For the top watch or the bottom? Either way, I'm a bit of a purist and would tell you to go for a simple leather band for the square one, and a metal band for the bottom.

>> No.11022394

>>11019526
no, thats the 009. The skx007 has black dial and a black bezel. Very solid beaterwatch! If you want something more versatile, look into the SARB033/35 beautiful watch, very tough and can be taken for a swin as well. Strap on some leather and you got a dresswatch. Smack on a steel bracelet and you got yourself a beater!

>> No.11022396

sorry I didn't clarify. The bezel is for the bottom watch and that one really needs a strap although I'm open for any suggestions for the square too.

>>11022396
I guess it depends how you plan on wearing the watch. How big is it and how big is your wrist? Definitely doesn't look like a dress watch, and its fairly large, so I'm inclined to say a metal band. At the same time, if you payed 15 bucks for it that might not be the way to go if you end up spending more on a band.

If the square one has the band pictured than I think its fine.

Again, I'm not fashionable enough or something, but I don't like anything other than metal or leather bands - barring rubber on certain dive watches. If its a big watch that's for every day wear I'd say go metal.

Because OP got into watches yesterday and thinks "automatic is le gentlemans only choice because of the all gears and stuff, and because it's #menswear".

Watch doesn't have to be mechanical/automatic to be a good watch. It's purely subjective. If you value the history behind the engineering and the prestige etc then get an mechanical watch. Objectively speaking quartz movements are better in every way, they are more reliable, they don't require maintenance, and they are more accurate. Only thing that is better about mechanical is their resell value: Mechanical Seamaster is easier to flip than a quartz version. But considering /fa/ mostly discusses cheaper 200 buck watches it's not really an issue. It is entirely up to you if you see the "soul" in mechanical watch or don't. Additionally, you could easily view quartz movement as more impressive engineering feat than mechanical movements if you wanted to view it purely from that way.

It's kind of the same thing why some people must drive a classic Mustang from the 60's even though it requires ton of work and is pain in the ass sometimes, and some might see it as a piece of junk, and some see the "point", the romance.

Also, I'd much rather have a quality quartz movement like thermoregulated Grand Seiko 9F or Citizen A660, than some robot manufactured bulk 2824 ETA mechanical(that they use in up to 2k $ watches btw...) Just trying to make a point there there are differences also in quartz movements and it's not that black and white some people make it out to be.

I own four mechanical watches and only two quartzes but I don't force them to everyone who asks. For some, quartz is a better option. If someone doesn't especially ask for mechanical, then I won't suggest one instead of quartz.

Not him but like you care.

IWC as a whole is shit IMO.
I'm talking from experience of their QC and CS.
Their modern innovations (if they can be called that) are unimpressive.

But you probably don't give a shit about that.

As for the design the watch in question: I've held it in my hands, and it's not particularly interesting.
Nothing about its design would make me choose it over any other bland chronograph.

As a "first serious timepiece" I would, if in your shoes, look to something less fad-of-the-month, which pretty much all 45mm+ watches are.
The trend will pass, and you'll be stuck with something clownish unless you're a sumo with 9" wrists or something.

It's not special, looks wise or engineering wise.
Would not recommend IWC, nor any Richemont Group watch brand due to service issues.

But people will like what they like, even if it is shit.
And they'll buy what they want to buy, because it's their money and they're idiots.

Contrary to what advertisement tells you most girls don't care for boytoys like cars and watches. I know and dated exceptions but it's a rare thing.
That being said, id like to point out that girls arent "plebs", as a comment said but its a simple facr that mechanical watches don't cater the needs of most, as they change accessories often. Fashion watch companies understood that winding watches with nails and having to do adjust them each time is a nuisance so almost all of the watches sold to girls are quartz.
To answer your question: Just get a DW. They are like 90€ and will get you as much compliments by the fair sex as an Omega or Rolex will.

German brands with ETA and/or Sellita movements that have German made cases:
Sinn
Damasko (also has in-house movements).
Muhle Glashuette (in house for one model)
Tutima
Any Ickler brand (Archimede is one, and then there's Limes and some others with equally dumb names).
Union Glashuette

For chrono's look to Sinn and Damasko.
Tool watches are their look and they're more available to outside Germany than the others, especially Sinn..
Damasko makes a more interesting chrono variant with a heavily modified movement. Sinn is not as adventurous in that regard.
Damasko's cases are much more scratch/impact resistant than Sinn, but Sinn's look better and have a greater range of looks.

Nothing's going to look exactly like the speedmasters except a speedmaster.

Get that if that's what you really want.

It looks like the Komono uses normal straps though, the only watch you posted that has weird lugs is the green Skagen so if you get that one you're stuck with the strap it comes on.

If you do get any of those watches and decide to replace the strap with something less cheap and shitty then you should also replace the watch with something less cheap and shitty while you're at it. Skagen and Komono are both fashion watch garbage.

