Frat bro here.

If done correctly, it's pretty darn good, but if you try too hard, you get ridiculed, even if you're part of the greek life.

Stick to stuff like Brooks Brothers, and avoid stuff from places like Vineyard Vines.

For some reason in america people seem to think that this looks good. I have no idea why, because these kids just look like a bunch of 40 year old dads. It's sad how they all try to dress the same to fit in. Last time I checked, people wear what they want because they like to express themselves, not show the world they're a bunch of conformist douchebag white bois.

>> No.10181344

People tend to look down on frat guys in the current political climate because of misinformation and the whole of liberal media pushing the 'white privilege' angle. Other than that there's nothing wrong with it. Those guys look like they're going to take their composite photos. I doubt they'd wear that outside. Some bright, proper length shorts, basic shirt, and some loafers or boat shoes. It's very casual that's all, and usually only during summer. Otherwise it's just going to be a basic prep look. Like I said though, people now in general look down on these kids as being privileged as if that's some kind of negative instead of a positive. I might sound /pol/ as hell but it's true and it's the liberal medias fault.

frat guy here as well (although im in california so we dont have as much of the prep shit out here for the lesser/minority frats)

this guy is right for the most part

for socal, some of fratcore wear just doesnt fucking work during the fall and summer depending on heat
vineyard vines is preppy "i was a fucking cunt in highschool with a trustfund back east" fuckboy look that will only impress sigma chi or TKEs (you wont be impressing anyone older)

Brooks brothers is relatively dead in california but its great for 20-30 somethings and its good clothing, good suits as well. Nice looking, you can go "frat" with it or just look well kept
>brooks brothers will break your wallet if you are like me and arent some daddy's money fratboy
polo is fine, fuck even izod, hilfinger, etc is fine,
>fuck lacoste

>dont look like a flaming homosexual
>don't look like you are trying hard (from OP's pick, first guy on the left, and the last 2 on the right are fucking tryhard looking cunts)

as for california, we get that techno rocker leather jacket type of members mixed in as well, intermix styles, don't worry about blowing all your money on shit because that drunk freshman whore was going to blow you regardless

It's american people who aren't fashionably conscious. The Ivy League preppy attire dominates the fashionably-unconscioused group because that's what our culture tells people growing up is considered "nice" or "wealthy". Really not that hard to understand. Same reason people dress and value different styles of clothing in other countries, excluding weather /geographical conditions and restraints.

Not much but you get lumped in as a douche and depending on color pallet and fit gay. I usually wear frat bro/prep clothing most of my stuff is lacoste, joseph abboud and polo ralph lauren. I do look a bit gay, but thats what i want a slightly efeminet look.

In this board prep is looked down upon here and fashion circles because frankly thats what a good chunk of mens wear is plus its also really easy to look good in it if you arent a fucking idiot and buying baggy clothing.

But for common people who dont worry to much about looking like a runway model its a perfectly good look. I get compliments on my outfit from every day people i know

Frat-core down south in the SEC looks nothing like pic related.
You should see how Ole Miss dresses for their tailgates.

At my school(not Ole Miss):
For socials it's usually slacks/nice shoes/button down
Date nights it's slightly nicer, maybe a blazer
Semi-formal: blazer, tie, all that
Formal: tux

Big 10 fraternity checking in.

No one really dresses like that. 90% of the time its the same type of clothes as everyone else on campus, maybe with a long sleeve shirt or tshirt with your letters/chapter on it because you got it for free.

Day drinking attire is whatever you want to wear, maybe a vintage hawaiian you trenched up to wear only to get faced in. Maybe a sunhat or bucket if you are going to be out on the porch or roof all day.

Date nights, events with sororities at a bar, etc, might see a button down and good pants, possibly a blazer if it isn't too hot. Also goes for a few parties as well as pledging activities.

Formal for us is a trip to rented cabins down south so its whatever you want to wear for the day, mostly the drinking hawaiians or whatever, maybe a soccer jersey if your team is playing (champions league games were full swing last formal). Formal dinner would be nicer slacks and a blazer and tie or a full on suit. I don't think anyone bothers with a tuxedo.

Boat shoes are worn because they are comfortable and easy to clean spilled things off of, not to mention you don't have to bother with socks. Loafers are worn for nicer things. Still, plenty of people just wear vans if that's what they want to wear, no one cares.

No one really wears loud colors or hats, pastels are hardly overboard as well and usually kept to like one article of clothing.

You mostly see the goober fraternities dressing like that or, mainly lately, people who aren't in fraternities going to house parties. We tend to give our guys shit when they dress like that because it's tacky, but nothing serious.

