>>12053909
Eeh, I have them for a while now and never warmed up to them yet. They're the only boots I know that can feel too narrow yet too loose at the same time. The leather is so incredibly soft it doesn't really give you much stability, compared to the Beckmanns or Iron Rangers.
Also they only really look that great new. Like another anon said they crease hard. They still look great, but I'd say: new, 1000k > IR, but after 6 months of wear, IR > 1000k.

that stuffs expensive though. my dad wants to get me a gift, but he doesn't have a lot of money and I don't want my gift to break his bank.

He already knows I want boots because my mom told him last time they talked. If I tell him to not get the boots he's gonna feel bad. I already tried but he feels guilty about not giving me a gift for the last 3 years/not helping with tuition so refuses to back down.

So now I gotta try and find some boots that aren't pricy, but still look okay. Fuck the quality.

R.M williams is a solid choice, probably the other guy doesn't like the xhunkier profils but it is a workboot (meant to be anyway). Or just grab a chelsea from any of the common shoe companies (trickers, meermin, churches are sorta hit and miss, sanders, etc)

You do realize that wolve1k's are total pieces of shit, right?

3 important reasons why you shouldn't bother:

1) made out of horween's chromexcel leather. That's not a bad thing, but the quality of cxl that wolverine use, being mass producer of disposable workwear, is the lowest tier.

Okay, maybe you get lucky and the cut you get is decent enough.

2) Wolverine cheap-out majorly (majorly!) on one of the fundamental parts of shoe construction: The insole.

They do not use the full leather insole like their competitors do with the red wing heritage line, or virtually all other bootmakers worth bothering with at all, they use a shitty fibreboard, covered with a leather sock to give the illusion that it has the traditional (standard) construction. This is basically a compounded mash of shit that has fallen off the cutting table, maybe paper, other cheap shit to build it up. It is not chosen for its longevity, only because it is cheap for the manufacturer, unlike full leather insoles.

It's basically the most budget of budget constructions you can get away with without resorting to the sort of disposable crap sneakers are made out of.

If you want footwear that cuts all these corners, sure, buy wolverine 1ks.

The only "american heritage" brand, that's below say, $350-500 that's worth it is Red Wing.

All the others (thororgood, chippewa, wolverine et.al) cheap out on parts of construction, particularly no. (2).

>3 important reasons why you shouldn't bother:
Forgot reason 3)

Oiled leather soles are retarded.
Get something with composite/rubber soles.

Leather soles for somehing worth resoling properly. Wolverine's are not worth this effort.

I agree with almost everything you're saying
I've had a pair of 1ks for the past five years
worn the fuck out of them
despite all those downsides they've held up really great. After four years I finally had a vibram sole stitched on in place of the leather. The insoles aren't the most comfortable and I should probably replace mine but they still look fine and haven't fallen apart at all.
If I did it over again I would probably buy a different boot but not Red Wing. The chunkier silhouettes really do make them a different style of boot.

Also chiming in that my Filsons are fantastic heritage boots with great lining, insoles, and outsoles. Incredibly substantial.

>The insoles aren't the most comfortable and I should probably replace mine
You can replace that sockliner, the thin leather covering that your foot actually touches, but you cannot replace the insole. That's why its quality at the outset is so important. It's deep in the shoe and everything else is attached (sewn or glued or both) to it.

My post was not to say that they would fall apart instantly; a "piece of shit" piece of footwear can last for years. Look at all those beat to death converse sneakers you can see people wearing everywhere.

But, rather, that if you have the option to buy something that is objectively better made for a comparable price, then that is the better choice overall, questions of styling notwithstanding.

I think w1k's can be had on deep discount more often than rw's heritage line, so there's that; buy enough of something, rotate them, and they could last your foreseeable lifetime if you bothered to take care of them.

aren't you referring to the midsole?
I was under the impression that the insole was the piece of shitty leather covered cardboard

It can mean those replaceable inserts, but that's not what they should be called.

The insole is an actual irremovable part of the shoe construction (proper shoe construction),

That people have taken to calling those inserts "insoles" is probably because of most modern shoes being like sneakers with a solid synthetic chunk (might be layered) that makes up outsole and insole combined, with the removable insert placed in on top for comfort.

Dunno.
But insoles are insoles.

pic related are mine after two years of regular wear and little care
I mostly bought them because they are a good compromise between real™ and designer boots
due to the combination of a solid construction with a leather sole
am quite happy so far, they are really comfy, the leather has held up great (I really should clean them though)
they'll probably need to be resoled within the next year
My favorite part is that they have kept their leather smell over the years
and if you take them off after a long day your feet don't stink like sweat but have a pleasant leathery smell as well.
