Looking for discussion with my economically dicked friends.
Discuss the area you live.
Favorite Canadian brands.
Where to find some good deals.
How you're prepping for f/w.
Positives and negatives of the city you're living in.
>Winnipeg
>Good resturaunt both ethnic and traditional
>Great music and Theatre scene
>Interesting architecture downtown
>Very friendly people
>Easy to bus around
>Low cost of living (I have a 2 bedroom apartment in a nice complex 10 minutes from my university for $1050/Mth)
>The Forks
Negatives
>Cold as tits
>Basically no fashion scene
>No designer boutiques
>The North End
>SJW infested UofW
>high tobacco prices

Thunder Bay here, so I probably know shit-all.
Pros:
>downtown is shaping up and looking pretty
>music scene is pretty cool (mostly since I have good friends in bands)
>biking is okay if you're not going too far
>scenery is great nature-wise
Cons:
>same first three as Winnipeg, but probably a little worse ignoring the cold
>Fort William can keep to itself
>isolated
I'm probably forgetting a ton, but I've found myself enjoying the city a bit more this summer. I'm attending Lakehead in September, so I'll see how that is.

Pros

Hey guys, uni students? If so, UofM? That's where I go, I'm a theatre student. I started just going to thrift shops a lot and started my style from there because that's what I was interested in. From there I went to grailed and got pieces that I liked from designers. If you have a bit of cash and just want basics I'd suggest American apparel on osbourne. If you're a hypebeasty streetwear kind of guy there's chook right around there as well and they have Bape and Supreme.

What kind of engineering? Is it hard to find work in Toronto and Vancouver? I just got a software job in Ottawa. There's a tech sector here, you might want to apply (look up companies in Kanata)

You can also apply in Kitchener/Waterloo there's a tech park there.

Montreal has lots of software dev studios.

Toronto and Vancouver seem like they have plenty of places for technical work. The problem is living expenses -- you don't get a much better salary in Toronto and Vancouver compared to other locations but the cost of living is absurd (fucking lol at housing costs right now)

Look at your university's job postings and stuff (alumni should have access).

It can be depressing as fuck during the winter, but there the first day or two of snowfall tends to be really pretty. Fuck snow any day after that. Summer can be really nice, even if there's a lack of shit going on beyond the downtown.

And lots of native people, yeah. It's crazy the amount of division there is between most native people and non-natives, like in my high school it was pretty typical that natives and non-natives hung out in different groups. Maybe my school was extra clique-y, but still. It's weird how the world sees Canada as some bastion of friendliness and inclusivity, yet racism can persist in a city of 100,000 without much notice.

half the amount of people my age wear cargo shorts and anime tees here, including my brothers. Most of the other Asians my age who can be considered a bit fashionable are mfacore, which looks good on Asians in all honesty but the people downtown have much better variety with their fits (and you'll never see anyone in Agincourt wearing Julius). I bet those fits are better since Brooks Brothers, Muji, and all the stores that sell better quality basics are all in fairview or downtown. Slumblock and housing project people, in Woburn/Cedarbrae wear basic ass sweatpant and roshe run fits here. If you go to anywhere it's a plethora of American Eagle and Aeropostale logos and branding. We literally only have a club monaco at stc, everything else is either fast fashion, outlets that sell lower-end streetwear pieces, or shitty nike knockoffs you find at indian stores in strip malls (which is about 40% of the clothing retailers here). And the vast, vast majority of white people have classic dadcore with autism shoe fits.

>Fashion Scene

Explain to me what all of you think this is. Fashion is not like music, there's no such thing as a fashion scene.

A city having a lot of clothing stores does not mean it has a fashion scene just like a city having a lot of venues does not mean it has a music scene.

It doesn't work with brands either. Just because a city has a lot of brands based there does not mean it has a fashion scene just like a city having a lot of record companies does not mean it has a music scene.

Fashion isn't a public activity or an event, it's more like grocery shopping than going to a concert. Would you talk about a city having a good grocery scene?

