Boots General.

Discuss brands, care and maintenance, etc.
Post pictures of your boots, post outfits with boots.

If anyone feels particularly knowledgeable about leather quality, maintenance, buying boots at particular price brackets, feel free to write something about it however short, and we can start compiling it into something useful that can be referred to.

Well I pulled the trigger on the Corcorans despite the recent Negative reviews. I attribute them to retards not knowing you have to wear a boot and break it in.

Im still breaking them in. But so far I absolutely love them. These are the side zip fields so they have the lug sole and side zipper. Debating getting a second pair of the jump boots.
The size I got was too big, returned them and got a half size smaller. I put em on and thought they were much better and started wearing them, figured out a few days later I shoulda sized down another half for sure. So if you go with Corcorans Id say go a whole size down from what you wear in normal shoes.

Shit picture related

>you have to wear a boot and break it in

while that is somewhat true for most leather footwear, it doesn't mean that there aren't grades of quality in leather footwear.

and i can basically tell just from that picture that the leather on those is crappy coated corrected grain nonsense.

and hey, with years of wear and upkeep, even crappy corrected grain can look okayish and feel soft. but that doesn't mean it's high quality leather. it just means they made the sheets of corrected grain thick enough to not wear down instantly.

when you actually handle some vachetta or some full-grain calf you'll know the difference. but not everything needs to be made from soft supple high quality leathers. for instance combat boots do not need to be made from lux materials. so i'm not 'knocking' your purchase per se, it's fine that combat boots made from cheap materials exist. but just know what they are and know what they aren't and don't misrepresent them as something they're not.

yes. the texture of the leather and the way it holds its shape are big indicators. also how it shines (or doesn't) or holds its dye.

handling different leathers in person can give you the queues and reference points you would need to start making judgments from photographs.

Id argue that for most footwear its not relevant anymore. Every pair of sneakers Ive owned didnt need to be broken in. Even most tactical boots for work and such that had other materials on the body. I was moreover specifically referring to leather boots. By the way, these arent soft. At least yet. And I work with saddles/belts/cowboy boots all the time I know what good leather is.

These impressed me because many reviews had stated they were shit leather because they were uncomfortable (hence my comment about breaking in)and mentioned the soles being cheaply attached but I can attest to the opposite.

>>11129707
Just FYI the leather isn't bent by sagging or lack of holding its shape. Its stifly held in those creases from me breaking them in.
Honestly I think the side zip kinda messes with how they shape at least on the insides of the calves. Ill test this theory with a pair of jump boots in the future.

That's after 3 years? Of consistent wear? I usually have to resole stuff every few years if I wear them all the time. Next time you get the heel done, see if you can get some Cat's Paw heels or guards. Supposedly they'll help with wear on the heel. But with your wear pattern, it might not be enough. I found a specific lug sole from Vibram wears slowly, compared to nearly anything else I've worn, and have it on my winter boots. Not always an option, depending on the aesthetic, but perhaps the compound is used to similar effect in other soles.

For a full resole, it can depend. I've been quoted $60 - $130 (CAD), depending on where I've gone/the type of resole needed. boot trees are (at least the ones you would want to pay for) are optimised for american cowboy type boots

they are great for shape retention and the cedar does wonders in keeping the boots smelling fresh providing you have a proper rotation going

Can anyone Id these for me? They're red wings, vintage I believe. And if they aren't being produced, can you point me to some similar models? I really like the sole and the shape of the tip of the boot the most.

You aren't really going to find any that fit both criteria acceptably. It'll lean one way or the other. The best you'll find will probably be something similar to Red Wings Beckman boots. Nice, polished leather with thin commando soles attached to stacked leather. You can probably find any number of dress boots that you like, and get a cobbler to put commando soles on them. Once you start looking for more durable leather or more practical soles they won't look appropriate for business casual. And vice-versa, of course.

Don't forget that if they're getting snow/salt/slush/rain all over them to clean and condition them constantly.

Keep in mind these are not factory bought anywhere. This was some guy on reddit who resoled his IR's to a commando sole after a year of wear.

Looks so much better than the cork sole, I wish redwing would lend the commando sole to some IR models. Though they tried with the Dainite one, commando just looks so nice.
