Living in the city, buying a road bike was an awesome decision. Not just for convenience, but to be more active. Highly recommend.

It's true pretty much all locks can be broken. But there are things you can do which means the chances of your bike getting stolen is very little.

Get a good U lock and cable combo. Where I live most people don't lock their bikes using both as pictured. It means while it is still possible to break and steal, it is much more time consuming vs. stealing someone else's bike. You only have to run faster than your friend from a tiger in chase kind of thing.

The second is opt to lock your bike in busy areas. This is self explanatory.

Lastly, try and bring your bike in to your home at night. It is reported that most bikes get stolen while they are locked up outside someone's home or place of work.

I did lots of research after my bike got stolen while locked outside my flat with just a shitty cable lock.

Dope fiend here

I hope you don't just leave your bike like that (well actually, I do), it would take me 30 seconds to a minute to have your front tire, seat, drink bottle, and possibly handlebar, that's at least 20 bucks for your wheel

but fuck that. what a lot of cyclists don't understand is that they think because they have a lock they're all good, nobody can steal it. you see a lot where they put the lock through the front wheel, their helmet etc thinking it's all good, but what they don't understand is your lock is only as strong as the thing it's hooked around

I've stolen dozens of bikes like this. guy thinks he's done everything right, but all I need to do is walk along with a sledgehammer and bash the little pole it's around right near the weld that thing will come off easy, then just lift the lock up with the bike and boom ride off, wearing the helmet you brought with you.

locks around chains for example, are only as good as what's the chain connected to. Bolted onto a log in the ground? again, sledgehamer that shit it's easy, get 3-4 bikes at once if you got a van waiting

sometimes you can just get a travel suictcase with wheels, walk through a bike rack and just take all the shit that's not locked. cut through the helmet strap half the time it's just clipped around the bike just take it, chuck it in your bag, take everything out of sidesadles I've taken laptops, phones, clothes, wallets, you name it people just leave that shit around aint nothing but a zip stopping people, fuck it take the whole fucking travel bag thing, take repair kits, seats, front wheels, disck brakes. a lot of poeopl think oh a theif wouldn't just take that (eg one wheel, or one brake or etc), but fuck yeah they do. it's better that way you can get two front wheels a frame one set of brakes a seat and a helmet all from different bikes chop it into one and sell/pawn it easy

What do you figure is the worst kinda lock from your perspective?
I've busted enough of the shitty chain locks like in the post you replied to know not to get those, and like you said, chains are kinda fucking shite as well so I just got basic U-lock.
I mean in the end the locks are just there to slow whoever wants my bike down but the ideal situation would be bike locked in a way that thiefs just think "Fuck that, not gonna bother"
Probably no one would even want to steal my bike honestly, might have some retro value for some hipster who's in to stealing.
