To be honest, it's 100% useless nowadays, and I'm also perplexed. I know some older people who still use pocket protectors and the like, but for the majority of folks the pocket is entirely useless and it doesn't matter whether it's present or not. I've always simply assumed the presence is a hold-over from the older days when people might actually use the pocket, and I've noticed that many custom shirtmakers will not put one on the shirt because it looks dumb. AE is fine for entry to mid tier shoes. They've had some issues in recent years, but are a fairly respectable brand. Off the top of my head their most iconic/well-known/well-respected shoes are the Park Avenue and the Strand, but I believe those are both more dressy shoes.
