Preventing the production of melanin (dark pigment):
- Be a NEET and cover your windows to prevent both UVA and UVB from reaching you
- Go full Yohji Yamamoto. Cover your skin to protect it from the sun. Use a sunhat.
- Use a +50 SPF sunscreen on face/hands if you ever leave the house.
- Buy a +2% hydroquinone solution online and apply it as per directions.

For removing already existing pigment:
- Use salicylic acid/lactic acid/glycolic acid peels at somewhat low percentages.
- Start applying topical niacinamide products as per directions.

If you're excessively naturally melanin-augmented from birth, then you need to use a pulsed dye laser - repeatedly, everywhere.

In any case, see a derm.

there's some confusion about the different terms that complicates things a bit.

people can refer to exfoliating toners by saying 'exfoliators', but they can also refer to an a scrub or clay mask.

most exfoliating toners are meant to be left on the skin to allow their active ingredients to act on, and in, the skin. they're therefore almost never washed off, and should therefore almost always be used after a cleanser/scrub/clay mask.

scrubs and clay masks also exfoliate the skin, but in a more mechanical way. they physically remove dead skin and some oils from the skin surface, whereas ordinary not-that-exfoliating cleansers removes dirt, oils, some microorganisms, and a minor amount of dead skin.

since cleansers really can't do that much of a difference on recently-exfoliated clean skin (since what it's good at removing is mostly gone), it would seem like it's not needed to use a cleanser after using a mechanical exfoliator. it's also generally a good thing to not expose exfoliated skin (thinner, more sensitive, more easily dried) for the detergents in the cleanser, as this makes it more prone to irritation.

if you instead clean your skin before you use a mechanical exfoliator, you will keep the excess dirt/oils/some microorganisms from getting mashed into the skin during the later physical exfoliation process/scrubbing - as small wounds are often created and the skin becomes thinner and more sensitive in general.

but, uhh, in general: you'll be fine.
if I'm exfoliating my skin using a scrub/clay mask, I go a bit easier on the cleansing in order to not dry my skin out too much. most mechanical exfoliators are 'cleansing' in the same way as cleansers (but more exfoliating), so you actually don't need both at the same time, but it definitely seems beneficial to clean the skin before physically exfoliating.

1. cleanser (no scrub)
(2. cleansing/exfoliating scrub or clay mask.)
3. exfoliating toner

note that you generally shouldn't use scrubs/clay masks on a daily basis. also, your skin might not like you for exfoliating it in many different ways during the same routine (or day). if it doesn't like what you're doing, it'll let you know.

Yeah it would def be a better moisturizer than the aloe gel. I have oily skin so it was a bit too much for me but it does sink into the skin quickly and feels nourishing. The snail in it might help w the acne too.

Do you know if there are any specific ingredients that you are allergic to? What products have you tried?
Worst comes to worst, invest in some hats and UV protective clothing.

What would you recommend for spot treating pimples, if you don't mind me asking?

>> No.11578749

>>11578708
haha okay get ready for my fucking essay:

-highest concentration of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide you can get. The ones I use are by clean & clear, can be easily found at any pharmacy. Those are the easiest and most tried&true way.

-Another great option is acne stickers, generally from asian brands (cosrx, apieu). Korean people will wear them out during the day, theyre little clear stickers with medication on them. I wear them at night and for certain types of pimples they can help a lot.

-It also depends on the type of pimple, like a whitehead vs cystic. With whiteheads, I use the above mentioned spot treatments until they come to a head. Then I pop them at night with clean hands and put a hydrocolloid over to suck out the rest of the pus and allow it to heal, has been working well recently. Cystic is a lot harder to treat, the best thing to do is to try and stop the inflammation with similar products.

hello /fa/ so I've had shitty skin all my life and I was wondering what would be the best cleanser for dry and sensitive skin?? A month ago I decided to try St Ives apricot cleanser (cheap shit I know) and it was a fucking miracle. 2 weeks later of use and my skin was clear and fucking amazing, never so before! This is coming from a guy who has tried nearly EVERYTHING! Antibiotics, cortisone even Accutane, and all my problems were fixed a fucking 5$ cleanser. I was retarded enough to go back outside without sunscreen and my skin is back to shitty usual. Plus that cleanser (used it all up) isn't even sold in any of my local stores anymore. So what would be the best cleanser for sensitive and dry skins? Exfoliants and scrubs ruin my skin. Moisturizing doesn't do shit. I live in Canada btw

Ever had any experience with Tea Tree Oil as a means for fighting pimples?

>> No.11578867

>>11578834
I was about to mention it! When I first got into skincare I bought out the whole tea tree oil line at the body shop. Had a little vial of the oil for spot treatments too.
Personally, they don't have as dramatic of an effect as salicylic acid, but I think they do help. I prefer using it as a preventative measure. The Apieu stickers I mentioned have tea tree oil as one of their main ingredients.

just use physical ones like titanium or zinc

I hate to say it, but this anon is right. I have cystic acne and pretty bad scars on my face. After reading this post I said what do I have to lose and started getting the daily recommended value of food groups(I got the info from myplate.gov). It did not do much for my existing acne, but in 2 days all of my scars that have been there for a year or two are barley visible. This anons science isn't right, but try the method hes promoting, what do you have to lose?

reminder that UVA is the one leading to photo-aging.

that is: the one where the FDA doesn't approve any modern filters like tinosorb s/m, so you are stuck with bad sunscreen with a max rating of PPD 10, while the rest o the world has ones with ratings 5x as good.

so for fair skinned that get burned after 10 mins, that's only 100 mins exposure even with the best sunscreen you can buy in the US.

i was talking about topical, I dont have a lot of experience w supplements for skincare.
There are some combo AHA/BHA toners and stuff out there, if you're interested. Mostly in asian skincare.

As for AHA, lactic is better for sensitive skin since it's gentler. I generally use glycolic. Strong peels are good but I've found that gentler formulas meant to be left on overnight tend to be more effective. I don't have any specific recommendations, but you can look at the skincare FAQ page, they have a few. Start out slow otherwise your skin will not be happy. And make sure wear sunscreen!! Acids make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Be careful, good luck.
