironically leather soles are horrible on sidewalks and parking lots which tend to be icy rather than snowy after being paved. Do a little research or even just a little critical thinking before you pretend you know everything about what makes a functional boot.

>critical thinking

So you imagine cops being in deep snow, but not on pavement where theres ice.

As opposed to just having a boot with tread that can handle both effortlessly. Which was the whole point until you waltzed in with jackboots, having nothing to do with the Wellingtons being discussed. Fucking brilliant. I said specifically city cops. So where do you suppose city cops patrol?

You'll make a great lawyer. You will get your client off murder by proving his neighbor never had a parking violation.

Take your autist strawman meds and go to bed. Someone should be ashamed of even letting you near a keyboard in your mentally enfeebled condition.

Obviously city cops wear goretex sneakers because they're practical in cities. You said that the Finnish boots were impractical and I told you that they're practical for what they're designed for.

A boot with tread would definitely be more flexible and more practical overall. I never claimed otherwise.

Also, the Finnish boots were always jackboots, you just called them wellies. You may notice that the original filename calls them jackboots.

Wellingtons are not jackboots. They dont even have the same provenance, unless the connection is that they both go on feet and not the head. They share a resemblance and perhaps some convergent evolution, but are hardly the same.

Since you apparently just woke up from some narcoleptic fit, I remind you that we were discussing Wellingtons. I am not here to parse filenames anyways. Try to stay on point.

This routine of you realizing you screwed up mid post, then posting anyways, and then posting again to defend the last muff up is wearing thin.

Much like the tread of a Wellingtons second winter, I might add

ha cha cha.

Well *I* was discussing Wellies and having some fun with The Dusty Ole' Finn (they're all dusty, very dusty). I have no idea what you are on about. Perhaps the purpose of a dress boot and an actual combat boot of the modern era is confusing you.

Regardless, this is tiresome. It is lunch, and my burger, which you are keeping me from, awaits. I'll barely have time for seconds or dessert at this rate.

Adieu.