I feel like everyones idea of >fratcore here or elsewhere is just a snapshot of what might have been worn 7-10 years ago really.

Keep it relatively simple. don't go for bright colors.
Darker greens, burnt yellows, sea blue, some lighter colored slacks. Some pastels but not too much that it dominates your wardrobe and you look like an easter egg.

Go for interesting textures. Corduroy with a thicker textured sweater, etc. Cardigans if you can pull it off. Short, tapered hair with a part, clean shave.

take a look at the guy in the front. slim fitting slacks and slim fitting sweatshirt, although a bit awkward collar. loafers are good and can be worn with or without socks. avoid bags if possible and just carry the notebook you need for class; no need to carry everything at once if you live close enough. crew necks with your school name on the front are quite nice and versatile, although keep it plain with just the name in white letters and keep the palate dull if your colors are bright red or something (go for a maroon).

>> No.10184657

>>10184625
Lastly, look at how this is almost there but fails. pants are either too baggy or too short in the case of the guy in the middle. the guy on the left lacks contrast in his outfit as well as his tie being somewhat too wide. second to right has too baggy and long pants and the shirt and pants match shouldn't really match like that. bow tie is questionable but mostly because it doesn't sit flat. middle guy needs a jacket or to go tieless. shorts are too high on the guy on the right and he needs a collar under that sweatshirt if he plans to wear those shoes (which he shouldn't).

the shoes overall look cheap. your basics in this department would be a medium brown loafer with soft and quality leather, not too matte or glossy, preferably something you can condition and have it look good. your other shoe would be a traditional brown dress shoe with quality leather and a crepe bottom, not rubber. boat shoes for when you are on a boat or otherwise your most informal fit, but stick to the more classic and original looking sperrys. expect to pay $200, $400, and $80 respectively for shoes that should last all your life with regular conditioning (the sperrys might only last a decade but then again my dad has had the same pair for 25 years).

the girls fits are trash but irrelevant for our purposes.

above all is how you carry yourself. wake up a couple hours before your first class. have good posture and stay on the slimmer end of ottermode (stay active). confidence in all things. you can get away with having fewer clothes if you can combine them readily, but ensure quality is good. wayfarer sunglasses are overplayed so go with some classic persols, tortoise frames. I'm in undergrad so I don't know how it goes for med school, but I get all my studying done for the week sunday - wednesday by being very productive. no need to stay up late studying or work for more than 4 hours a day if you are efficient and don't get distracted. this leaves you plenty of time to be drunk effectively from thursday after class until late saturday night with your fraternity brothers without any sort of gpa hit.

On drinking, be a good drunk. that doesn't mean only have a few beers, by all means drink heavily. I still am upright and not falling all over the place, not loud and obnoxious but polite and somewhat reserved even when I'm 15 beers deep on the porch and unable to read the screen on my phone. If you puke do so cleanly into the toilet and wipe your face and the mess you made and continue drinking. blackouts are never a disaster if you keep composed. and lastly, don't feel like you have to talk shit, its improper.

/fa/ might hate fraternities because of a chronic sour grapes syndrome or even from bad experiences with them, I've had plenty of those, but with a solid group of men joining one remains a good choice for anyone looking to get the most out of their undergrad, academically or socially.

This is accurate, but their Red Fleece line had some good ideas, and their new shirt cuts are finally getting slimmer instead of baggier.

There's definitely gonna be some growing pains, but I doubt they're going by the wayside any time soon. They're just beginning to recognize that there are people (i.e. me) who will throw down serious cash if they offer decent slim fit stuff.

Of course, it will be very interesting to see how they balance the "we're youthful and have slim fits!" attitude with the "old men shop here for blouse-shaped shirts" demographic.

I'd entirely agree with you that people on /fa/ shit on greek like because of weird sour grapes bullshit, but don't kid yourself for one second that being in a frat is "academically" beneficial. Ditto for professional development.

One big misconception among undergrads is that stuff like "professional fraternities" matters. It doesn't. My undergrad degrees are nowadays relegated to toss-away line items on a huge resume, and I don't ever talk about what I did in college anymore. That's kinda a good thing because I spent some of my free time doing programming work for porn sites.

Fun story: I remember being in a campus recruiting office back in the day and seeing a sorority social chair cry because she realized that position didn't make up for her mediocre GPA and lack of skills. It was weird.

Sour grapes? Edgy neckbeard? Either way you don't understand the first thing about frats. Most people grow out of your way of thinking after freshman year.
>m-muh networking
Yeah, a side benefit isn't an 'excuse' anyone uses in a frat, unless they're a shitty goober frat. Sure, it's nice, and it will help down the road, but again, you don't know the first thing about which you speak.

