What budget? SARB for $300 is a steal, SKX007 is good and its like $200 if you include a nice aftermarket bracelet, anything that catches your eye from Citizen or Seiko is a pretty safe bet in the $50-150 range. Swatch midrange brands like Hamilton or Tissot or whatever isn't a super great value for the money but they make nice watches for like $500ish.

What are some of the most functional watches?

I don't mind buying separate watches for separate occasions. (i.e Buy one specific watch for hiking and another casual wear.)

Here's some things I do to give you an idea: Hiking, International travel on a fairly regular basis, intense physical training/activities such as biking, working out, jogging, etc., travelling to intense locations such as the local mountains, local swamps, etc.

Now, I do not personally mind buying a luxury watch but it would have to a bit cheaper as I'm not THAT rich but I could afford some good ones like a Tudor, Rolex, etc. However something amongst those brands would likely be more for the business aspect as opposed to my hobbies and physical activities. And as such I've fancied the notion such as GMT-Master II. It's aesthetics and 24 hour hand lend it's usefulness in crossing time zones plus it looks better as opposed to something which I would wear whilst hiking the mountains like a G-Shock or something similar.

Regardless, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Again, I don't mind buying luxury watches but I couldn't outright buy 2+ unless it was very good, even then I doubt it; but I digress, thanks for any help in advance.

Whats the best cheap digital watch to go swimming with that looks good. I already have a diver watch (it's heavy and chunky) and a casio f91w but I live in SoCal so it's pretty often I'll jump into a pool or the ocean when I'm high or drunk with people so I need something lightweight and durable that I can wear with pretty much anything.

>> No.10340390

>entry level usually refers to the most famous and well known version of a product...
I suppose that's one definition, but I think the more common usage of entry level is the cheapest well-recognized version of a product (price is usually the biggest barrier to entry).

Hamilton and Tissot are entry level swiss luxury watches. They're perfectly good watches but have no horological significance and cost enough to be considered "expensive" by non-watch-enthusiasts but quite cheap compared to higher-end Swiss watches.

Rolex is high-end and produces watches of superb quality, but they also have the dubious honor of being the most recognized of the top brands. That means they also appeal to people who aren't really interested in watches but want to show off their disposable income.

Seiko is cheaper because half of what you're paying with Swiss watches is branding, marketing, and the words SWISS MADE at the bottom of the dial. I don't like that watch very much and the bracelet is awful in my opinion, if I wanted a midrange Swatch I'd go for a Hamilton Jazzmaster.

With Tissot you pay a bit more for the name and a bit more for the Swiss made stamp. Tissot quality tends to be pretty much the same across their entire product line (Tissot occupies a specific slot on Swatch Group's brand hierarchy). Seiko has a much bigger range, from well below to well above Tissot depending on the model and movement.

If the Seiko is significantly cheaper, chances are it has a Malaysian-made movement and lower finish quality than Tissot. At the same price point they should be relatively comparable except that the Seiko movement is made in Japan.

300Hz, is that a tuning fork movement?

Yeah it's a tuning fork. The sweeping second hand is beautiful in motion. My only problem is if it ever dies or the coils inside burn out. Omega charges a minimum of $900 to replace one. Although I could try to find someone who specializes in tuning forks. It's basically an Accutron movement with Omega improvements.

It wouldn't be perfectly suited for business casual but you could definitely get away with it, especially considering the atrocious watches most people wear. I don't know how big it is, but I'm guessing 40ish mm which is on the bigger side and that plus the arabic numerals make it pretty casual.

In the same sort of pricerange and also from Seiko there's the SARB033 and 035 which are in my opinion the perfect business casual sort of watch, they're a bit dressy but still pretty sporty and definitely not a true dress watch. Then there's also the SARX015/013/017 which falls between the SARG and the SARB in dressiness.

Sold my swiss watches; rolexes and a speedmaster.
I hate wearing them. I either feel anxious about damaging them or having them stolen, or i feel like a pretentious try-hard for even wearing them in the first place. And to be honest, unless you're obviously flush as fuck, you do look like pretentious dick when you wear a rolex.
I have enough expendable income that service and potential repair costs are a non-issue, but i'm still conscious of money. Now that the novelty is gone i can see that owning them outwith investment -and there are better places to invest money than in watches anyway- it's utterly pointless, especially when you consider that Japanese watches are just as good, more reliable, and personally i find them generally more aesthetically pleasing, all at a fraction of the cost. I can wear them and genuinely enjoy them.
I think it's quite telling that even when i had the Swiss pieces, the watch that had the most wrist time was a £200 orient.

Get insurance on it. You apparently have enough money to worry about it, jewelry insurance is fucking surprisingly cheap. BTW, nobody in the real world besides watch enthusiasts know what the fuck a speedmaster is.

>jewelry insurance is fucking surprisingly cheap
For theft, yes.
When you get into wear and tear, on 5 £1000+ watches, and you actually start claiming, the premiums quickly become exorbitant.
It's beside the point anyway. It doesn't relieve the anxiety.
Just because your cars insured, doesn't mean you'd leave it with keys in the ignition.

What's a good beginner luxury watch I could buy for my 17 year old cousin? I don't mind spending a bit since I love the guy but I sure as hell don't love him enough to pass a couple thousand dollars.

He owns and respects a few basic watches and isn't retarded so I'm not too worried about "downsizing" due to worry of him fucking it up.

Just any suggestions would be great.

Perhaps with Rolex, but the vast majority of people wouldn't recognize any other high-end Swiss watch brand. Only other watch enthusiasts would have any idea what it is or what you paid for it.

Besides, for many watch enthusiasts, myself included, most of the appeal of high-end watches comes from the beauty, craftsmanship, and history of precision machinery. Sure, it's nice when someone recognizes a fine watch, but it's rare and it's not why I own them.

These would be useless unless you read Cyrillic. I figure you don't.

Google for freescienceengineering (the Library Genesis project) and see what they have on watchmaking in English.

I'd recommend Daniels, but that's really on the making part of watchmaking. There should be well known and trusted guides on service and repair in English, but I'm not aware of them (yet).

Besides, try and get your hands dirty. It really helps a lot, check out the escapement work description vs a good video.