I had a 1963, it was pretty nice overall and I liked it but not enough to wear it often so I sold it. I think it's definitely not a good everyday type watch, it doesn't really match all types of clothing and it's sort of a pain in the ass since it's so delicate overall. It's not waterproof, the acrylic scratches easily so it requires regular polishing if you want to keep it looking good (there is a version with a sapphire crystal but it looks like shit, by the way), and mechanical chrono movements in general and especially the Seagull ST19 movement is notorious for being delicate, prone to failure, and high maintenance.

It's a very good looking watch that offers a pretty cool movement for very cheap and it's eyecatching with an actually interesting history behind it, but you probably won't want to wear it every single day of the week unless you're a pilot in the Chinese Air Force circa 1963.

I think if you want an everyday watch that isn't a diver then you would probably be best suited by something which is sporty enough for casual wear but can easily be dressed up and which is reasonably durable with at least enough water resistance for daily life. Personally the watch which fits that description for me is a Seiko SARB035 and I like it a lot, but there are a million other watches in your price range which could also fit those requirements just as well.

Personally I don't really hate quartz. In fact I'd love to have a high-frequence Quartz.

I just really hate the second hand of a standard-quartz movement (only moves every second). Where mechanical movements accommodate the fact, that time seems to be a continuum.

They're a step away from full-fedora skeleton watches.

Seriously only those types buy such watches.

It's aping the tourbillion look for total poorfags.
Either you tourbillion if you have a spare 100k lying around, or you don't. You especially don't parade around some cheapo watch with an ugly, bottom of the barrel movement.

If the movement is actually worth showing off, maybe. But that's a big fucking IF.

Since most of them are cheapo bare bones disposable mechanical movements it's best to err on the side that doesn't wear fedoras unironically.

>Are the low-end Seikos still decent quality?
What's your reference point?

In general, yes.
If low end mechanical, one could be the only watch you'd need for 10 years, by which time the movement would be shot and it wouldn't be worth servicing and you'd probably buy a new one unless you got so sentimentally attached to it that you wanted it serviced and could find a watchmaker capable of doing so (and by the way the trade is going, that's not a given, not at all at this point).

I wouldn't bother with low-end seiko quartz desu.
Low end quartz you're better off going casio if you're true poor as dirt poorfag, or a citizen eco-drive if you've got at least 100/150 to spend.
Citizen's solar watches make the most sense since you won't have to bother with batteries or repairs or replacement capacitors and shit for at least 15-20 years or more.

Replacing batteries in cheap quartz watches every 3 years gets kinda old.
Cheap solar if you must cheap quartz at all, really.

You do realize that the mechanical watch needs servicing every 3-5 years that costs a LOT more than changing a battery, right?

Certain special edition GS quartz models plus the Citizen Chronomaster line are even more tightly regulated to +-5 sec/yr. The 50 year service interval for the Seiko 9F movement is a misunderstanding, though. The movement is sealed so that the lubricants should theoretically last 50 years, but that's not the same thing as saying that it can go 50 years without servicing and still be perfectly fine. It's still a good idea to service it every several years and that is what Seiko recommends.

>>11039380
Yes Seiko is a pretty great value for the money and if you have no interest in mechanicals then quartz is perfectly fine. If you're not spending a whole bunch on a fancy decorated high end mechanical movement anyway then there's no reason why you should get a cheap mechanical over a cheap quartz. Quartz is more practical anyway. I have several Seikos and I like all of them, I have a few quartz ones too but they're vintage models.

I should have said, compared to other watches roughly around the $100 dollar mark... Honestly I'm happy as long as it won't fall apart after a year... I'd like a nice watch if I can afford it some day but I just couldn't justify spending much more than I am

>> No.11039436

>>11039411
And your point?
What has this post got to do with anything that I said?

>You do realize that the mechanical watch needs servicing every 3-5 years
Need?
No.
Maybe if you have a zenith or gs highbeat. And that's just to be on the safe side.
But that's just the manufacturer's recommended service interval.

A cheapo mechanical like a seiko 5 is designed to last 10+ years for the third world market. Specifically africa, where quartz batteries were hard to come by in the 70's.

Even cheapo russian auto's have a stated service life of 10+ years.

Unless your watch is tickng 24/7/365 for 5 years straight you don't have to be this anal about it. Even then, you're being anal if you rush out to spend money on unnecessary servicing.

If you have several watches and rotate between them you extend general service times of the whole collection.

If you've got a generic eta based plain auto service doesn't cost much.

If you have got a fancy inhouse movement from 2/3 luxury conglomerates or rolex who are limiting spare parts to independent watchmakers necessitating you sending your watch directly to them to be serviced at the highest possible price, yeah, 600 bucks every decade could be worse.

>But is movado pleb tier?
Movada used to be a decent company pre-quartz crisis (pre 70').
Today it is overpriced quartz junk and basic, overpriced mechanicals mostly associated with medium level american malls.

In america, it is a low mall-tier watch. That's their market segment, and that's to whom they cater. Plebs who don't want to be so plebby and aspire to be higher than where they are.