The problem is that it's a uniform; it's not innovative. It's classic, sure, and it's better than cargo shorts and a Minecraft T-shirt, but the thing is, they're not doing anything interesting. Those who seriously wear that stuff and deem themselves fashionable think they've hit the "fashionable" level in sartorial achievement, or something. It's conforming to very slight non-comformity.

At the same time, let the frat bros wear their fratbro shit so those who enjoy fashion like an art and a cultivation of individual image can stand out against the normies.

>> No.10194999

>>10186477
I can't speak for all fraternities but I would say mine is academically beneficial. We have mandatory study hours that people have to go to in the library if you want to go to social events. Older brothers are willing to take time out of their schedule whenever to help you out with a class if they've had experience. Greek GPA on campus is maybe a half point higher than non greek gpa, and only about a quarter of our brothers are some form of business majors (majority in some form of engineering: chem e, cse, mechanical, etc).

Professionally, it's what you make of it. Your positions in the chapter aren't going to make your resume, but they could help by showing you are willing to get seriously involved in your organizations. We have a lot of brothers that after completing their internship or maybe a part time job give us a heads up of the opening/listing. Usually you can get hired without going through the formal vetting process that everyone else goes through if a proficient former employee vouches for you. Our alumni do the same.

Not saying it will make your internship or post grad employment search any easier, but you get more accessible options.

what school specifically
most schools in the south / SEC are worth joining a fraternity, some pretty much require you to join if you want to have an all around college experience
living in the south as well (I go to Ole Miss) I would 100% advise you to join
since you are majoring in compsci your fraternity will prob not help you land a job easier but you never know whose dad will work where or what alumni might have random connections to some place
legacy isnt a big deal but can help you get into the more exclusive / sought after fraternities, especially in the south

the fraternities that describe themselves as southern or try to portray will not bid a minority. it has less to do with undergraduates being racist and more to do with the alumni base. some alumni would stop donating if their chapter bid a minority, and the alumni housing corporations own the mansion fraternity houses. the alumni would not hesitate to pull the house if they dont like something that is going on in the chapter.

not all fraternities in the south are like that.

given that you are going to UF, it may be very different because it is not as deeply rooted in southern traditions.

I don't know man, I went to a small liberal arts school and the only people I saw dressing like that are the guys that are trying to give a fuck. The local fraternities were basically split between normies that were a little too full of themselves, the football house, the lax bro house, the nerds, the smokers and the guys that did lots of pills and nose drugs. But they were all reasonably likeable guys that just found their crowd
The were 2 nationals, one was mega douches that wore full suits and the other group were 2cool4u mega douches that wore frat-core

We had at least 150 blacks at our school, we pride ourselves on our progressive values. Some of our blacks weren't even American, but real African! But just because you were black doesn't mean you had to be in the black frat house. Some of them lived among the non-blacks and were treated the same as everyone else except for when we wanted to touch their hair and stuff.

Anyway no one wore suits at our school, not even the ones in the black frat or the gay frat.

God I hate Vineyard Vines, I live on Long Island and people are obsessed with the shit.

Brooks Brothers is my core brand, The 346 brand(exclusive to outlets and specific stores) has a lot more casual wear than the actual Brooks catalog. They sell really high quality, nice fitting and relatively cheap fitting t's, I got them for about 15 dollars a piece. Color selection is amazing and no Web looking colors, very rich and attractive looking navy's and burgundy's and other natural and versatile colors. Obviously their polo and button up game is the best around and really only contested by like Ralph Lauren for the price.

The less stupid looking hipster stuff from their Red Fleece brand is also really really good, really comfortable and well fitting sweaters for the winter. Fuck, if you like sweaters then Brooks is the place to go. I bought some fleeces from them a while back and they're literally the nicest items I own, only problem is they pricey as fuck; expect to pay like 200 dollars for a quality sweater, and you can probably get it for half that price in shittier colors if you needed/wanted to.

Outerwear game is pretty weak though and a lot of their Summer Stuff was overpriced, generally I feel this way about most quality mass brand's summer shit, you could get summer essentials for cheaper at usually shittier retailers.

General Tip though if you aren't well fit, 6'1-6'3 and white, stay away from some of their more preppy and over the top shit. It won't look good on you, and you won't pull it off, stick to more grounded(and usually cheaper) shit in their catalog. I don't look like that so I make sure to adjust my expectations on how shit will look on me compared to models. Make sure you hit up a store and try stuff on before you get it online.

I think this is the most shilling I'll ever do for a company on /fa/, I love brooks lol.
