There are trends, but honestly I see more people dressing "uniquely" than not.

short chinos are great, try experimenting with other kinds of tailored shorts with different textures

A lot of people buy them and just throw a t shirt on and some sneakers, they are very versatile though so try dressing them up a bit if you want to look a cut above. Put a button down on with them or a blazer, make sure you get a nice belt to go with them (I would suggest a ribbon belt) and experiment with different colours
