Hey /fa/,
I'm from a shit tier yuropean country and I'm going to NYC for the first time in autumn. What should I see, fashion wise? Any boutiques recs (something OAK-ish but less known maybe?), concept stores, exhibitions etc?
I'm your typical grill into the standard rick owens raf simons etc, but also I'd love to see some Vêtements, Gosha Rubchinskiy or Jacquemus (all things I won't ever find in stores in my country).

PS. HOW TO GET SPOTTED BY HUMANS OF NEW YORK
PPS. WHERE TO GET MODELSCOUTED

DSM NY should be at the top of your list, it's truly an amazing store.

the other big department stores (saks, barneys, etc) are also worth a walk through. as an american, no other city i've been to in the country has department stores like that. i felt the vertical layout and the walk through each floor was very unique to new york.

i would also highly recommend visiting supreme, ONLY NY, and the retrosuperfuture store. the retrosuperfuture store is the coolest shit ever, they have all of their sunglasses. there is also a jil sander store across the street. if you're into supreme, unique hype collection is worth a visit too. they're in the basement of a mini-mall in chinatown. it's definitely an experience and you can see some rare shit.

i was only there for a few days so i missed out on a lot. i also hit black scale and kith. you might like kith, black scale has fallen off though. there's also a rick owens store on the upper west side IIRC.

also: the SUFU guide will probably be more helpful than me. new york is awesome. get a subway pass obv

not sure. as far as manhattan, i would try to catch an airbnb around soho or east village. this is just what struck me as 'cool' while i was walking around, so actual NYC natives might have better suggestions.

last time i stayed there i was at the holiday inn at times square. avoid that like the plague. most of the 'times square' hotels are around the corner past the bus terminal, which is a nasty place and full of homeless people, police, and occasional police dogs which sketched me out heavy. plus, times square fucking sucks. it's super crowded and there are no worthwhile shops there.. just big chains you can find anywhere, but more crowded.

fun fact, i bought my CP achilles from DSM and i felt straight up like julia roberts when i was trying them on and told the salesperson i would take them

OP here. in Paris try walking the St Honoré street and the Louvre/place Vendôme area (the 1st arrondissement in general) for the very high fashion (you'll find Rick, CDG etc there).

as for boutiques of less known (or cheaper but still great, like Thom Krom tier) designers, try walking mostly rue du Temple (and the area, le Marais). I really rec the Springsioux store there!

besides, Paris is great for reworking or reselling vintage high fash. I can recommend Bless (also in le Marais) and Chercheminippes, but that's on the left riverside, near tour d'eiffel

I lived in NYC for 5 years, may be moving back soon.

If you're visiting New York, you should do something better with your time than go to stores. If you happen to be in SoHo and spot a boutique by all means enjoy perusing but to actually go out of your way to visit a store is extremely poseur tier behavior.

Fair enough.

Most of what I do in NY has to do with meeting people so I don't think that would exactly be what you're looking for unless you're willing to meet new people.

PS: There's always a rave in Brooklyn. You just need to get invited.

New Yorker here nobody gives a fuck about how you dress and HONY is overrated shit fad that no one even follows on IG anymore.

Explore the city for yourself there's stores everywhere. Particularly downtown. Lower West Side for Margiela and the like. SoHo is overrated but there are hidden gems, just avoid walking on Broadway. 5Ave for expensive shit. Williamsburg/Bushwick(not too deep) for thrifting. Go up around Columbia. Explore the high line and visit all the galleries. Don't go to the Bronx at all, it's basically a third world borough. Visit Hunters Point in Queens it's brand new and shiny. Don't forget to visit our museums and pay full price cause I won't. Flushing is shit. Harlem is shit. Avoid A/C trains. Have fun and visit many bars, but not the shitty ones. Best thing about NY is the people.

>You know we live in an era when we have internet access and free through the mail returns, right? You can shop from your couch at home.
yeah but almost nowhere on the planet can you find and try on all of those clothes. it's a lot nicer dropping $800 on a pair of shoes when you know they fit the first time. and still, it's just shit you want to experience outside the internet. We get it, you don't have an interest in fashion, but shockingly some people here do

For museums I'd say start at the MET. It's basically free and immense. I go there at least once a week to read, great environment. Take the 6 to 77th and walk there, you can run into many galleries on the way. Guggenheim is nearby, but that place is only worth the visit when there's an event going on. Avoid the Natural Museum of History, it's for children. I haven't been to Art and Design, but I heard the exhibitions are fantastic. MoMa midtown is on the expensive side, but definitely worth the visit. Take the 1/2 to 34 Penn station and walk to the Chelsea High Line which is on the west side around 10th Ave. The galleries are within large apartment building complexes and they're connected so you can visit them one after the other. These galleries are sort of unknown to tourists I suppose. You can usually pick up a booklet that highlights upcoming events and even more obscure gallery locations. Whitney Museum once you're done walking across the High Line. Lastly, go down Bowery and visit the New Museum. There's galleries around there too and I suggest walking across to the west from there. Hopefully while visiting one of these places you meet someone going to a private event. Don't be scared people are incredibly nice.