Which is kinda sad IMO, since I think the museum dial is kinda neat. It would be unique, but they've gone so fucking overboard with it that the design has lost most of its novelty, well, that and because they plaster it onto junk watches.

It's sad that they didn't have the foresight to do some proper brand planning and decided to settle into what's probably the comfortable niche of selling to the lower middle class.

So, it's not diesel or fossil or nixon, but it's basically a slightly more refined variant of that species.
And it doesn't have the humble dignity of say, casio which has no delusions about it's affordable, practical nature.
Movado caters to those with flimsy airs of "luxury", who wouldn't know the word if it raped them in the face, but they think they know it, and so they buy movado.

They cost more than they should, they're not very valuable due to overexposure in the wrong places and quality is so so for what you get.

You'll never be able to sell one, if that was ever a consideration for you; just-give-it-away-tier for movado.

Avoid unless you have money to burn on frivolous junk.

Just so you're aware, that's a frankenwatch (komandirskie dial with amphibia bezel). Given the overall condition of the case I'd be inclined to say that someone put an older dial and bezel on a newer case and movement, although without a movement shot I can't be certain. I would, however, suggest that the watch is overall probably newer than the "made in USSR" markings would indicate. It is, however, a real Komandirskie case if the brass showing through is any indication. Amphibias have stainless cases and chromed brass bezels.

That doesn't necessarily mean it's mechanically unsound or that it won't run, however. I own a vostok franken in addition to several all-originals and it keeps time just as well. If you didn't pay a premium for its presumed vintage you probably did okay.

Around $250, right?

You could do worse. It's a miyota quartz movement. In my opinion, it's a bit on the expensive side for a quartz movement. The crystal is mineral glass and not exactly what I'd want for a daily beater. A lot of people would disagree, but for my money a daily beater should have an acrylic crystal; sure, it's far easier to scratch than sapphire or mineral, but it's piss easy to polish, damn near impossible to break, and is far, far cheaper to replace.

There's technically nothing wrong with it and it should work more or less fine for you. Miyota movements are reliable and keep fine time, and of course have less caveats than mechanical movements with the disadvantage that you have to replace a battery every couple years.

My only reservation is that I've never really heard of the brand. If you're interested in other good watches in that price range from someone known, Seiko and Orient make good watches in both mechanical and quartz. Looking only at mechanicals, Tissot also makes some watches around that. Very good vintage Russians made by Raketa and Poljot might also interest you, but you have to do some research to know what you're getting from the dozens of Ivan Ivanoviches selling them on Ebay.

I have nearly the same bezel on an Amphibia, the markings are the same but their alignment with respect to the grooves is different. The numbers are lined up with a valley rather than a peak.

There are some idiosyncrasies in the design. The dial and second hand have (shitty, consistent with vintage and vostok in general) lume but the hour and minute hands have a hollow space where the lume would go, and the dial is a funny little design. I suspect that it's a franken job, but it looks good, it keeps fine time and I got it for cheap, so I'm not unhappy with it.

No worries, friend. You're headed down the rabbit hole. Just remember that at the end of the day it's what you, not anyone else, wants out of a watch that should decide. Plenty of people will tell you that quartz watches aren't "real watches" and that you have to buy mechanical. Some people think that any watch worth less than a used BMW isn't a real watch.

Fuck 'em. A real watch is, and always will be, a watch that:
1. Tells the time
2. Is worn by the person who owns it

Anything else is personal interpretation. By all means be informed, but don't buy too much into snobbery.

Merely as a statement that the watch is all original. I can't guarantee that if it's not black.

The bezels aren't ever really specifically Amphibian bezels except the ones with a lume dot. Komandirskies are actually rather water resistant, using the same compressor construction on the back and crown, I think the only realistic difference is the crystal. The old lume is typically brittle, especially on the hands.

I have like a dozen Vostoks on hand currently, and a few other Russians.

Try locating a for-parts watch with the same case. I think they came as a standard model, or one of the other models might have the same diameter. They're ugly and typically cheap.

Well, as I posted earlier, I sprung for it, but I appreciate the info regardless. The seller is actually a known collector of rare Raketas with a good reputation on watchuseek, so I'm not overly concerned. The really obvious tells like converted movements or mismatched dial/bezel languages all check out too. I'll have to hold off for absolute confirmation until I'm holding the thing, but I'm pretty confident it's all original with the possible exception of the crystal. I already have the correct crystal for that particular watch if it needs to be replaced.

Now to play the Russian shipping waiting game.

There are actually quartz watches that have balance wheels. No idea if that's one of them, but they do exist

I know there are. It's a 10 dollar piece of shit from china and quartz with a balance wheel is very rare

I like this watch, but I can't find anyplace selling it? It's a good, basic silver/white face seiko for under $200. It's just a good beginner watch that I can put on a crocodile leather strap. Does anyone know a place where I can buy this watch, or does anyone know of a watch that is very similar to this one that I can still buy?