I've lived in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, London, and Tokyo. None of them have a "fashion scene". They all have nice stores, they all have fashion brands based within them, they all have people who wear cool clothes. Some of them have these things in larger quantities but none of them have a "fashion scene" in the way that each of them has a music scene. That's because going shopping, walking past brand headquarters, and seeing people on the street in cool clothes are all solitary activities that are totally removed from what a scene is.

It's not like music where you can have good local bands that put on good shows or good promoters that bring in good bands from abroad or good venues that play good music. The closest equivalent I can think of would be good record stores to good clothing stores but otherwise a music scene is a living organism that provides a community experience while a "fashion scene" is a static solitary activity which precludes it from being able to have a scene.

tldr; if you think such a thing as a "fashion scene" exists you will be disappointed with every cities "fashion scene" including places like London, it's just shopping, it's not a scene unless you work within it and then it's still not a scene it's a job.

>chill people
sorry to spout off like this, but i need to write about this as these ideas have been knocking around my brian for a while.

I grew up in van, went to school in mtl and have worked in toronto for a couple years now. I must disagree about vancouverites being chill. although there are a lot of super cool people in van, some of which are very laid back, they are all too focused on keeping their personal image to fit in with my definition of 'chill'

one of the first things that struck me about mtl, is that people talk to you on the streets. this NEVER happened to me in vancouver. further, in Montreal, you can't help but make friends whereas in van, people only talk to you if youre a friend of a friend. (i've heard this secound point from people i've met in mtl/toronto who visited van and tried to make friends)

one time i was walking home from a friends and a guy, whose birthday it was, asked me to come out and celebrate with him. i went with him to a bar, he paid for a bunch of my drinks and i ended up staying out all night with him.

another way this chillness manifests itself is with the opposite sex. every girl in van acts like shes better than you and in montrela, girls eye fuck me all the time. on the metro, at the grocery store, on the street, in the library, nobody is pretending they dont want sex.

as another example, i was playign soccer in the rain by myself and some girl jogged by, we caught eyes but she kept running. the next lap she comes over to me and asks to play. we pass and shoot for a bit and she invited me back to her place.

i think i'm going to come off as bragging, but i'm only trying to illustrate with real life examples how people here just dont give a fuck. nobody is trying to act too cool they are just themselves and want to meet/fuck/drink with you. in van, people are so focused on looking cool that they never do anything new or unusual for fear of looking lame, which in my opinion is not chill.

Toronto is junk if you aren't living in a condo downtown. Even then getting fucking anywhere in the city is a complete shitshow with half the roads closed at any given time and traffic completely backed up everywhere. Uniqlo apparently coming to TO Sept 30th

http://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/uniqlo-launches-first-canadian-store-at-cf-toronto-eaton-centre-on-friday-september-30-591144361.html

Hes right about the shops haven is ok dont get me wrong but its trash compared to the vancouver location

Honestly outside of designer flagships there are very few stores worth visiting in north america and almost all of them are in nyc and la opening ceremony, dsm, h lorenzo, maxfields all come to mind as cohesive and well put together retail spaces

in toronto you have blue button shop that is a well run albeit small japanese lifestyle store selling contemporary brands you cant get anywhere else in the city, haven i touched on earlier, nomad has maybe one or two people there with any vision and the rest are fucking drones plus the smorgasbord of brand they carry is silly, working title has cool staff and might become good but knowing how other toronto stores are run its unlikely.

The guy making the first post is more than likely just fed up with toronto posters being in complete denial over how shit this city is for fashion and cmon calling someone rude on 4chan get real ffs

Ottawa feels like a big suburb with a smattering of nice old buildings. Downtown is pretty dead, everybody just goes home after work. Biggest problem for me is the complete lack of concert venues, there's Bluesfest in July and the hockey arena for the occasional big name, but that's about it.

It's like suburban Toronto if downtown didn't exist and most of the immigrants were replaced by people who moved here from small town Ontario.