As for bars, it depends on your age. I'm 22 so my opinions are biased. Generally though, bars around central park are for rich people, bars around times square are for tourists, LES/Brooklyn is for young people. Bedford Ave in Brooklyn in a good place to start. Search up events at the Highline Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg. Battery Harris is a bar I always love visiting, they have a nice lounging area/dance floor, demographic is late 20s. If you want something more crazy there's a club called Output that's relatively cheap with a good environment. As for the city, le poisson rouge is always fun. Tropical on the LES is a blast as well. Use these as starting points and just head to whatever seems more exciting. St Marks is ok too

No, it won't. it'll take you to SoHo, Tribeca and Williamsburg which may as well all be the same place.

It's clear you've never been to NYC to shop or, if you have been, you didn't see the real NYC but somehow thought you had.

I do actually. It's the sole reason I have come here at all. But too many of you seem to have this overarching sense of self worth that derives from your fashion taste.

That's sad to hear! It's better to travel here when you're 21+ to avoid getting turned away from bars. Places are just strict with the ID thing especially in the city.

However, I've gotten into various places with 18-20 year olds just by showing my ID and they just let the chick pass without bothering, so if you're traveling with a sharp 21+ male, that can help you get in. Traveling in a group of older or attractive people can help as well. If you have 4+ girls in your circle, bouncers usually don't bother checking every one and just let them in to improve the ambiance. Going early like 7-9pm is helpful since the bouncers don't get there until 930pm usually, just act chill about it. If all else fails just go to a show. They're almost always 18+ and they sell alcohol there or you can just sneak alcohol.

Just keep buying your clothes. The small burst of endorphins you feel every time you aqcuire a new object should be just enough to satiate your depression for at least a few more decades. acne, paul smith, slp all on mercer st off broadway. If you want to go to a specific store stick to the streets adjacent to broadway, they're much easier to walk on.

I would walk around soho, up and down the different avenues just looking at what's interesting. I would also check out the big department stores.

This guy knows his shit. I second him on everything. Thursdays galleries usually offer free wine/beer and there's more of a crowd. This has it's ups and downs. I'm 21 but a lot of people in the range 16-25 come just to drink and maybe some of them have an interest in art. They never id, just have people serve it or leave it out for you to serve yourself. If you want to avoid a crowd, go another day. If you want to meet some people around your age, thursday evening is the time to go. iirc people start moving up and down the galleries from 23rd st & 9th-10th ave to 25-26th st around 7 on thursdays. There are also more galleries on the lower east side/border of soho. There are less of them though but might be a cooler crowd. I know less about these, I've only been a few times.

If you want to thrift I would check out the places along 1st ave. Tokyo7, Buffalo Exchange, various other thrift/consignment shops can be found along 1st avenue between 7th and 13th sts. 11th between 1st and 2nd ave has several.

They ask for id at bars for the most part. Restaurants often do not in my experience. You said you're 19. Most people at 19 just buy some alcohol and chill at peoples houses. A lot of delis in the east village don't id. Some liquor stores as well.

>> No.10303975

>>10302881
Shows can be pretty strict as well. If you go to a bedstuy show they probably want you to underage drink anyway. Places like Shea Stadium (not the baseball stadium, it's a venue) are easy to get drinks at. But they're also kind of shitty. As a new yorker, I would recommend you try and make some friends and try out stoop drinking. Just pour some liquor in another drink, wine in a opaque water bottle, or however else you want to obscure it, and chill on a stoop in the evening getting drunk. This requires you meeting people to chill with first though.

I would also check out hookah bars. Honestly, I doubt they give a fuck about iding but I usually just sneak in some alcohol there. Try to find a place that is mostly cushions and shit, not chairs and tables. My favorite place shut down recently but my friend said a place by 1st st and 1st ave is similar.

Also check out our pizza. For nicer slices I like artichoke pizza on 14th and 1st, and difara in brooklyn. Don't go to any big chain pizza in new york like pizza hut, dominos, sbarro, or papa john's. That should be a crime. Halal food is great too. I like the guys on 28th and madison, the classic halal guys at columbus circle, and a cart I just found on mulberry and houston.

If you want to see the sites, the empire state building is also open at night with a far shorter line. The ferry is a free way to get a view of manhattan from the water but make sure to run to the manhattan bound one as soon as you get to staten island because you don't want to get stuck in that shithole.
