Threads like this are why this board will never get better
>newfags and uninformed people asking very easily answered questions
>elitist cunts trying to make themselves feel better, so they shit on the people asking questions

Is it really too much too ask something like
>Can someone explain to me what's great about him?
Yea, he couldve phrased it better or found the answer elsewhere but if you are alll here posting about "your favorite" designer then shouldnt you be able to answer personally? No one is asking to explain Helmut's entire ethos, design background, and creative process. Get over yourselves, all of you were at the same place as these newfags at some point. So you can either continue to make them just as ignorant as they are now by ignoring them(which accomplishes what?) or you can be an active part in helping someone learn about a designer that you ( apparently) love and know a great deal about. So many people in communties like ours and others across the internet are like this
>oh im old and know more so your silly question is so below me that all I can do is laugh and make fun of you
its just as toxic as all the shitposting, and its such an easy thing to change...

>context is key
yes context is key, but not in the sense youre talking about. You have to step back and look at everything going on around that time. Every big maison and design was putting out this absolutely stunning couture collections. While shows like that are incredible to watch and look at, the wearability is little to none. Helmut and a few others around the same time all reintroduced and celebrated wearability in the fashion shows, Helmut's minimalism was so talked about because there were so few others doing what he was doing. He capitalized in a market that people were looking for but had no idea they wanted at the time.

>> No.11109263

>>11108947
He played a very big part in the clean, stark minimalism/industrial look popular in the 90s/early 00s among young professionals, like something youd see out of the matrix or something
he also pioneered the use of things like rubber, metallic fabrics, brought denim into the luxury market, showed the first fashion show on the internet, incorporating military aspects into fashion
very influential aswell, you can see some of his stuff like bondage straps in designers like rick, raf, craig green, damir doma
youd be better off going and reading about it though, theres lots of stuff on the internet

OP here, i approve of
>>11109263

it is important to note that toward the end of his career, especially when he enjoyed a massive budget from Prada, Lang was THE show to watch every season
these days people will say things like 'Dries never puts out a bad show' or 'Vetements is cool when they aren't straight ripping off margiela' but no single brand has an extreme dominance of the intellectual market, to the point of where other brands are copy pasting their ideas for seasons later
Valentino straight ripped off Astro parkas at the end of last year, for instance. 16 year old garment !!
Biker jeans, which got filtered down through fast fashion quite recently, were released in their form as we see them today in 1999 by Lang.

As for those claiming it's boring, maybe his later works from 2001-2005 are more to your liking. Lang was self aware enough to see that his minimalism was over, both intellectually, and that people were expecting something of him, and his following seasons adjusted for this

the best bit about Lang for me was how he could accentuate masculine and feminine shapes without showing bare skin in the obvious places
the bondage straps are placed so perfectly as to create sex appeal, but the outfits remain sophisticated
